The coronavirus paradox - our lowest point and finest hour

ABC News, by Tom Bossert

Original Article

The paradox of the novel coronavirus response is that it only works if we take aggressive steps before they seem necessary and, if they work, will not have seemed necessary. Success will look like we overreacted.

This is a unique emergency, but the basics still apply. For public officials in a crisis, you tell people everything you know and everything you do not know. Acknowledge uncertainty. Don't over-promise or over-reassure. Share the burden of complex problems and give people something to do. Don't make fun of them for how they feel, whether fearful or skeptical, and tell people how you made your decisions.

Author: “The virus is the product of natural evolution, ending any speculation about deliberate genetic engineering.”

JUPITER, Fla. — Over the course of this Covid-19 ordeal, a number of outlandish conspiracy theories have emerged that the virus was produced in a Chinese, Canadian, or American lab. Conspiracy theorieshave become an increasingly common part of everyday life in recent years, but a new study on Covid-19’s origins is disproving this theory. A team of international researchers have concluded that the novel coronavirus has entirely natural origins through evolution.

Public genome sequence data on Covid-19, as well as similar viruses, was extensively analyzed for this study. The results show absolutely no indication that the virus was produced artificially or in a lab setting.

LONDON — Ten days ago, I was asked to see a patient. I’m a respiratory specialist in an intensive-care unit at a hospital in London, so it wasn’t surprising that the patient needed a ventilator. It seemed fairly typical. But the patient turned out to have the coronavirus — our hospital’s first case and one of nearly 2,000 people who have so far tested positive in Britain. I hadn’t worn a mask. Soon I developed a cough.

Though I experienced neither fever nor breathlessness, I was told to self-isolate for 14 days. That’s where I am now, in self-isolation. And I’m not the only one from my hospital. After just one patient with Covid-19, a quarter of our junior staff are off with coughs and sniffles we would normally work through. A single case of the coronavirus has wreaked havoc in our hospital.

Cuomo holding press conference right now. Mandating all non essential work places can not have more than 50% of workforce reporting for duty outside home.

He’s doing such a good job. In command of the facts, leading, calming people but keeping everyone focused on what’s important. Had nice words to say of Trump, too

Is there evidence to this point supporting a man made pandemic?  No.  Could evidence be uncovered or revealed pointing to manipulation or material that occurred possibly with a human host?  Can't be ruled out.  I would like to see some redundancy in testing before swearing that it is impossible.

I know this putting me dangerously close to wild conspiracy theory territory if not firmly in that camp, but I’m starting to wonder if this was done intentionally by China to attack the US and other Western countries by spreading fear and destabilizing the economy. Yesterday when @GG was asking about why new cases in China have all but disappeared when it is projected longer elsewhere I came up with a few possibilities:

1) it actually started in China longer ago than we’ve been led to believe, which is why it is on the downswing there.

2) China is lying about the number of new cases.

3) China already knew about a cure/vaccine and has started administering it to their population.

1 seems reasonably plausible, although if that were the case it seems it would have spread to the rest of the globe faster than it did. 2 I think is the Occam’s razor answer, but 3 is where things get interesting. Especially in the context of China’s recent behavior like trying to blame the US by saying it was a bio weapon the we released on them and now expelling American journalists who might get too close to the truth, is it too far fetched that they would do something like release a bio weapon on their own people first, sacrificing a few thousand to deflect suspicion knowing they could save the rest, and then just sit back and let the thing spread? Yesterday during the response team update in addition to calling China out for spreading rumors that we started it, Trump seemed to be putting veiled pressure on China with his comments saying they had great incentive to cooperate, which may suggest the administration has reason to believe there’s more than meets the eye there.
