And I've sat for three hours in traffic after some irresponsible moron in a Land Rover tried to cut across four lanes of rush hour traffic without checking over his shoulder to make his exit.  The problem isn't morons in cars, or morons on bikes.  The problem, simply, is !@#$ing morons in general.

Plus...bikers wearing helmets isn't going to solve your problem of sitting in traffic at accident scenes.  Helmets don't prevent accidents.  Once the helmet actually becomes of any use, the accident's pretty much already happened...

A Chief of ER at a local hospital here had some stats in the n'paper a few years ago. Helmets do help a good amount.

They prevent or minimize head injury in low-speed crashes, or things like losing control at a stoplight and hitting the curb with your bean.

At high speeds, or with a strike by a fast-moving vehicle, they more or less let your head look presentable in your casket.

I didn't say they didn't do any good, I countered Avenger's contention that they were cost-effective.

Sad situation for sure. Who cares about football, let's just hope that he recovers and can live a completely normal life. I too saw the pictures of the car and he had to hit pretty hard where he did to do that damage. My prayers are with that guy right now. When you encounter head injuries like that, things can turn in an instant. All it takes is 1 blood clot or too much swelling in certain areas and he could end up dead or a vegtable. My guess is that the surgery is to alleviate the pressure from the swelling of his brain. Like I said, hope the guy is OK.

Bike insurance is actually a lot cheaper than car insurance. The problem with riding is not the "irresponsible rider" but the morons driving driving cars around them who don't pay attention.

You sound like a bike rider. Although I have no statistical proof to back it up, I would guess that you are dead wrong, in a high percentage of cases.

I had a good friend who was killed on a motorcycle about three years ago. I know that he was aware, he was reckless while driving, and always swore he would be "more careful".

My brother was in a very serious motorcycle accident about 25 years ago, and admitts, it was his fault for being reckless, and taking too many chances.

The brother of another very good friend of mine was just in a terrible wreck back in February, and is still laid up. He said that he should have known it was coming, because he took too many risks on his bike.

I have no doubt that "morons driving cars" bare some of the blame, but not all, all of the time.

We have a large motorcycle rally every year hear in Austin (just happened two weeks ago) and our streets are invaded for a weekend, with thousands of motorcyclists from all over. Every year, one or two of them get killed, often with their "old lady" on the back. Normally overgrown men child, trying to prove how macho, and noisy they can be. It is not uncommon to see them rumbling far over the speed limit, and weaving in and out of traffic.

I hope he's OK and will pray for a complete recovery.

He'll have the best of care. Pittsburgh has some of the finest medical facilities in the country and his med staff are most likely all Steelers fans

But when a multi million dollar career is at stake, no helmet?

Are you saying that Ralph Wilson is going to be courting free agents and potential coaching personel by escorting them around Buffalo on his Hog instead of his Taurus?

No...its' JP Losman...he has got a motorcycle liscense a few months back. I think Ralph sent him to the Grayhound station, to pick up our newest free-agent pick-up, Drew Haddad! He will ride in the sidecar!

If you want to look at it that way then we would have to exclude most senior citizens from driving because of failing eyesight and reflexes. Then we can move on to all of the overweight people I see ordering food at fast food joints, because they will only drive up my healthcare costs. I could go on and on with examples...just where do you draw the line on what is acceptable?

The point of my argument was not to point out that bad things don't happen or that there aren't plenty of other activities that can increases in costs, etc.

My point is that you can't make the argument that you should be allowed to do whatever you want that results in serious injury/death because, hey, it's only you that suffers.

Unless you live in a vacuum, the things you do have consequences beyond yourself.

Where you draw the line - that's up for debate. But don't say you should be allowed to do X because it doesn't impact anybody else - that's B.S.

Quickest way to end a football career or any other kind of career for that matter. People making left turns do not see motorcycles like they do cars. I wonder whether BR was speeding, also?

In California, if traffic slows down to under 15 miles per hour during, say rush hour, motorcyle riders are allowed to weave between the backed up traffic. Does that keep them from doing so at 50 miles per hour? No.

Believe me, you wouldn't have morons in cars hitting motorcycles if you didn't have morons on motorcycles in the first place.

I've been driving down the freeway at 80 and have some fricken idiot on a bike fly by me. I've also had a rock hit my car that put a huge dent in the hood. Also had a rock crack my windshield on the freeway. Sorry, but you'd never get me on a bike on the freeway.

http://www.thepittsburghchannel.com/news/9356067/detail.html

According to a police source, Roethlisberger suffered a broken jaw, broke his left sinus cavity, suffered a 9-inch laceration to the back of his head, lost many teeth and has severe injuries to his knees from hitting the pavement.

A plastic surgeon has been called in, the source said.

This SUCKS for him and possibly for the Steelers.

I just bought a new Harley Fatboy and have been riding for over 20 years. I got my motorcycle liscense before my car one and have never been in a serious accident, suffered any injury or anything close on my bike. My theory is to always drive like someone is TRYING to hit me! That enables me to recognize potential hazards and dangerous situations and avoid them. There will always be things that are beyond your control or happen too quickly but it's a chance you take. I love riding and will the rest of my life. I understand Ben's love of riding but I also believe that everyone should wear a helmet and would personally never ride without one.

Just my .02
