State of the Union Address - Choosing Greatness

BYRON YORK: Trump goes big, uses delayed State of the Union to make case on border, much more.

SO ONE OF THE INTERESTING THINGS ABOUT TRUMP’S SPEECH LAST NIGHT is how it seemed calculated to demolish all the standard anti-Trump tropes from the media and from the left and to do so with compelling imagery. Consider:

Trump’s a Nazi: Praise for Holocaust survivors, and a touching rendition of “Happy Birthday.” (With Trump waving his fingers like a conductor).

Trump hates minorities: Brags about record low black, Hispanic, and Asian unemployment — while white-clad Democratic women, overwhelmingly white themselves, sat prune-faced.

Trump’s a Russian tool: Withdrawing from the INF Treaty.

Trump’s a warmonger: Without me, Trump says, we’d be at war on the Korean peninsula. Also, I’m looking at pulling out of Afghanistan.

Trump hates women: Except he got even the prune-faced white-clad Democratic women up dancing (and chanting “USA! USA!”) when he talked about record female employment in and out of Congress.

And his rebuke to socialism was designed to strip the glamour that the media have tried to imbue it with by tying it to the abject misery of Venezuela.

In debate, I think this is called cutting across your opponent’s flow. And I think it’s Trump’s opening shot at 2020, as well as an effort to undercut the “Resistance” in and out of Congress.

Plus, as Ann Althouse notes, despite the predictions of lefties like Robert Reich (see below) it was all wrapped in optimism and sunny American exceptionalism. Genuinely Reaganesque.

And, of course, the sour, shallow responses from the lefty apparat just underscore that:

No idea who they polled or how it was worded.  It must have been a fairly bland question to wind up with this type of result.

Whats interesting there is CBS got the highest ratings last night, so the poll results are even more damning to the narrative.

I think that picture perfectly illustrates what is wrong with this country right now, it could have been a republican snarkily clapping at Obama, but this bullcrap us vs. them mentality with our leaders AND ourselves needs to stop.  Trump could have announced the end of homelessness a cure for cancer and alzeheimers and it would have been all about his tie, same could have been said with previous administrations.  It's a shame

It's not gonna change anytime soon,  not as long as the MSM keeps stoking the fires of division. There is no objection anymore

The coming Democratic majority will change this. Republicans will have to change in order to not lose elections. The demographics of the country are changing fast, which has caused the Republicans to turn insular, but they can't keep that up forever.

Well, we can't quote every single GOP voter Trump has lost, so we can highlight the loudest ones.

COACH PELOSI

FTA:

Upon further review, my friend is right. For example, Pelosi signaled Dems to stop booing Trump when he spoke about a caravan heading towards our southern border. The booing duly stopped.

At another point, she signaled for Democrats to stand up. Most complied.

I don’t recall ever seeing a House Speaker “coaching up” her party’s members during the state of the union address. On the other hand, I don’t recall a House majority caucus being as immature as the current crop of Democrats.

Something else was going on, I suspect. Last night, President Trump kept putting Democrats in a box. They could stand and/or applaud his lines about unity, American greatness and traditional values, or they could sit on their hands. Many congressional Democrats reject the concept of American greatness and some of our traditional values (and they think, not without cause, that Trump’s calls for unity are hypocritical).

These Dems had to decide whether to demonstrate their rejection on national television. Pelosi recognized the dilemma and tried to guide her caucus. It was a sensible thing for her to do, but it looked strange. In the end, moreover, Pelosi could not fully save the Democrats from themselves.

Expect Trump to put his opponent in the 2020 election in the same box.

Trump’s team knew how to make the Dems look bad

their looking for permission to applaud sugar-coated happy platitudes was embarrassing for them

nancy not immediately standing in a tribute to the First Lady was pitiful
