No slavery, no Missouri Compromise, no worry about states rights, no two Kansas governments, no John Brown ...it all comes back to slavery. Having said that, Lincoln was an avowed racist that did not fight the Civil War to abolish slavery, he fought it to preserve the union. His position evolved from colonization of enslaved people to Liberia to slowly let slavery die out over a 40 year period to Emancipation of Slaves as more manpower was needed to win the war.
