I stand corrected. They were one of the first. The point still applies. Finland was not a part of the USSR and was an early member of the EU. Ukraine was part of the USSR and only joined the EU after Russia invaded. So... @ChiGoose bringing up Finland in comparison to Ukraine, it's not the same scenario. It’s always bothered me that Ukraine has been so intertwined in U.S. politics for at least the last 3 administrations. And the timing of both invasions. Trump was obviously more friendly with Putin as much as a narcissistic egomaniac can be(simultaneously scorning Europe for Russian energy dependency), which then defies the aggression with the Ukraine as doc points out. everone always lies about all this stuff in real time, but sometimes undeniable pattern unveil themselves in retrospect. Putin's Russia is an economic basket case. Realizing that there is no way Russia will be able to emulate the economic success story of Poland and the Baltics, Putin realizes his legacy will be in reconstituting some manner of the Russian Empire. This is what makes it difficult to find a resolution. Ordinary geopolitical type solutions don't work. Have some kind of semi-autonomous Donbas region and a kind of free state in Crimea? It would obviously make sense from a military standpoint, and it would offer the hope of economic stability or even growth in Russia. His nostalgia goes back way before his time to the Russian Empire.
