Sullivan: One GM gone, one to go.

this is true but he took over the Pats and the Jets at extreme low points, thinking the Jets record was 1-15 when he arrived , and had one in a Super bowl and the other in a championship game in very short order.

you wouldn't sign up for trips to championship games or super bowls. ? Diminishing his accomplishments doesn't ring true

True. But his term in Dallas did nothing. I just don't think he was anything special as a czar type guy. Great coach but not special in the front office

Who is reading Sully? Obviously a lot of people.

The reason he hasn't moved on? May have to do with the fact that with Buffett as owner this is a very desireable job situation. Sully was offered a spot at Newsday, a huge paper, and moved here instead. Probably likes it here.

But yeah, he says stuff that criticism-hating fans don't like to hear, and he does it consistently. Makes sense to me, personally, that a team that's consistently topped out at mediocre often has bad things said about it.

News day is a long island paper. I wouldn't say huge. it isn't the Post , Daily news or TImes. critiquing is fine, but bashing with little evidence and less effort is plan and simply cheap and lazy. That sums his career up .

Without reading more than the headline, the fact that he took Bylsma's and Murray's firings and turned the story into his same tired story about Whaley and Pegula tells you everything you need to know about petty little ax-grinding one-trick pony Jerry. Was there even any reason for Whaley to be in the news today?

exactly. another Cheap shot.

It may be you who doesn't get it. The Bills, you may have noticed, place great emphasis on the run. Their starter is 29, and has been prone to hamstring issues the past couple years. A good 2nd string back is needed. Backup RB isn't exactly a bench guy-- he sees action in every game, and fills in when the starter goes down.

Correct, before Mike, the back up was Karos Williams , he played pretty well don't you think, when he flamed out the want to waiver wire and pulled out Mike G , who played well , before the thad C.j and Fred , it is not difficult to find a running back to have a productive 10 carries a game .

When you consider they need help at CB, S, LB, WR, RT--- not to mention, QB -- I'd say they have issues.

they heed to upgrade a few positions , guess what ? so do does every other team, Qb is the issue and 20 other teams have the same one.

I think it is far worse to be a Gm with a good qb , like Luck or Brees and still not put a 10 win team on the field , then it is to be 8-8 with out a good qb.

As soon as the spelling nazi in you comes out you know you have lost

ha ha ha so true .

Then Whaley should not be tagged with those picks. Only incoming GMs set up the draft boards? That's not right. If Whaley set up the board and owns EJ for it then why wouldn't the ones who set up the board for him take the heat for the last three years?

the Whaley haters like to look at his draft record in a vacuum. Take a look at the other 31 gm's you will find Whaley is doing a solid job. Have you ever gone back and looked at Bill b's drafts yikes not good.

Interesting point. I think I wish this were our dilemma. Results would be the same but it would be a different kind of grief. At this point, I'll take a different kind of grief..

the Pegulas need to hire a president that knows what the crap they are doing and then they need to go back to florida and we shouldn't hear about them again until there is a parade downtown for one of their teams

but no one who "knows what the crap they are doing" is moving their family to f ing WNY to take this job for this know nothing owner. not happening. but , hey the tailgates are great, right?

If the Bills had offered Kyle Shanahan the job or Jim Bob Cooter the head coaching position they would have taken it. If we upgrade our GM/Football Department some of the best minds are from the Green Bay tree. Green Bay Wisconsin isn't anything better than Buffalo.

The issue is the Pegulas refuse to hire a great football mind and let them run the show.

$$$. Ego. Don't kid yourself.

right. a top quality GM or Coach taking a job in Buffalo over comparable jobs/$$ in other franchises will impress your friends and feed your ego. Don't think so. That's why we don't get the Reids and Harbaughs of the world. It's a historical fact that the only guys taking jobs in WNY are those washed up old schoolers at the end (Jauron, Donohoe, Ryan) or very very beginning of an exec career (Whaley, Marrone, Williams, Mularkey), because B Lo is the only option they are offered. Buffalo is like a AAA baseball franchise, the minors. And they are right to take it. Better to be the "sort of" GM of the Bills or the HC than to be the "head scout" or OC of a up to date NFL franchise. Got it. But the Bills get low grade exec talent learning on the job which leads to failure after failure on the field and restart after restart. This is the reality. But , hey, at least the franchise is still there! (?). and hey, the tailgates and "gameday" experience are the best! (?).

