The update roster needs an impact player

 

a surprise cut or trade

Right now based on these projections, we have to replace about 13% of our offensive snaps, 23% of our defensive snaps, and a full 1/3 of our ST Snaps, plus we have a new ST Coordinator. Douglas, Hollins, & Q. Morris have the highest snap counts among the departures.

We do play dime a fair amount, so need at least 6 pretty good DB's.  They are the smallest guys on the team and take a bit of a beating esp with our run defense of late.

After the draft is signed the Bills currently have 85 players.

 

Need to round out some things for camp.

 

I see another TE (maybe Morris if he is not signed by anyone else).

One more RB.  Go to camp with 6.

One more OL.

I would like to see a camp leg kicker (not sure if they think the same way).

One more LB.

 

That would make 90.

They also have a 4th QB believe his name is Buschle,  I know his wife seems to be the "class mom" for the team, always organizing things for the other wives.  I do think unless White clearly our performs Buschle, could see him getting cut.

It's interesting that the modern Bills backup QB seems like a barely viable option to actually play. Maybe it's because Allen is just so stupid good, but the Kelly to Reich drop-off didn't seem so severe.

Trubisky was taken 2nd overall.  I know people think he is a terrible QB, but he went to a pro bowl (2018) and has thrown for over 12000 yards in his career.  His passer rating is 86.  TD to Int 74-48.  I have seen many worse QB's play for the Bills.  If G-d forbid he has to play extended time, our great OL and running game should help keep him from his worst instincts and allow him to keep the Bills viable.

No salary cap, very little free agency, and no $50M price tag on QBs back then.

If Trubisky has to play extended time then we take the Bengal approach and end up with a top 10 pick to finally get Josh that top weapon we're all clamoring for.

Brady will have Mitch handing the ball off to Cook, Davis and Johnson and short passes to Shakir, Moore, Kincaid and Samuel and we'll still score at least 24 points a game.

Does anyone else find it weird (sad?) that most of our UFAs haven't found a new team?  Cooper, Douglas, Smoot and Austin Johnson plus Morris and Miller are all still looking for jobs.

No, not according to the Bills website or Spotrac.

 

The only TE's listed are Kincaid, Knox, Davidson and the newly drafted Hawes.  The Bills waived TE Rogers in 4/17 after a non-football injury.

The Oline is also much much improved

The final WR and DB numbers are likely reliant on how the returner competition shakes out. Curious if any of the rookie DBs have enough return ability to threaten Codrington's spot? Codrington WAS a pretty good punt returner last year. Maybe it's more Shenault who's on the bubble, which I think is right. Moore seems like a guy who could return punts.

You got to remember there was no free agency back then so was more worthwhile for a team to draft a decent backup and hang on to him as he couldn't go anywhere.  If the Bills drafted someone decent, lets say Sanders, he's hardly going to play and once his contract is up, he's going to bolt for the chance to play elsewhere.   Practice time, pre-season, training camp were all longer back then too so the backup  had time to actually play and develop.  Read someplace that the backup gets about 6 snaps per week with the 1st team so how's a low drafted rookie ever going to get any good on a team like Buffalo?  The 3rd string running the scout team has more opportunities.

 

Available QB's are ither going to go to a team where the starter is on shaky ground so they know a couple bad weeks and that guy will be benched and I'll get my shot.  Or you have a guy like Mitch who's been around the block a couple times and has come to realization, his destiny is to be a backup.  Darnold is maybe an exception, but lets see how this year plays out first too.

First, thanks to @GASabresIUFan for doing this. It's fabulous.  And thanks to the contributors here. I've just started looking through the thread, and there's really a lot of good discussion about particular positions and players. Great stuff!!!

 

Second, I didn't want to start a new thread to say this, and this seemed like a good place to say it:  I'm quietly excited about this team. All over the roster. Safety troubles me some, and the linebacking feels a bit thin, but both the defensive line and corner back depth looks to be exceptional. I think we'll see some high level play out of the defense this season.

 

Offense has talent and depth on the offensive line (someone suggests Lundt will get cut, but he apparently is a talented and exceptionally motivated guy). Running back room is unchanged, and if it produces as well as last season, that's great. Receiving corps got the job done last season, and it seems to be upgraded nicely, with Palmer replacing the shoeless wonder and now Moore added to the mix.  You know your team is good when an item worth discussing here is why an unknown quarterback will make the practice squad because his wife is a good social organizing force among the players' wives!  

 

As I said, I'm quietly excited.

Seriously, the biggest piece that concerns me on this team is still defense...We are one injury away from losing Milano or Bernard and then there is no NFL caliber backups other than Williams.   Last two years both these gentlemen missed significant number of games and it was evident in this teams inability to stop the run. 

 

On Offense, if you saw the highlights of the 1st half of last season, both Coleman and Kincaid made great plays before injuries stuck them and then they were never the same in the 2nd half including the playoffs.  I expect both to come and contribute and improve that offense even more.

It is one the small surprises this offseason that Beane hasn’t added at all to the LB.  I thought we’d add one with one of our 4 picks from 169 to 177.  He didn’t even add a low cost vet for camp.  
 

This tells me that he and McD like 2nd year players Andressen and Ulofoshio.
