SI.com Andy Benoit - Bills biggest need is to replace Tyrod

I agree with you about Whaley... one can only hope he's learned from his past.

I live in Maryland and listen to the DC/MD sports radio shows. The local ESPN show stated that it is reported that the Bills have decided on letting TT walk and going with Cardale. If this is true it not only makes little sense to me but it is a very big gamble.

The TT money is not an extravagant amount for a starting qb no matter how the qb is ranked. However, with the dispatching of TT it makes a challenging cap situation much more simple to work within, especially if the Bills want to keep Gilmore on a franchise tag or a longer term deal.

I am more worried about a frustrated Watkins, Clay and inability to sign any decent WRs in FA because they see a QB who won't see them open, let alone throw them open. I think Whaley and mcdermott are going to keep him because they are scared of the alternative, but I hope they have some onions and do whatever they can to get a QB who can throw on time and see the field. This schedule will not be kind to an offense that can't throw the ball. There are some high octane QBs and offenses even if the defense does improve, the Bills will need at least a more balanced offense to win the majority.

To me, unless they collectively look at Tyrod and conclude that the previous coaches were holding him back and he will be a different QB under this group, starting him again this year would be "same old bills." It kind of reminds me of the Jets sticking with Fitz last year.

Watkins, Clay, and Woods

Yea that's what happened. Sweep the 18-35 191 yard one INT performance under the rug.

Your man got pantsed by one of the worst defenses in the league.

Why talk about Matt Ryan and Tyrod ? Matt Ryan dumped 398 yards and 3 Td's on them with ease then they ate Tyrod's lunch

Apples and oranges, beyond the fact that the Falcons had the highest scoring team in the NFL and reached the SB...........on that day in Oakland the Bills WR corps was banged up, the defense was awful and the Raiders were peaking.........would a Matt Ryan hater point out that Tyrod beat the Pats in Foxboro? :flirt:

Impressive takedown of Jacoby Brissett!

That was his one win vs seven .500 teams!

Deactivate his badge and throw that extension in the shredder asap.

An injured Jacoby Brissett

That was the point.

The situations were entirely different.

As I said though.......look at Tyrod's ypa in the 8 weeks without Watkins.......dreadful.

Otherwise his normal of around 8 ypa.

That's the kind of QB he is........he can ignite a big play offense but he isn't a dink and dunk specialist.

There really isn't much denying that.......the Bills have had more big plays than anyone in the NFL the past two seasons under Tyrod.......hence the high scoring numbers.

Those two seasons happen to be the best back-to-back production years from a Bills QB since Kelly in the mid-90's so not only CAN it get worse......it's been worse for the past 20+ years. :flirt:

Exactly.

The biggest issue people seem to have a problem with is Tyrods cap number the next two years. Like I said, no one will give a **** IF Tyrod is playing well and the team is winning OR they draft a guy early and he emerges as a better option then Tyrod.

However, I agree that it would be idiotic to hold on to Tyrod and not draft a QB early(1st or 2nd round)in this year or next years draft.

Right. Keep Tyrod, draft a QB if you like one, upgrade our WR, S positions with the draft and the cap we have left. Not rocket science.

No thanks. Honestly I'd rather lose with Tyrod than win with Alex Smith. Maybe that's just me.

Its not just you. Im also on that plane. Tyrod and Shady have brought the Bills the most scoring we've seen since the 90s. I dont wanna go back to the anemic Orton and EJ Manuel offenses. Tyrod showed progression in Miami pt2. Let him have another year and see what he can do with a healthy Watkins, a high draft pick rookie WR, and a good established vet WR at his disposal. Bring in a high draft pick S and a solid FA S too.

Tyrod has played most of his career in Buffalo with a gimpy WR squad. Two out of the top 3 WRs are usually injured or playing hurt. This is why we should draft a WR high in R1-R3 and grab a solid vet WR in FA. When Watkins gets hurt we have no one there.

The high scoring numbers came from the running game. Add up both years together and we had more running than passing TDs. By far.

