Or 78% (21/27) a couple seasons back? Heck, Folk an 80% career kicker. Carp has a week to figure out his swing, but I'm not sure why Rex is on his back side because he seems to have given Folk A LOT of slack during his tenure in NY. Well, I'm not sure, but I think there are a couple of factors here. I don't think it's an accident that Rex keeps mentioning Gay. It's cutdown time. Coaches hate to cut players, especially sympatico "Player's coaches" hate to cut players. So Rex is crab-assed about having the ST specialists take up 4 roster spots instead of the usual 3 and having to cut an extra player. That raises his standards for kickers. It's kind of like Rex has "head coach PMS" right now, KWIM? Second, I think, is the change in rule for extra point. The extra point is now a 33 yd field goal. While Folk was a lower percentage overall kicker, he was perfect, 100% from 30-39 yds while Carpenter only 92% from 30-39 yds. Carpenter has not only missed 3 FG (two from 40-49 yds where you would like it to be "Money"), he's missed an extra point. Rex wants to know he can count on that extra point. In fact given his druthers with the rule change, he might swap a couple percent on the longer stuff for more certainty on the 33 yd extra point. It's kind of like Rex has "head coach PMS" right now, KWIM? I think this is a huge part of it. The Bills are the only team carrying 2 kickers. The idea being that they have a 90% FG kicker and a guy who achieves (very high percentage) touchbacks. Most teams get by with an 85-87% kicker who can also get a reasonable number of touchbacks. In order for the Bills' approach to work, the 2 players BOTH have to be above average; otherwise you are better off with an average kicker plus another player. I think one of his biggest is that he is a champion for the D players but doesn't seem to understand the offensive side and how important confidence is to some of the skill positions. On D you can just attack and be emotional. On O you have to execute and the QB and Kicker need to be confident to do well. Carpenter was great last year and is just coming back from injury. Now you are going to call him out and get in his head after six kicks? And there sits Darby who has struggled mightily and you seem to give him a free pass. I think he should be approaching a few missed kicks differently. Everybody, kickers especially, know if they start missing too many their job will be on the line. The hamstring should not be affecting his kicking at this point. Otherwise he should not be cleared. NFL kickers have a very lonely existence. They have one job. In Carpenter's case he had half a job. Players and coaches do not take kindly to that one job not getting done. I don't know whether calling guys out publically is good or not. Probably depends on the player. But IMO I wouldn't care either what he did in the past. There are games to play in 10 days and they need a reliable kicker, end of story. We need a good reliable kicker and Carpenter hasn't looked that way so far this preseason Actually many veterans have not looked good this preseason. I think it is due to Camp Rex. I think you are missing how important rhythm, timing and confidence is to a kicker. I'm sure he's healthy enough to kick, but perhaps not completely in-tune yet. And you are right about needing a reliable kicker in 10 days. My money is on Carpenter. And if he's cut, my money is on Carpenter kicking better for his new team than the guy the Bills sign. He is now the Saints starting kicker. There will be a cut tomorrow of a guy that is very very very very LIKELY going to be a reliable kicker in the NFL, like about 99.9999999% likely. And there are multiple teams which have cut kickers and gone thru 2 and 3 kickers in a year and not found a good one. I think you earned a D in logic and an F in math.
