The old codgers at the Ralph suck...

And thats the boss's opinion on your clothing ... but the fact is that your not going to a job interview. Your going to a football game. And those people probably dress appropriatly to work and then the way they want to when they go to a game. Either way normal is different to everyone. Normal to me is sweatpants and a Bills jersey. Yet to one of my best friends, normal is pressed black pants with a button down shirt covered by a mahogany sweater over it. That to me is uncomfortable and I wouldnt do that. Normal is different to everyone.

Fair enough, dax. My apology if I went overboard.

But I remain mystifyed at why folks who dress in "colorful" fashion, take umbrage when noticed by others..."what U lookin' at, man", etc.

I was at the game Sunday, sitting on the Bills side at about the 50-yard line, about 28 rows up.  Right in the middle of the "old-time" season ticket holders, the so-called "diehards" who support the franchise.

As soon as the game starts, this guy who had to be at least 65 starts with a running diatribe that criticizes EVERY FREAKING PLAY that doesn't either result in a loss for Minnesota's offense or a huge gain for Buffalo's.

After a particularly good play on 3rd down, I turned around and said to the guy, "was THAT play good enough for you?"  He said, "well it's about time."  I responded, "you do know they're trying out there," and this idiot had the nerve to say "no they're not."

I'm sure that moron has been sitting in War Memorial, Rich, and now the Ralph for 30+ years, but he sucks.  I'll never understand that mentality, and I hope to hell I never get that way.  What a miserable existence.

Born miserable, live miserable and die miserable. Welcome to WNY.

Maybe that should be the new slogan for the Chamber of Commerce.

On behalf of the people that love it here, may I just say that you are one of the very, very few people who we are actually glad that left.

My grandfather, rest his soul, was HILARIOUS to watch Bills games with.  First play of the game, Cribbs/Greg Bell/Thurman/Antowain/Henry/Willis/pick any Bills RB would run into the line for no gain.  Grandpa: "Jesus Christ!  We can't run the ball worth a schit!"

He actually predicted last year when the Bills were up 24-3 in Miami that the Bills would lose the game.  "They want to pass too much" he said.  I told that crazy old bastard to pipe down, they're completing passes all over the field.  That was the last game I watched with him, and I'll be damned if that crazy old bastard wasn't right.

Dude that is freakn hilarious!! I had a grandmother, rest her soul, that was exactly the same way. She'd start bitchin after the first play!! But God, did she love the Bills!!

Sackmarino...I think I might have been sitting near you, because I heard the same thing, idiots calling for Holcomb ALL GAME. Even after the first TD pass.

wee-todd-did.

The backup QB is always the most popular guy on the team with the fans ... even back in the Kelly days there were people screaming to put Reich in

So do I. Really.

Chris V is out and who knows when TKO is coming back and we only have rookie OL reserves now!!! WE ARE DOOOOOMMMED!! :D

Really, I do and also ones that Boo. Personally, I understand it coveys you are disappointed in their/his performance but I can't imagine it EVER helping the team in that game. So, while I may be pissed and disappointed I don't booo the home team!

oh come on, just the fact that we the freedom of speech and the freedom of choice, doesn't mean that we need use the first to rip on the second. different subcultures within our society have different attire expectations than what majority culture may be accustomed to (ie. exotic dancers wearing skimpy clothing, or rappers wearing jerseys, ball caps, and baggy jeans). In a society, that promotes diversity, i think people are being hypocritical here, in making a statement against certain subcultures.

i just hate annoying ass fans that only see the negative

794620[/snapback]

Most fans aren't too keen on fans that support everything that new staffs do until it's as obvious as Custer's scalp hanging off of some indian's spear that things aren't working out too well when it should have been evident with the simple realization that the odds aren't too good.

Then again, some people need a little more light shed on things than others. Call it a naivete.

Some of them actually care about whether the team is good or not.

You see, freedom of speech gives me the right to think that kids with big hats over their ears worn at silly angles, look like the kids in special class when I was growing up. Second, this is not diversity and subcultures, hell, I think some of the inner city people doing this can pull it off... it is the white suburban gangstas that just look silly and wannabees... your time will come when the styles of the day just make you laugh and wondering why the kids think they look cool... and then you will think... "damn I must be old", but you will still think they look the special class kids

personally, i don't get some of the styles that are out there right and i consider myself rather trendy. However, i am open minded enough to understand that fans of the hip-hop culture from NYC will wear baggy pants whatever tee shirt or buttondown design shirt, and an off-color yankees hat with the new era sticker still on it. I am open-minded to see the goth kids dressing in all-black and i sure as hell wear something that says that i am Irish, every now and then. All of these are representative of different subcultures.

