Bills added three new players to the D that made a difference. Those three were playing aggressively and opened the defensive playbook.
 

McDermott has taken over play calling several times over the years, and always seems to get more out of the resources at hand. But clearly, he had more resources at hand against the Panthers. 
 

Can he call offense too?  Cook was running for 11 yards every carry and Josh was off his game - Cook could have had 300 yards if they used him in the 4th. Way too many pass calls in the first half.

Well given the score it seemed to have produced some rewards for sure Carolina had been said to be a very good run team and had 2 runners that have been producing at a high level up until yesterday, I didn't get to watch the game because I'm not in that region but the score tells me something good happened and I hope it continues !!

 

And hopefully Babich can learn from McD with him being in the Mr. Miaggi role showing him what he see's & what & when it needs to be called . If they can have the D that they did back a couple of years ago when McD was calling the plays that could be a shot in the arm that they need lets hope so anyway .

Listening to his PC after the game, McD referred to Kromer as the one for "dialing up" those run plays. 2:00 time or perhaps just the blocking schemes?

Playcalling is often a group effort. Brady wants to a call a run play, asks Kromer his suggestion, and then they go out and do that, unless Brady disagrees with it.  Same thing with Passing plays. He'll work with Ronald Curry to get the right play in.

And Babich is literally his pet project. Bobby has been his development project for years, McD has moved him all around the positions on defense, and then finally promoted him to DC... and it's been rough sailing to say the least.

 

Babich failing hard is a bad look for Bobby, but also not great for McD.

His scheme is multiple. Like what don't you like about it? We use man, we use zone, zone match, and maybe even some man matching stuff.  He;s got a plethora of blitzes in there as well

After he messed up game management decisions multiple playoffs in a row he said he wanted to have a "real" DC and become more of a CEO head coach that just manages.

IMO he should always be calling the defensive plays, it's obviously his competitive advantage. Reid continues to call the offensive plays in KC.

practically, it gets overpowered and allows explosive run plays and allows high quality os w decent play to run lots of plays moving the sticks with a low degree of difficulty.

 

more specifically, it's a bit predictable because of how he had his guys lineup in so many high leverage down and distances, it overly relies on the front 4 getting pressure, and requires the nickel, two lb, and one or two s to make a great read and a really high effort play to stop run plays from being explosive, i.e. it's too high of a degree of difficulty for them vs the O.

 

all that said, when it comes to getting young players coached up and ready to fire off the ball, and in terms of feel for the game and making defensive play calls, mcd is objectively really good.  he should be calling this d, not clown shoebabi

 

there was a question before about coaching trees in another thread, i think what will limit mcd from having a coaching tree (aside from like never hiring good/high profile guys) is that he has lots and lots of tactical stuff he does, but his scheme/strategy is really not ground breaking.  contrast w like a shanahan tree, where they have a unique philosophy to operate out of (for better or for worse) mcd just likes his nickel base cover two look with some mix ups and disguises thrown in.  it works well when he runs/calls it but that's as transferable as a strategy, or at least that's how it seems to me.

Because he's proven incapable of being both DC and HC. When he's playing DC his HC duties decline. And we pay him to be a HC. If he would entertain the idea of stepping down to DC so the Bills could hire a real HC, then I might be for keeping him around.
