Not even because of egregious favoritism, but just because it's no fun to watch a game when a flag nullifies every other play. It's like watching a basketball game that degrades to a free throw competition. I don't know what the answer is, but it seems there are either too many rules or the rules are too stringent because it's getting ridiculous. Agreed. Part of it is for the refs to not make ticky tack penalty calls when the penalty had absolutely no bearing on the outcome of the play. Prime example: Brady is sacked by Dareus on a crucial third and long. He's sacked immediately, never had a prayer to get the ball out of his hand. Ref calls a really minor defensive hold on a DB. Automatic first down. Thats a situation where IMO they gotta let that go. That penalty changed the entire game, and its silly because Brady never had a chance to get the ball to the penalized player anyways. That's a ref inserting themselves into the game. More and more calls are subjective, giving the refs more and more control over the outcome of a game. For years I've assumed its so that the league could grant favor to select teams and players; thereby, alllowing for preconceived story lines to develop and promote future games. Imagine the ratings if Cleveland and Buffalo play a playoff game together. Now, imagine a Denver and Colts game. Who do you think brings in the better story lines, better "drama", better TV ratings. That's not to say the league is picking winners and losers. But, its a whole lot easier to win when you get one or two drives extended because of a mysterious defensive holding. Every year myself and a few friends pick the games each week, and pick the SuperBowl teams in August. In the last couple of years, we've gotten extremely good at picking Superbowl teams, just by going on who's good and who would be favored by the league. 5 years ago, we'd be lucky if one of us even got one of the Championship game participants. Why there's more this year than any other... I'm not sure. But, it makes watching pretty much any game sans the Bills almost unbearable! The Number would only mean something to me if we knew how many accepted penalties there were through 3 games last year. Anybody Know? I do agree that there seems to be WAY more penalties called this year. Its making the game difficult to watch. This year.. Is the record number. Running into the kicker/punter is when you make minimal (if any) contact with the kicker/punter or impede his ability to land after kicking. Roughing is when you go for a block and he gets the kick off and you basically tackle the kicker/punter. I can't remember if it was the Pats or the Fish game where a player basically tackled the punter and they called in running into the kicker. Does anyone remember that? Ridiculous.