If you're looking to win, this franchise would be better off in London or San Antonio or Vegas, someplace today's rock star, ego driven, monied NFL people actually can defend to their peers. Sucky thing to say, but hey, how many top FAs do the Bills keep after their rookie deals are up? A handful. that's it. Their agents get them the H out of town, before they become Eric Moulds and get sucked into the pit of suck and are forgotten forever.

Today's rock star, personal brand focussed NFL and its top talent has passed markets like Buffalo, Detroit and Cleveland by and left them to rot. And they are rotting. Sad, but true. Go Bills, for what its worth. Feed the Pats roster with your trainees.

I disagree completely.

I don't know how you can call his turnaround sensational when they did not produce a winner.

Judging whether someone is a "winner" or not based on SB victories is kinda the apex of bad-logic fandom. Badol also forgot to mention that he took over a 1-15 Miami team and got them to 11-5 the next season.

How are the Pegula's in over their head owning two sports franchises? All they do is cut the checks.

That's not accurate. They hire the staff. The Rex hire was simply stupid. The Pegulas as owners can do whatever they want. That doesn't mean that they can't be accountable how things turn out.

You know, it's possible that with a competent HC the Bills might not be in purgatory with DW after all, because the HC will do his best to work with and leverage the talent on the roster (FAs, drafted guys, etc), to hire a competent coaching staff, and also to provide valuable insights into the draft. Rex clearly wasn't that guy, and perhaps with a better OC and overall O talent, Marrone might still be here, and to better results than his eventual successor.

If memory serves, the Pegulas did try to hire the so-called "great football mind", and he (Polian) declined. Plus, it's not like there are great football minds to be had at the drop of a hat, or of a wallet. The Bills could probably hire someone like Mike Shanahan to be the poobah (just throwing that name out there for the purposes of illustration), but it's not a slam dunk.

I think this team turns the corner with a good HC, and good coaching overall. I am not married to DW as GM by any stretch, but adding another layer in management just to change everything, yet again, in X years seems highly counterproductive, and probably isn't worth the time in the first place.

Yeah trying to put some kind of "phony" label on Parcell's after the fact is laughable.

What he did was pretty extraordinary by any measure.

He was an excellent HC, HOFer in fact. Not as good as the front office guy. Won Super Bowls as a HC but not as a front office guy.

Is there anything there factually incorrect?

He took over a 2-14 Pats team and got them to the playoffs in year 2 and the SB in year 4. He took over a 1-15 Jets team (they were 3-13 the year before that too) and got them, successively, to 9-7 and 12-4 (they lost the AFC championship game in Denver to a superior team). He took over a Dallas team that had gone 6-10 three years in a row and got them to 10-6 in his first season there with Quincy Carter. He was the GM of Miami, taking over a 1-15 team and getting them to 11-5 in year one.

Over a 16 year stretch, he took over 4 horrible teams and got them to double digit wins in very short order. The Bills have not had double digit wins since 1999. Nuff said.

This is definitely impressive.

You have to keep in mind, most of us have forgotten what truly good football people look like, and how they operate. Russ Brandon and Marv Levy were both GM's here. That actually happened.

How far back do we have to go here to find a good front office football mind? Polian? Maybe Butler?

I love Pegs but geez how much is he paying guys to NOT be here anymore? I wonder how much he's paying Marrone, Rex, Rob, Bylsma and Tim murray.

It appears he doesn't much care...

He wants to win, isn't that what we wanted in an owner?

Do you think rich guys just automatically know how to run sports franchises?

People in Buffalo are very whiney I think, especially the media...
