Bills D finishes #1 in NFL in yards allowed per drive

Bills D allowed 25.78 yards per drive, number 1 in the NFL, even more impressive considering they faced 209 drives against, most in the NFL(33 more than the average of 186)...

Bills D finished 4th in Defensive DVOA at -13.4 behind only Seattle, Carolina and Arizona a year after finishing 27th, despite having the 2nd worst opponent starting field position, averaging a drive start at their own 31 yard line(thanks offense)

D finished 4th in plays per drive, 6th in TOP per drive, 4th in drive success rate, 8th in punts per drive , 13th in 3 and outs per drive, 6th in both points and touchdowns per redzone appearance...

Finished 10th in total yards allowed, 6th in yards per play, and the reason other teams seemingly converted so many 3rd downs against us is because we forced more 3rd downs than any other team in the NFL(245), even tho at 37% we were 13th in the NFL...

Pretty impressive and shows how much improvement can happen in one year...

On the flip side, the Bears were the reverse of us, going from #1 in defensive DVOA last year to 25th this year...

Have you asked yourself why this might be?

Here's an exercise for you and anyone else that thinks that this stat is meaningful this year.

Take a look at the schedule, and how many yards each of the teams on it gained against us, then contrast that with their offensive yardage rankings.

Then ask yourself why you think this status exists.

This is the kind of thing that everyone gets excited over but which is largely circumstantially based, so when it doesn't happen again the following season everyone's left scratching their noodle instead of already knowing why it didn't repeat.

Thanks for posting this. Great turnaround for the defense. They were very fun to watch this year. Pass rush is king on defense.

As for the offense.......well the Indy preseason game was fun to watch. I know we are all sick of the up-the-middle runs on 1st and 2nd down but given a top 15 QB I would be willing to bet that Hackett and Marrone can stir up a top 10 offense.

Marrone needs to go to "gameday" school this winter though. The better the team gets the more glaring those mistakes will look.

Not buying any of these so-called "stats." Jerry Sullivan says our defense still sucks.

Hmmmm...not true, I think the year we missed with Bledsoe when the Steelers backups beat us to keep us out we were top 10

Yeah the Bills had an excellent offense in both 2002 and 2004. That's really it though.

When a team has a lead, they don't need to push the ball downfield quickly. Just milk the clock and get enough for a 1st down to continue milking the clock until they get in FG range. So some of this can be attributed to the other team not needing alot of yards. Plus the Bills special teams gave up a lot of big returns which gave their opponents a shorter distance to score.

Well, that would be all well and good, but on average, the Bills held a small lead over the season

This topic does nothing but polishes a turd. The D never performed against a quality team. They can dominate crap teams but stink against good ones, especially on the road...NE, Tampa, etc. That's the true measurement, not this crap that is cited here.

Defense forced 2nd most punts per game at 5.9. Offense punted the most at 6 per game. Punting teams were horrible. Gave up 5 yards more net per punt than we got, resulting in losing 30 yards per game. Kickoff teams not much better. Opponents had 25 more kickoff returns (they had higher touchback %) and netted 3 yards more than we did per return. That's another almost 5 yards lost due to the kicking team. Special teams cost us 35 net yards per game. Add 35 yards per game to our defensive totals and that drops our defense from 10th overall to 20th.

Holding a team to barely over 100 yards over the final 3 quarters including 7 yards in the second half is pretty freaking good...on the road against Tampa

Ok, take away the 36 extra drives we allowed on defense over the average team and that probably takes us from

10th to 3rd...see how fun the what if game can be?

36 extra drives is about an extra full three games worth of possessions for our D to have faced...

When you extract out the 80 yard run on the 1st play…..

I don't know why any fan tries to justify that team on any level. They sucked against any decent team and just could not stop the run. If you can't stop the run for a full 60, tell your story walking.

36 extra drives is irrelevant since our offense had 36 extra drives as well. Simply the tempo Marrone decided to play at. I was actually trying to defend our defense by pointing out how bad our special teams were. Offense was almost as bad as the special teams. Defense was the only thing preventing Bills from being a 2 or 3 win team.
