Matt Barkley best characteristic is he’s a really nice guy. His career qb rating is 66.6!!!

backup qb is the weakest position on this team and it’s not hard to do better.

TJ Yates has a new coaching gig so he is not an option anymore :w00t:

OK, who do you suggest?

And critically this season, how much money would they request?

If it's not hard to do better, not hard to come up with some names

Back-up QB might be the least important off-season decision.  If Josh gets hurt, we are screwed regardless of who the back-up QB is.  If Barkley’s OK with $1m per year and he helps Josh get better, then bring him back.

Might want to tell the saints that who have gone like 7-0 in games Drew Brees missed the past 2 years.

obviously, it’s a huge downgrade if your backup plays. But Barkley is one of the worst qbs in the nfl (super nice guy).  You can do so much better.

Winston

dalton

Fitz

brisett

Newton

Tribusky

Joe Flacco

because the Bills are legit SB contenders and have awesome receivers, they can get a guy for less with the chance to be on a SB contender and potentially get some starts on a SB caliber roster that could could led to a starting job the following season.

Not sure how much a players wife enters into Beane's thoughts of the team per say but believe he does notice her as someone close to the team that can help out in ways as far as making new players wives comfortable and is also a asset to the community surrounding the Bills contributions to it .

Barkley has been a great team guy but has come up short on ways when on the field no matter where he has been given the other QB's on the roster i would like to see them get some more reps they know what Matt is the others maybe not so much .

If the article is a good report of what Davis is i think McBeane will want to see more possibly because they always talk what's best for the team moving forward and if he or Fromm are the guy they will be much cheaper than Matt in a yr when money is a object due to the cap shrinking a bit .

I've been saying that if Barkley has been a help to Josh and worth keeping around in that role, they could easily kick him into a(n assistant QB) coaching position.  Daboll and Dorsey may not be with the Bills after the coming season.

Flacco is absolutely terrible now and just collecting game checks.

Terrible Flacco this year: 80.6 qb on the crappy Jets. Trust me, I’m not arguing he’s good. I just think Barkley (really nice guy) is really really bad and barely nfl caliber.

this is a first world problem and it’s nice to have. But I would be terrified if he had to play. Those other guys aren’t great but they are better than Barkley.

it’s weird that in every other position you try to get the best possible players. But at qb, you get the non threatening, nice, get along with the starter guy regardless of ability. It’s amazing how many terrible guys stay in the nfl. I mean good for them I guess.

Doesn't matter what his rating is, he was 0-4 and his only good performance (against the Cheaters) saw him throw the game away.  The point being, a backup won't be winning you many games if the team around him is terrible.  But in the Bills' case, without a running game, likely no backup QB would have been able to do what Josh was able to do, and that's why I think he's the true MVP.

So Flacco would have went 0-4 on the Bills? I guarantee he would have won some of his starts here. It’s worlds apart between us and the Jets. Same thing with Cam (who’s arm might just be shot). You are leaving a bottom 5 offensive situation for a top 5ish one.

Maybe not 0-4 but I doubt he wins more than 1.

Brees routinely got subbed out when he was healthy and was an extremely limited QB at the end.  Josh is our offense.  Not saying Barkley couldn’t be upgraded, but given the Bills current cap situation and the fact that we have no running game, whatever money we spend on upgrading Barkley could be put to a better use.

Barkley was 80.9 this year.

I mean Brees did account for 53 tds in 23 games the last 2 seasons but I see your point.

and I know it’s nitpicking but with a SB caliber team, i think it’s a sneaky big need. Barkley has won 2 games in his career and his arm simply isn’t nfl caliber.

we’ve been real lucky with Allen not getting anything major. But it would a shame to have a championship season ruined by not upgrading that position. JMO.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that we already have a decent backup on the team: Davis Webb. He has a year in our system too.

No, the back-up QB is not the most under-the-radar or enticing off-season story line.  I could not care less who our backup QB is.  If Josh goes down we are screwed, end of story.  Do not waste valuable salary cap money on an expensive backup QB, especially when the Cap is projected to go down.
