Mississippi_logo.gif Chad Kelly, QB, Ole Miss

Height: 6-2. Weight: 215.

Projected 40 Time: 4.75.

Projected Round (2017): 4-6.

12/7/16: A torn ACL ended Kelly's 2016 season early, and given the timing of the injury, he won't be able to work out completely for NFL teams prior to the 2017 NFL Draft. Kelly will attend the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine surely, but won't be able to do all the drills. His team interviews will be critical as he is going to get grilled about his off-the-field antics.

Kelly completed 63 percent of his passes in 2016 for 2,758 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions. In losses to Alabama and Florida State where Ole Miss blew big leads, Kelly had terrible turnovers via bad decisions in crunch time, which made the comebacks possible.

Overall, Kelly's performances this season confirm his gun-slinger style of play. He has the arm to make any throw, but could stand to get more consistent in his field vision, accuracy and decision-making. While Kelly can't be blamed for his defense struggling in allowing comebacks to Florida State and Alabama, Kelly doesn't show the leadership and intangibles to push his team to tough victories. He doesn't have a killer instinct and gets rattled by pressure; both the physical pass rush and the mental/emotional pressure of critical moments in big games.

Kelly also needs to check his ego and clean up his off-the-field issues, too. He has had problems such as yelling at Clemson fans - while a Clemson student - in the stadium parking lot after a fender bender, getting arrested for a bar fight that involved threatening a mass shooting, running onto the field at his brother's high school game, trash-talking teammates on twitter, pursuing porn stars on twitter, creating a self-loving rap song; the list goes on with "Swag" Kelly. Being the nephew of Jim Kelly seems to have created an "Affluenza" quarterback.

When you add in the off-the-field issues from Kelly's ego and behavior, it adds to the questions about his on-field intangibles and ability to lead a team. He has a big arm, but I don't think he has the decision-making and steadiness in his play to be a franchise quarterback. Kelly doesn't strike me as a winner.

And there is nothing in this evaluation that gets me excited. He's a punk, has never been a winner, and doesn't appear to have any outstanding qualities as a player. Was that your point?

He doesn't have attitude problem that was taken care when he left Clemson 3 yrs ago, going on the Field to defend his brother wasn't the best move but does show his loyalty. Affluenza is hot garbage.

Kelly is winner but didn't have the Oline to protect him nor the weapons he had last yr. If his Jr. yr was his Senior yr he would be a first round pick.

He does need to make better decisions and not trust his arm so much but that is not much different than uncle Jim.

He has first round Talent and the best arm in the draft. he had 3rd round production. His off field was old news but the brother incident brought all that back. I think he is worth taking a flyer on.

you can't be serious

This.

Meh was just some weed. Tons of "weed guys" have fell in the draft and had monster careers.

Dont care about the drug as much being just weed.

Do care about his poor decision after poor decision after poor decision rinse and repeat

Jim Kelly was an idiot at that age too and if media had been then what it is now, he probably would have never had a career. Chad is an idiot and probably an !@#$, but that doesn't mean he can't be a great NFL player.

Really Jim threatend a Bar with an AK

Routinely fought other students

Walked off field at spring practice

Was kicked out of numerous schools

No earlier than a 5th on the guy

So do you think he'll be there at #12?

I kid, I kid. This guy will be lucky to be a UDFA. The Manziel comparisons are fair and a huge red flag. Ole Miss was a top 10 team when the season began and they finished sub-500? Don't let his pedigree lure you.

Sounds like a kid who needs some from professional help and not be demonized. If this criteria was applied to all NFL players, and we actually knew about things they did, there wouldn't be a league. Over the last two years at Ole Miss he played very well and was incident free except for the St. Joe's thing. That was really dumb but I think it pales in comparison to what a lot of NFL players are doing.

I don't think it would be a good idea for Chad Kelly to be drafted by the Bills. He would always have that aura of Uncle Jim over him, adding to the pressure. He'd be better off on another team.

You never know. He'll still have to prove himself because he won't be a high round pick.

Sure ok. You know they also said the same thing about Manzeil and Leaf.

But hey draft him and give him millions and what what happens

Sounds like you didn't watch any Ole Miss games this year. The o-line was terrible all season, the defense was a sieve. They made Vandys offense look like a powerhouse and the auburn game was very similar to our second Miami game this year. Kelly kept scoring but the defense couldn't stop squat.

Although I still wouldn't touch Kelly until at least the fifth round if I were a team. His skill sets are taking 5-7 step drops then throwing. Current NFL is all about quick throws now and he'd take a lot of sacks trying to make a play

Unless you count him rolling blunts right after the injury. I am with Major Bobby on that though. I don't care about the weed; I care about the decision making.

i wonder if he even gets drafted. acl injury, the weed pic, all the incidents etc. not what the nfl wants especially at the qb position.

I think that it is more likely that he is undrafted than drafted. Matt Miller's 7 round mock has him as Mr. Irrelevant. Some team that loves his talent may take a flier late in hopes of harnessing it. I think that the more likely scenario (maybe 65%) is that he goes undrafted and signs as a priority FA with something to prove (and a short leash).
