I always wondered about waivers when it comes to veterans close to retirement. I assumed teams talk to the player first before putting in a claim, both out of respect for a player at the end of their career, and because there is no point in putting in a claim for a player that can just decide to retire if they don't want to come. 

 

I guess that's not how it works, the Bills clearly put in a claim without any buy in from Slay.

Not really, the guy is 35 and probably in his last year. Why would he want to move to a new city he's never been to before for two months before retiring?

Why wouldn't we put in a claim?

 

He's played the Bengals twice, he's played the Browns, he has insight into the Eagles.  All of whom are next up on our schedule.  He provides depth, can still play, and has a ring.

 

That's how waivers work.  If he doesn't like it, he doesn't have to play.

I wonder if they can just cancel the transaction since Slay won’t report.  That seems kinda screwed up if the Bills lose two players over this

Probably- but it would cost a roster slot filled by nobody.
