The point is that Reggie is not only a core special teamer- he protects Josh, he’s 3rd TE, he is a key player helping do dirty work, enabling plays to succeed

How much protection is he giving Josh on his 3 snaps a week on offense?

Gilliam does more that special teams.  He is a swiss army knife.  He is making $2 million, and hes earning his $.  We have to pay someone to replace him.  And our special teams sucked last year.  Failure, after failure.  I do not want to see the Bills regress on special teams. Cam, Reggie, and Siran are our aces. Removing one of our aces is not wise IMO

How is he earning it outside of ST??  He played 9% of the snaps and had 1 touch all year.

Why would that production need to be replaced, let alone cost 2 million?

Here is what Reggie Gilliam is:

Good blocker

Good special teams player

Good athlete

Emergency TE

Cheap (1.6m in 2024)

No reason to question his spot on this team at all.

Lol

I'm not sure he is any of these

He's not a good blocker.  He's not terrible I,guess

Good special teams? Again how would we know and who cares?  Anybody care who plays Special Teams for the  Chiefs???

Who cares if he is a good athlete

We don't need an emergency  TE

He isn't cheap at all. Any UDFA for league minimum can take his spot and play a position the team might actually need.

Except he is none of these things

He isn't the third TE

What key dirty work is he doing? Edwards is the guy doing the dirty work and playing the heavy blocking TE on most snaps

Gilliam is a relic of an outdated winning philosophy just like our HC.

Fullback is one situation where the name followed the body type and role, regardless of where he lined up.

Jim Brown was called a "fullback"  He was a prototype of a modern day "running back", speed, power, able to stretch the field in passing situations, not especially interested in pass protection.  Cookie Gilchrist was a FULLBACK, Boobie Braxton was a FULLBACK.

Absolutely.   But what's interesting is that the position is named for the place where the guy lined up, not the body type or style of play.   As the game evolved, guys with the fullback body type stopped being "full" backs.  The "running back" lines up in the fullback's traditional position, and the fullback lines up in the traditional halfbacks position.   It's just odd that the nomenclature didn't change.
