Do The Bills Have A Passing Game Problem?
LVGrown replied to BillsFan130's topic in The Stadium Wall
Agreed and many clearly don't watch any other football. The expectation is perfection ... score on every drive, stop the other team on every drive and its so frustrating that I avoid all social media during games because so many make it a miserable experience. Any time I feel myself getting frustrated with the Bills I turn on ANY other game and I am quickly reminded how spoiled I am to be a Bills fan during this era. -

i mean the biggest liar on the planet ordering his minions to go after critics. and the sheeple calmly accept it.... -
Very good points with the guys we are getting back. I would say that where I zig when you zag is at the safety position. I think they are dedicated to see what Bishop can provide over the course of the season. And (even though I think he should be in the bench) they will not bench Rapp as they see him as a leader. In fairness, last night we played a team that pressures safeties a bit and for the most part Bishop held up. No deep balls hit and despite being out of position a couple times he looked much better than last year. I think they are willing to give up a little today to have him ready for the playoffs.

On the point of # 2 yes the Dolphins did adjust. They basically on early downs went into a 5 man front with 2 LBs in the box and a safety crept down on early downs. They bottled up Cook inside that’s why you saw the Bills running more toss late in the game. With Cook bottled up and 2nd and 3rd and long they sat in a 2 shell cover 2 look and made Allen take dump downs and they did a good job for the most part getting to the ball carrier quickly to minimize YAC. In addition I don’t think Dawkins and Brown were particularly great at times in pass pro last night

They scored 31. Had a missed FG. Miami was trying to play keep away on offense. This Sunday count how many teams score over 30. It’s not as common as you think. B offensive performance and they get 30. Thats pretty crazy to think about. They still won by 10.

I know it's a little weird that we are being so effusive about a 5th round blocking TE but it's not just about how well Hawes is adapting (he's doing great) it's that he's effectively letting us run our Jumbo/6OL sets while not needing to declare eligibility and actually be a passing threat

Do The Bills Have A Passing Game Problem?

It's double edged. I love watching Cook do his thing, but it gives Brady a false sense of security that he can keep running it in close games. That leaves Josh less margin for error, and eventually has to put on the cape. Successful for 5 or 6 drives, then 3 and out, 3 and out, 3 and out. Saved by a couple penalties. Opportunities wasted that could've resulted in numerous kill shots. Missed FG didn't help. If you're getting 6-8 yds. on a 1st down run, why not take your shot on 2nd and keep a defense honest? Kinda feel Brady is having a problem finding a happy balance. He's content running an offense that limits JA's potential for Ints while dinking and dunking and zone concept rushing. Jmoh.... -
It’s ironic how Walker was thought of to be more of a project, and yet he’s significantly outplayed TJ Sanders and Landon Jackson.

I think Allen is being coached to be extremely conservative. A few examples: - Multiple times on 3rd and long checking down and getting tackled short of the sticks. - Eating the sack before the missed FG. Typical Allen would have escaped or tried to pass in the collapsing pocket, but that is riskier. - Always taking the checkdown when WR are sent deep unless they are clearly open (no 50/50 balls, or throwing players open). The people just quoting scores and saying everything is fine, I challenge you with the following scenarios: - What happens in a game when the run game isn't working? It is absolutely going to happen. - What happens as the season progresses, and teams start to adjust and shut down our short passing game (think the Texans game last season)? For better or worse, the coaches have decided that negative plays are to be avoided at all costs on offense. It's worked out so far, but the team will have to show it can take risks consistently to win the SB. -
Oh that is no joke... he is far and away our best rookie producer to date... Like I wonder if Beane should trade all his day 1 and 2 picks and just go Rds 4-7 like load up 18 picks in those rounds LOL... he seems to have a bit of a knack there... lol... ( yes that was mostly kidding.... but... hey)

There will be ramp up time for sure. Probably more than I'd prefer. But we'll also have 13 regular season games remaining (and a bye) when he comes off of IR. We need an impact CB2, this year, for the playoffs.

I don't expect perfection. But when Miamis defence got carved by Daniel jones and Drake maye and they are on a short week coming to buffalo with their secondary decimated, ya I had extremely high expectations for the offence and I didn't have 3 punts in a row on the bingo card -

I still think they believe "we have Josh Allen and that's enough". -
Hawes has quickly become one of my favorite players in just a few short weeks.
-
I think that there is a provision in the collective bargaining in which players that outplay there rookie contract automatically get performance bonuses. I think Cook got one.
-
Yes, it was.

I dont disagree here... the offense is the offense because the OLine is dominant and James Cook is running well and Josh is Josh... the passing game looks like it is a safe dink and dunk with rare down field throws... now I havent seen the stat breakdown to know if this supposition is true... but from the eye test, I am not seeing it... further the drops by key players in key situations 3 games in is clearly concerning.... I actually kinda commend Bready for scheming some of these completions as well.... as it does not look like they are getting separation down field to me... especially against Miami's 5th and 6th CBs.... lastly I think they have made a pretty obvious decision to limit the designed JA17 runs.... this was a big piece to account for that opposing D can back off a bit... but then here I am critizing and offense that is averaging like 35 points a game... so who knows... but indeed it just doesnt feel right...

