Maybe it was a case of staffing in Detroit, but he has the most to prove out of the hirings so far. He has an NFL track record with some poor results. I get that Bobby April no doubt did not want to stay on after not getting the interim coach assignment that went to Fewell, or the HC job he interviewed for after Jauron. A lot of guys walk away under that set of circumstances because it's like their 'nads were cut off and how can you command respect like that, combined with getting the he-double L away from a franchise that's wandering in the desert and wouldn't know what the playoffs were if it slapped them. I hold no animosity there. I'm reading initially that Dey-Twaa's units improved down the stretch this season against some teams with strong ST. But they gave up KO & punt-return TDs two weeks in a row earlier in the year. Anyone know what Crossman had to work with for ST roster there? Admittedly, McK came into the return position very well under DeHaven. But the whole KO specialist, and then punter change thing this season was a complete rooster-up, as the Brits say. Underutilized Lindell (or had no confidence in?) and had him kicking to the 5-10 (by design, as I've seen Lindell say in past articles) way too much in his tenure, which isn't Dehaven's fault because even April was doing that, but it is a problem given the rules change for the KO spot and coverage. He has an NFL track record with some poor results. yea... im not sure how i feel. detroit as a whole was an undisciplined mess. so im not sure how much you put on the ST coach for their MANY blunders on special teams, and how much is that they have created a circus in the building as a whole. remember their returner kneeling at the 5 yard line a couple weeks ago? 4 touchdowns allowed in 2 weeks? disaster. A good leader should always hire the best people he can (including those who could end up being their replacement). The ability to work together is important, but the end result -- not comfort level -- is the bottom line. Not too impressed with this hire, or with Driesbach if his Central Bucks West connection got him the job... [insert name of anyone other than DeHaven] is a a much better coach than DeHaven, and will improve our ST dramatically. [insert name of anyone other than DeHaven] does not believe in directionaly punting out of bounds, releasing your veteran punter mid-season, pushing to draft and then inactivating a kick-off specialist, and having kick coverage units and schemes that are consistently medicore to poor. We've been stealing from staffs that are circuses and often giving promotions to those guys.... I wouldn't call us top tier yet but it's nice to be getting guys over other teams instead of ones that are otherwise unemployed, ill give you that. It's special teams. You're not implementing a philosophy on special teams. Its just coaching a bunch of guys up to cover a kick well and return a kick well. You don't need to like, or even have familiarity with your ST coordinator, you just need someone who can get the job done. He didn't do that in Detroit so I question whether he'll get it done here.
