Why the wait?

Seriously, with the health, or lack thereof, of our TE crew to date, it makes sense to have a viable option to possibly call back to the active roster down the road. (And yes, I got the  sarcasm)

Beside Croom someone else must be going to IR/PUP.  They have to be signing another CB

Neal is listed as a CB on the official depth chart:

Because if they put him there now they can't recall him for the entire season.

Again , another team can claim him, but he must be placed on the 53. If nobody claims him, Bills can either:

Put him in the PS as an extra player, but can't be called up during the year.  OR

Put him on the regular PS, where he becomes just another PS player subject to normal rules.

Of course they can put him on the 53, too..

Except, from the way I understand it, another team can claim him on their 53, then place him on their PS later to stash him.

Still, 4 even seems like a lot. I'm guessing a lot of 2 TE sets?

Daboll clearly plans to utilize the TE position.  I would not be surprised to see three TEs on the field in some formations.  I think early signs are positive that they may have some pretty decent TE options on the team.  For those lamenting the loss of Duke Williams for his size and ball compete in the end zone, say hello to Sweeney and Knox, who are bigger and at least as fast and can fill that role nicely.

That's where the explanations get a bit murky,  for me at least. I'd think he'd have to stay on the roster past week 1. Otherwise the process seems like a bit of a sham.

Looking at the 53 it’s interesting to note that they’ve got exactly two players at every roster spot with the exception of TE where they loaded up big time with all of the extra guys.

They only have 1 FB, 1 RG, 1 LCB, 1 RDE, and 1 FS:

As far as I know, if you claim a player he needs to be put on the active roster, and assuming he is not a vested veteran, he must clear waivers before he can be put on the practice squad.

Yes, that's the normal progression

To repeat, Croom is off the roster tomorrow, Coleman is coming back, then Captain after the Jets game.

In case someone asks, Munnerlyn is being cut only to not have to pay him a guaranteed salary. He will come back for week 2:
