Dome??

  1. 1. Should Pegs build a dome?

I cannot believe that there are fans here who didn't love watching that yesterday. It was amazing entertainment and a ton of fun to watch from start to end. The last thing I want is for all venues to be the same. If you don't like snow football, take a look inside yourself because it means a small part of your soul has withered and died.

Hard to imagine the Bills spending about a Billion dollars on a new stadium and risk the weather keeping 10-20k fans away from the games like was the case yesterday.

If you're going to spend money on a stadium, you spend money on a stadium that will be inclusive to as many people as possible regardless of what the weather is like. A dome makes the weather irrelevant to the elderly and the young, and you avoid situations like yesterday where there are thousands of empty seats because people don't want to go freeze their you know what off in the freezing cold for 4-6 hours depending on when you arrive to tailgate.

I’m all for a dome but just sitting out in the elements isn’t the only factor in not going to a televised game. So are the road conditions. No dome is going to make those better.

As well, people using the worst day in Rich/Ralph/New Era’s 44 year history for the reason we need a dome is a bit over the top.

It's not one game. I'm pretty sure the weather is usually bad throughout November and December. With a closed dome, no one would have to worry about the conditions, and you would have more demand for tickets by people who usually wouldn't go when the weather is poor, like the elderly and children.

It's called arguing to the extremes. Not to mention if the stadium was moved out of the southtowns (and maybe downtown) it would be even less of an issue.

Going from memory, a retractable dome roof in this climate (meaning it has to stand up to a lot of weight from snow and ice) adds close to a billion dollars to the cost of a stadium.

So a billion dollars plus maintenance for maybe 2 games a year. And we lose the Buffalo experience which lots of us like.

My way may sound backwards but I think it makes sense. I would build a metal geodesic dome framework over the stadium. It would always be there and have the lighting and what not on it.

But the covering would be fabric and able to be rolled in. A bunch of sections sort of like the sails on a ship. So, we would actually retract the fabric covering if high winds or a blizzard was coming. And in nice weather.

But for moderate rain and general crappy weather, we would have a cover available.

They could even decorate or sell adds on the fabric cover sections.

So in a way it would be like a giant tent. Good for a crummy rainy day or night, but not for a big giant storm.

Died?

First, yes,  fun to watch.. But no, that wasn’t football. That was a side show.

I agree with those who think we should have a fixed dome.

It's football alright - just not the same old same old. Variety is the spice of life, and more to the point, that was a hell of a show yesterday. Total entertainment from start to finish, and a nail biter to boot.

Question:  who here has seen a game in a dome recently?

Just curious if anyone has actually seen an NFL game in one of the modern indoor stadiums (and, no, Toronto does NOT count - ever)?  Just lots of "the atmosphere is stale" comments, but folks in Indy and Minny seem to like their new homes.

Like I said, was in Minny's stadium (though not for a football game) and it was beautiful, definitely made me change my opinion of what an indoor stadium could be.

Just curious if everyone is going off of actual game day experiences, or off of gut...

Indy & Detroit (Snowvember Game).  Domes do have their merits.  Like going to a hockey game, that's what it like.

I still say... For the Bills, keep what we have.

I agree with this, it was more of a travel safety thing than sitting in the cold all day.

To be fair, we listened to the radio all morning and there were plenty of “ifs and maybes” as far as the forecast, as in ‘we know the difference a mile or two can make with these types of

storms’.  The band set up above the stadium at about noon and didn’t move. Most folks had already arrived by then.

Mid first Q people began leaving, probably to get out of OP before it got really bad. My group took a “vote”, it was leave now or stay til the end, and we elected to stick it out. Glad we did for multiple reasons. So much fun.

The steady trickle out helped the traffic situation, no question. There was prob ~10k ppl left at the end. Once we got out of the lot on Abbot and to 20 it was fine, prob took 45 mins from stadium to Rt. 5. It was just wet and a little slick there. Again, a matter of a few miles is all the difference.

If the money is ever put forth to build a new stadium, it will be a dome. No way that kind of investment is made in this region just to have it be used 8 times a year. A dome can host many different events and that's what will get a new stadium built.

This is NO WAY to play a game! Your playoff life is on the line and you have to play in this ****?

All stadiums should be the same. DOMED WITH RETRACTABLE ROOFS!

Are they all going to be temperature controlled with bugging microphones like P*ts and rolling fields like Arizona and hot tubs like Jacksonville and hole in roof so Gog can take a crap like Dallass?

Remember domes can collapse under snow making the stadium unusable.

I agree, I don't think they engineer any domes for 7 ft of snow, which happened in Orchard Park just a few years ago.

The only way it works if it is like a dome in Atlanta which is kept open when it snows.

A friend of mine who is a retired architect showed drawings of a design he made for a stadium.  He has been paid as consultant on several stadiums but more a QA then as a designer.  It basically is a dome not entirely enclosed and the sides of stadium are slanted so snow piles up along side of stadium rather than layering on dome.  The curve helps protect the stands and less snow will fall on seats.  I think it looks like an orange being opened up.
