Spotrac Contract Forecast: CJ Spiller

Recommended Posts

he is actually already at the age of (or i think older than) the guys that have typically gotten those MONSTER deals. he will be 28 going into the 2015 season, the first year of his new contract. I would not expect him to see 5 year 40m+ type of money at that point - especially with a mixed resume that he will have. unless he gets a 300 carry year AND stays healthy we are not talking about elite cornerstone dollars. we are more likely talking about 200 rushes, 50 catches and elite role player dollars

He may not even get 300 snaps. Seriously the guy HAS to step up the other phased of his game. Now they have another guy that can hit home runs when he gets to edge too.

Pass protection

Inside runs

Running behind blocks

Running routes

Moving chains

These are keys to the game he's gotta master if he wants to be a feature back instead of a 12 touch/gm specialist.

ive always called him a 15-18 touch guy (and those spread across a variety of ways to get him in space from rushes, screens, some receiving work, even returns potentially though weve got a lot of candidates there)..... but i think that i think the greats among those guys are more valuable than you do. he can and has been among the elite there. that said, those guys arent getting peterson/johnson money like some think he has a shot at. those guys get reggie bush money.

Stop screwing around and sign the guy now, before he has a great season and is out of here. How many players that we have developed have we lost. We constantly are 10-15 million per year under the cap. Get it done.

what happens if we resign him now and he had another miserable season like he has every year except 2012?

What happens if we don't, New England does, and they rediscover his screen game skills, and with Brady, he improves on his 2012 stats?

im not worried. He had one good season out of 4. 1 average at best. And 2 piss poor seasons. I'll take the gamble that he isn't a good back. He's a gimmick player that needs all the perfect situations to have success.

Either way. I'm not scared of going up against CJ Spiller. Ever. Set your OLBs outside the edge and dare him to run inside.

Fortunately the Patriots* don't over pay free agents. Highly unlikey he would go there.

I would say 4 years 20 million with the 1st 2 years guaranteed with performance escalators built in, in case this coaching staff learns how to use his skllls.

I think $5.4M average for a 4 year deal is a touch on the high end considering the value hit that the RB position has recently undergone... At the same time, I believe he has the skills to outplay that evaluation... All in all, if we can extend his contract for an annual hit of $4.5-&$5.5M I wouldn't be too upset... Any more than that and I feel we would be overpaying

@SalSports The Reggie Bush deal w/ #Lions fits Spiller. $4M per year, only the signing bonus g'teed, leaving room to restructure or get out.

According to
, CJ contract forecast 3yr, $12.2M. OK. Sign me up. That's less than McKelvin is making and CJ himself making right now

The Bills could afford to double that and still be in a good shape.

If Spiller gets an agent that understands the reality of the RB position in 2015 and the Dougs want to keep him they should be able to get a deal done.

If Spiller wants out he can get out. To play Devil's advocate, except when FJax went down, Spiller never got the chance to be the man (mostly because FJAx is one of the greatest RBs in the game; the Rodney Dangerfield of RBs.) Spiller may just want to start fresh where he has a chance to be the man.

In 2015 that isn't a reality everyone has RBBC that doesn't mean Spiller doesn't want to try.

I think the Broncos are a team that would overpay if they don't win the SB this year and Manning returns for 2015.

I don't see the Bills signing him now. For it to make sense for the Bills it would have to be a team-friendly contract that would be attractive enough to be able to trade Spiller if it comes to that, or worst case cut him without substantial penalty (i.e. little to no guaranteed money). But there is no reason for Spiller to sign a team-friendly contract like that at this point.

Maybe he will get more, but there is a definite trend towards not paying RB top dollar with the exception of franchise type backs like Peterson...

It will be interesting for sure

I don't see it happening in Denver. They let Moreno walk.

I think 4-5 million dollar seems about right. I don't think any back will get big money in the near future. Teams don't value them at all.

Spiller will play out the year and take his chances out on the open market. The market for him will either collapse or open up depending on how he does this year. The Reggie Bush contract is a solid bench mark for him but his standing will be much different after this season.

I'd hate to see him go, but if I'm Spiller I'm looking for a team that spreads out the defense with a diverse passing attack, and a QB/OC who can effectively set up screens and put the ball where it needs to go. If we see that this year I imagine he stays. But if our QBs keep leading him into tackles for a loss I imagine he'll move on to greener pastures.