So what, if the "challenged" kids wore hats off kilt, and today a different group of people are doing it. It just says that fashion gets its roots from something in the past, quite often, and originality is more in the case of modification not new design.

I could be closed minded about older people's fashion sense. Yet, i am understanding enough to know that older people wear what they wear, because it is what they can afford, it is what they need to wear for their job, it is what they like to wear, it is comfortable to wear, and it is what is expected of them to wear.

Since I started this train wreck of a thread, I'll add that the thing that REALLY pissed me off about the guy in my section was his implication that the team was not "trying" to win. There's pessimism, and then there's downright stupidity. He fell into the latter category, although I'm sure he, his wife, and his grandkids would tell numerous "hilarious" stories about how much he LOVES the Bills.

I just don't get it.

Neither do I... For so many people, the idea has become gospel that the only way to prove their are intelligent is by being as negative as possible. Whether it is a psychological defense mechanism (if I am already negative, I will not be disappointed) or just a manifestation of their deeper sphincterhood, it is annoying as hell....

I am 53, does that qualify me as a codger? :D

I wear whatever I want unless the event requires certain attire; for example I do not wear sweats to a formal wedding.

That said, who cares what a person wears? When a guy is dating my daughter, I want to see what is INSIDE that person.

Clothes are a sign of rebellion and part of self discovery, as a younger person is learning who they are. As long as there is respect, I am not concerned with most clothes.

I DO think the crooked hat looks like Goober Pyle.

I do not like girls wearing slogans on their ass, even if it not provocative, you are inviting people to read your butt!

I have told "dates", when arriving at my house to pull up their pants, and remove their cap when being introduced to my wife.

If they hate me, I do not care. If they are lucky enough to stay around, they will change their mind. :D

Hurt my girls and I WILL make you cry.

Turning on the Wayback Machine, the first time I met my mother in law, I had hair to my ass (in a neat pony tail), jeans with a couple holes (I was poor), and my pickup truck had a local band's "Rock with the rooster" bumper sticker. :D

Twenty-five years later, she thinks a lot more of me. :D

Some of your statements, especially how you handle the "dates" and the "hurt my kids" comment make me proud to be a "codger". The Wayback Machine can also give you a real perspective on many of the "practices we preach" to our kids.

Thanks for an excellent message.

I have one comment on this and one funny story.

The comment is ... why would you want to hurt someone if they made your girls cry? OK dont flame me yet - just listen. If its physical, thats one thing. But I have made girls cry before and their parents have gotten mad, and I didnt even know that I hurt them. It seems girls get mad over everything. Also. If a guy doesnt think its gonna work out and needs to end things and breaks up with her (for the best of both of them actually) and she cry's thats gonna make you hurt him? Kinda broad statement if you ask me.

The 2nd part is. Kinda funny story. It seems like Dads and older guys in general (not you, dont take this the wrong way) think they are the strongest people on earth. Someone I use to know (not really a friend) hurt his ex-girlfriends feelings by going on a rant about how she is a whore or whatever. Her dad met him at the doorstep when he came to appologize and proceded to push him a few times. Now if you know this guy, he was around 19-20 at the time (older than I was at the time), had a temper, and worked out (he was sculpted, but not jacked) ... this dad proceeded to swing at him, when the guy ducked his punch came right under him and gave him a bad upper-cut right before swinging over with his right hand and smashing the dads jaw in. This being said, I have also heard stories of Dads winning the fight. i just think its interesting that most Dads (including my own) think they are the strongest people in the world when it comes to their daughters.

I rarely flame anyone, especially when they pose intelligent questions and comments! :D

I do not get in the middle of the "drama queen" BS that is part of learning how to relate to others. There are guys that made my girls cry and I was happy they were cutting ties. You are right in that it was too broad of a statement. (pun intended? )

But there have been times when it was more than hurt feelings.

I am not a large guy. I am not a fighter, unless cornered.

I am sure half the guys and maybe half the ladies on this forum could kick my butt in a fight. So I am not one of those codgers who wants to rumble with someone who may be thirty years younger than me!

One time someone put a real hurt on one of my daughters - nothing physical but unnecessary and emotionally cruel . This guy was a star football player in HS and college, a coach at the time too, and easily twice as strong as me. Hell his arms were larger than my thighs.

Without so much as touching him, my words and anger became like a physical force. I made him cry like a baby. He was beaten the moment he looked in my eyes.

There are many ways to hurt someone, but only if that is the last resort and well deserved.

I'll arm wrestle you though!
