My son came home from HS football practice today & was all mad. He complained that several of the seniors on his team despite knowing the offense really well & knowing exactly what to do, just aren't good at football. I replied "sounds like you have a bunch of Damar Hamlins", he immediately agreed. I think there's an overcorrection by fans when it comes to the evaluation of Hamlin v. the brass' evaluation. Is Damar an above average, great starter? No. You want to have a better starter than Damar. Is he so bad that he holds no value on a 53 man roster? Also, no. Just bc you could do better than him as a Starter doesn't mean he shouldn't be on the roster period. He knows the system and has McDermott's trust in it enough that he was an unquestioned starter for us all last year. And he wasn't so terrible in the role that he was a consistent liability. Without getting to Lamar and causing that fumble to happen, we may not have won the Divisional game. And when they had the chance to walk away from him, they chose to bring him back. It's my hope that Taylor Rapp and Cole Bishop are the Starters this year. But that doesn't mean there's no place for Hamlin on the team. Hamlin's experience and ability makes him a very good backup for this team. Not every player on a 53 man roster is going to be a Superstar. Not every player is someone that you'd be excited about starting if someone went down. No team is 53 deep with above average starters. And with Hamlin, it feels like fans are like "well he's not a great starter so he's worthless". When it comes to how the team viewed him last season and how a vocal majority of the fans view him, I think the reality is somewhere in the middle. Edited July 10 by BillsFanForever19 2 1 1 Quote
Billsfed1 Posted July 11 Author Posted July 11 The one thing i’ll say for Hamlin if he does win…he’s one tough son of a B word mentally. Obviously with his story, clawing and scratching to make it last year, the big plays that he did have last year were huge, timely plays. The big interception against Jacksonville that brought everybody to their feet, raking the football away from Lamar in the divisional round etc, he seemed to be around the football in big moments. Def has a lot to work on his game, but if he makes it I can see why. 1 1 Quote
JakeFrommStateFarm Posted July 11 Posted July 11 Not only will Damar make the team but he'll be the day 1 starter. Not saying i agree with it Why do Bills fans persist in this nonsense? McDermott trusts him Quote
BuffaloBillyG Posted July 11 Posted July 11 All the people trying to to shoe this new guy into a starting spot are hysterical. But three significant things happened people refuse to understand. 1. Hamlin was a FA. They brought him back. 2. The Bills did not address S with a meaningful pick expected to make immediate impact 3. Despite there being a lot of really good options in FA, they brought in a guy that, if he makes the team will likely be for STs. Add that all up and that tells me they are happier with Hamlin than fans are. Honestly, while I do believe that position needed an upgrade...Rapp is just as big of a liability (if not more) than Hamlin IMO. 1 Quote
sherpa Posted July 11 Posted July 11 At the end of camp/pre season, I judge the talent of the team, to some extent, on who they cut vs. who they kept last year. Hamlin is the guy I've been waiting for to be released. Great guy. Great story, but always behind the play and not a difference maker in any way. I get that he fulfills a trusted role, but if we want this defense to stand out, I would be more confident in someone who shows more. 1 Quote

DJB Posted July 12 Posted July 12 I really hope Forrest plays well and we can cut Damar. Hes the weakest link on our D 1 Quote

I just hope the FO and coaching wises up and lets the best player regardless of comfortability win. Last year was a mess at safety and although Bishop flashed with potential as our best future option, safety is still the most glaring weakness on our D. Heck I’d be stoked if Hancock performed his way in camp to being a starting safety for us. Please best man wins the job period and if they all suck go get someone who can actually cover and not leave our corners on islands On 7/10/2025 at 4:35 PM, wppete said: Derrick Forrest is making this team. Remember him always looking around and trying to blame the safeties? After he left he won AP defensive player of the year. Maybe he was right to blame the safeties??? 1 Quote

It was the safeties. That final year he was here the Bills had cluster injuries at safety and ended up with guys who should not be on an NFL field playing back there and dropping coverages for fun. 1 Quote

Ethan in Cleveland Posted July 12 Posted July 12 Hamlin and Gilliam are two guys that should have been gone a long time ago. A virtual lock both will be on the team. Hopefully Lewis is the odd man out. Hes awful at times but makes a few plays every once in a while. He has PS written all over him. He won't make any other roster in the NFL but he would be a good call up for an injury on the defensive backfield. 1 Quote