Again, 29 run TDs and 17 pass TDs this year. Last year we had more pass TDs than run TDs, but by one of the lowest amounts in the league.

The Bills have eight more run TDs than pass TDs over the past two years. Care to guess how many teams have a differential of more than eight? That would be zero. Care to guess how many teams have more run TDs than pass TDs over those same two years? Again, zip-padeedoodah.

Thank goodness our run game was productive, because our pass game sure wasn't.

And as for being the most productive Bills QB since Kelly, man, you must be desperate. That's like saying a woman is closer to being an SI swimsuit model than any of the Golden Girls.

Long term QB? No.

Short term as in the next two years? Yes.

I've said many times keep Tyrod AND draft one in the first because the likelihood of getting one better then Tyrod over the next two years is slim to none.... and if by chance the guy you draft IS better then Tyrod then nobody will give a **** about Tyrods cap number as a back up because we would have a solid QB and in all likelihood the team will be winning more then losing.

If you agree that he's here for the next two years, then you're advocating paying a bridge QB $40.5 mill for two years. That would make him the highest-paid bridge QB in the history of the NFL, pretty close to double the next highest bridge guy whoever he was exactly. Fitz in Buffalo, maybe? And on a team with severe cap restrictions. This does not make sense.

And having cap problems drastically reduces your chances of winning. Particularly when your team severely lacks depth and is changing scheme which generally means roster turnover.

And you are absolutely kidding yourself if you think nobody would care if we draft somebody and he beats out Tyrod. If that happened the board would be filled with frustration ... "Why did we pay Tyrod $40.5 mill for two years of play, a lot of which has been spent on the bench because of the emergence of QB YoungGuy?" And they'd have that concern for good reason. It would make us less able to take advantage of having that good young QB supported by good players around him.

I hope I'm wrong but my instincts about Whaley suggests that he is not going to use a high draft choice on a qb. Whaley tends to value his selected players more highly than he sometimes should. So I think he is going to be hesitant to use a high pick on a qb because he is enamored with Cardale as his prized future prospect.

In my ideal world I would love a trade down in the draft to select Mahomes. This is a rich defensive talent draft so we still can address needs with the other picks. Whaley's performance has been uneven in how he has handled his drafts. Where he makes his mark is getting good mid-range value from the free agent market. While we put a lot of attention on the draft what is going to be the most important factor in reworking this roster is the smart way he makes his acquisitions from the market.

Agreed that FA is where he's had an awful lot of his success. And with our current cap difficulties, he's not going to be able to do too much there.

If you can run the ball into the end zone........why pass it?

7th in the NFL in scoring means that his offense was outscoring 25 other QB's...........if they were throwing the ball more and scoring less.......like the other 25 QB's.......then people would be asking why they aren't running the ball more when they are leading the NFL in ypa?

Is he the 7th best QB in the NFL?

Of course not.

Then why do certain clowns want him to throw the ball more?

This is what happens.......the team runs for over 200 yards and scores a bunch of points and a few knuckleheads look at the stats postgame like "see that, Tyrod didn't throw for 300 yards again":doh:

You want one of the 7 best QB's in the league under contract for the next 5 years?

Me too............where is he?

NOT AVAILABLE.

And if you are lucky to find one.......they've been looking for over two decades........ the open market is going to be $30M long term with a $100M+ guarantee.......Tyrod is a relative value while the search for Joe Franchise continues.

By winning do you actually mean 7-9 with no shows scattered all over ?

This tweet says it all from a scout.

"QB coaches I've talked with understand how they would need to use Tyrod, but get frustrated by what he cannot do, thus limiting offenses"

Benoit is one of the best in the business but I think this highlights how difficult of a decision this really is - credible football minds disagree about what Tyrod brings to the table and whether the Bills should keep him.

one of the best in the biz? what? nope

You continue to trot out 29 TDs rushing vs 17 passing as proof that tyrod is terrible. You realize that tyrod had 6 of those rushing TDs right? Therefore he accounted for 23 TDs. Does it matter that he ran instead of passed or does it matter that the team scored them with him leading them?
