If I'm a HC candidate and I look at the Bills, what do I see?

Roster:

 

-- Game-breaking RB (Spiller)

-- 1000-yd WR three times running (Stevie)

-- Above-average OL with depth (need to re-sign Levitre)

-- Above-average DL with depth

-- Young, talented secondary (contingent upon re-signing Byrd)

-- 8th overall pick in 2013 Draft

 

Front Office:

 

-- Removal of meddlesome owner from day-to-day operations

-- Progressive, forward-thinking 43-year-old President/CEO

-- Organization adding analytics department to assist in player evaluation

-- 40-year-old GM-in-waiting who is highly respected

-- GM recognized as a top scout/talent evaluator

 

Miscellaneous:

 

-- Home game atmosphere one of best in league

-- Chance to restore proud franchise to greatness (i.e., can be a hero)

 

Negatives:

 

Roster:

 

-- No "franchise" QB

-- Questionable WR depth

-- Weak LB corps

 

Front Office:

 

-- 73-year-old GM still running the show (for how long?)

-- Do you trust Brandon not to meddle in football decisions?

I agree mostly, but I think there's also two things to consider... the geographic area, WNY isn't for everyone... and Buffalo's recent history of poor decision making in the FO. How much of that is going to really change?

I think the Brandon move and Whaley as gm address' the FO question to some degree. Nothing you can do about where Buffalo is. A guy should not even interview if that is a 'concern' . And you are correct that some guys would not coach there i am sure.

i think about Spurrier at SC. The icing on the cake for him was where the university was in relationship to Augusta National where he got a membership when he signed to coach the Cocks.

You forgot special teams...

We have historically good special teams, with solid players who contribute consistently on coverage units, and an up and coming Hands Carrington.

A good kicker, a solid punter, and that is important.

Veteran leadership across the board.

 

The biggest take away from the players is that many of them are hold overs from a losing regime.

Another positive: Short season. You know you'll only have to work 16 games. None of that pesky overtime that some guys have to put in during January & February.

You forgot special teams...

We have historically good special teams, with solid players who contribute consistently on coverage units, and an up and coming Hands Carrington.

A good kicker, a solid punter, and that is important.

Veteran leadership across the board.

 

The biggest take away from the players is that many of them are hold overs from a losing regime.

 

Our special teams have been pedantic under DeHaven except for Carrington's 5 blocks.

I really question the Veteran Leadership. Other than Eric Wood there is none who is vocal. The "team" leaders are Bart Scott and George Wilson who would not be starters on 31 other teams in this league and Merriman is done and not coming back. This team needs leadership at the QB position and LB position.

I have got to agree with everything you said.

 

As a potential candidate, I would ask about the future of Levitre and Byrd and what's the FO plan for those two.

 

If the defense improves and the offense can stay explosive then you have a combination that can and will win.

What job is perfect? You forgot to mention "lease ensures team stays put for at least 7 years." We are certainly more attractive than 3 years ago.

No one is taking this job and relocating their family, etc etc etc (and anyone who's done it knows how disruptive that is) when other comparable jobs are available. Why? Because as soon as ownership changes (which could be this year, for all we know), you get fired and replaced by the new regime (see Cleveland for the latest example of that -- I'll bet Pat Shurmer is glad he took THAT gig). If the Bills are the only HC job left on the board, fine, you take it if its offered, but not until the well of stable offers is dry. This is just human nature. Bills will watch the stable franchises pick off the best guys and we will get another GaileyWanny combo. Watch it happen. There is no other way it can go.
