Possible we use Allen like Ravens use Jackson?

Recommended Posts

So I asked this question in another thread but it is kind of buried and I was wondering what people thought so I decided to start a new thread for it.

There is a lot of talk in the media about Baltimore having designed plays to get Lamar Jackson on the field to utilize his unique capabilities, but no one that I heard has speculated that we might do the same with Allen.

I know there is a risk to messing up the rhythm of the offense when you do this, but does anyone think Daboll might design some plays for Allen in order to take advantage of his mobility and big arm, as well as get him valuable game time experience? I know he is not really a gadget type of player, but I think it could really create some mis-matches for the Defense given how different his skill set is from Peterman. I for one would love to see this happen.

I don't think allen will be put in the game unless there's an injury or the game is a blow out.

He's not crazy fast and needs work on his accuracy. I don't think it would benefit anyone to randomly throw him in for a play or two then take him out.

Lamar is a different story because of his running abilities. I think he'll be used similar to EJ when Roman would bring him in for designed QB runs, wildcat, or trick plays.  Maybe hard counts lol

It's a neat idea (and could ease him into playing), but I doubt it would happen.

Absolutely not!

Do you say that because you think he would be ineffective, or because you think he could get hurt?  I don't necessarily think they will do it, but I would sure love to see him on the field in some capacity.

Maybe he can become a receiver like Foles. ?

Biggest difference between Allen and his situation and Jackson and his situation is this.

In Baltimore they have an entrenched starter in Flacco. The only way Jackson sees play time is a slash role. If I'm not mistaken, Jackson is the #3 QB with RGIII being the backup. In Buffalo, Peterman is the starter. If you want Allen on the field, you start him over a Nate Peterman. Allen is also 1 injury away from starting. I think Jackson being more in the Joe Webb role from last year. If Jackson gets hurt a play and Flacco goes down, the still have RGIII.

If Allen goes down doing some trick play and Peterman goes down...leaves us with Logan Thomas at QB. Risk/reward isn't the same.

Good point actually.  Very true that they are in different situations right now. So would that same argument hold true for using Allen in "clean up duty" in a blow out win or loss?

I say that because I don't want to risk injury

I could see value bringing Allen in for a Hail Mary situation, since he has the arm strength.

He could be our Hail Mary specialist in the same way that EJ was used as the Hard Count specialist.  B-)

They were talking about this on WGR this morning...I could certainly see that.

Funny, I did not hear that. I just started thinking about it after hearing multiple conversations around how the Ravens may use Lamar.

I was talking specifically about the hail Mary part.  They didn't really talk about him coming in for a keeper situation etc.

I would figure those as different scenarios. In a blow out win, he's likely just handing the ball off, burning clock. In a blow out loss situation, let him get the reps, see if he can spark the offense. Either way, if you open him up to injury Peterman can still start the following week.

To those of you who have used the "confused" reaction to my post without comment, why is this confusing to you?  I would not be surprised if the coaches tried to find a way to get their future franchise QB on the field somehow, even if he is not starting. I don't think this will necessarily happen, especially after hearing "No Place To Hyde's" logical explanation on why it wouldn't make sense, but I don't think it is outside the realm of possibility either.