After the week one game, there were a few threads that people posted their random thoughts and I liked how collaborative it was. Sorry, this isn't the start of me posting the old Few thoughts thread, but figured maybe we could get something new going. So please, post your own thoughts and see what comes of it. And if anyone likes the idea, feel free to start one each week after the game. 1 - Was anyone surprised to see Strong not get some more reps at DB over White? While Tre had a couple of decent plays, he really struggled to keep up with Waddle. That crossing route in the 4th was painful to watch and you could see in Tre's body language that he was just toast. I love Tre, and I know we get Hairston back soon, but Tre should not be out there against any team with speed. 2 - What happened in the second half to the offensive line? In the first half, they were pushing the defensive line off the ball 2-3 yards on almost ever rushing play. In the second half, did they get tired or did the Dolphins make adjustments. Our rushing was less effective and Josh was getting pressured more. It felt like a dramatic switch. 3 - Anyone regretting paying Cook now? The visual and production difference between Cook, Davis, and Johnson is night and day this season. I'd argue Cook is legitimately a top 5 back in the league now. His vision, cuts, speed, and even power seems to have taken another step with his contract. 4 - Groot - I saw the other threads on Groot, and while the defensive line didn't get a sack against a terrible offensive line, I feel like Groot hasn't shown up all season after getting paid. I could at least see Bosa making an effort and getting close. Even the rookies on the inside showed some flashes. I'm wondering if Groot is getting in his head too much on all the contain possibilities that it's slowing down his rush. Josh was sacked more than Tua, let that sink in. 5 - Safety Play - This might have been the first game I didn't complain about Rapp or Bishop, but I don't know if it's because they did their job well or if the Dolphins never tested them. On the Dolphins side, I have to tip my hat. Their safeties were the last line of defense on a few plays that could have been taken to the house. 6 - The Prater Miss - Was Prater asked what happened with that miss? That was such a momentum swing. There were so many in this game, but that's where I feel like the Dolphins got the most life. To go from being up 10 to tied at half was interesting (and yes, the Dolphins still could have scored). 7 - Offensive game plan - For anyone at the game, I'm curious to know how often the Dolphins played with at least two high safeties. For a defense that is decimated at DB, I was really surprised at the lack of deep shots we took. Yes, I know we were running well in the first half, but once that slowed in the second, why did we not test their secondary more? 8 - Kincaid - Have to show some love here as he finally looked like a 1st round pick. If he had pulled in that second touchdown, that may have been the game of his career. 9 - Married life has calmed Josh in the best way possible. I don't know how to explain it really, but Josh always looks so calm and in control, but you can also tell he expects to score on every drive. There really isn't a single throw he can't make and I find myself just basking in the glow of his ability every game now. Which randomly makes me hate the Packers for somehow going straight from Favre to Rodgers to Love. How is that fair? 10 - This season reminds me of the Chiefs that past few years where they didn't win pretty, but they still won and learned a little from each loss. No one gave the Dolphins a chance in this game, but you never corner a caged animal. These are all professional athletes and sometimes desire is as important as skill. That was easily the best effort the Dolphins could give, and while we didn't play our best, we figured it out. There's a ton of takeaways and lessons the Bills can get here, all while still 0-3. We have Oliver and Milano coming back, Hairston in two weeks, and then the suspensions are over. Keep Bosa healthy, keep tweaking and from these lesser opponents, and get ready for when the games really matter. Go Bills!

I don't see it that way at all. I think the best shot for them to win the Super Bowl is 2025 where Josh plays within himself, limits the turnovers and plays smart. But if the past is any indication, we have seen this movie play out before. Buffalo opens the season with a few boring wins. Offense is . methodical. Come playoff time, Josh gets unleashed more.

Three games is a little early for the best blocker ever title. I like Hawes too but it way too early to say such things. Butch Rolle was another backup TE that could block and he was a special teams demon. Pete Metzellars was a fabulous blocker, he was a starting TE that blocked like we had a 3rd tackle out there. Levy said Metzellars had no peer as a blocking TE - pretty lofty praise and well earned. The Bills have had many outstanding blocking TEs and only a few good receiving TE's. Going back to the 1960's championship teams, Paul Costa was as excellent TE and that made two AFL All Star teams, he eventually was moved to OT and he excelled there. Keep up the good work Hawes, I do like the 3 TE sets and this could be a big advantage in bad weather.

Yes, and he’s quoted in Joe B article this morning on special teams kick coverage adjustments. Although I think Hawes penalty on coverage was really in Epenesa
