These utility bills are too dang high

Specifically looking at electric, the supply charge has doubled on top of an also increasing delivery charge from NYSEG. Ive effectively seen my bill raise 75% comparing May 2024 - May 2025, despite only a lightly significant increase in kWh. 
 

Anyone else feeling this? Might need to start reading up on solar panels

They put one of those new smart meters on my house when I wasn’t home. Dirty *****! Bill jumped about 25%.

 

I’ve been meaning to call(thanks for the reminder)to see if it can be switched back, but doubt they will.

 

I just asked my wife, she says it’s closer to 40% for each of the two months we’ve had it.

I think if you don't have it they charge you a monthly fee

Our bill has raised significantly since they put the smart meter in. At least 50%

Nyseg puts you ona variable rate and charge higher rates when demand is up

 

I'd recommend a fixed rate program to help you manage the supply cost

 

I am an energy broker in real life and can help guide you, though I typically only help with commercial accounts

I got the smart meter year ago. The rates went up but the Kwh is almost exactly the same. I'm on the budget plan. They increased the set amount to match what I paid last year.

I saw something about their day/night pricing but it suggested it only for those who use way more kWh than I do. 
 

Definitely would like to lean into consistency if that’s something they offer

Not in NY, so I have Duke electric, but my electric bill has basically doubled since 2019 despite using lower electricity due to my better windows and insulation. This is definitely a country wide issue.

On the supply rates, having a fixed rate absolutely will lead to consistency on the supply portion of your bill.

We rented the first year we were married and paid $600/month in rent. This is 40 years ago, and we felt the rent was very doable. We should have rented a place with better insulation. We were married in February, and our first electric bill was also about $600.
