RkFast
I think its time for us to have a "national conversation" about the popular notion about how "great" Houston's rendition of the SSB is. IT STINKS. It does. Its bombastic, out of time, loud and she makes it all about HER. She sings that dreck any other day besides two weeks after Desert Strom begins and people wouldnt have given it a second thought. This is how its done....here.... Its fine. Its what you would expect someone like Whitney Houston to sing. It is NOT NOT NOT "the greatest rendition ever" or the Gold Standard of how the song should be sung. Not even CLOSE. I don't enjoy singers who go way over the top like Ms. Houston, but the homage to America wouldn't come in the form of a song if we didn't want people to personalize it. That's the nature of music appreciation...mindless carbon copies aren't welcome. People complain about earnest, humble renditions of the Star Spangled Banner sung badly out of tune by amateurs. They do. I've been to plenty of minor league baseball games where some local teenage girl comes out, sings respectfully but poorly, and receives polite applause and then people talking behind her back about how awful it was. I think Whitney Houston was a terrific singer, though I never loved her songs. I think she inspired a whole wave of awful, over the top singers, and that is too bad. She had much more restraint than those who came after her. I think her version of the anthem was really good...not sure if it is the "best ever", but I think it ranks up there as one of the least embarassing of those sung by other pop stars. Since you mentioned it, what is, to your ears, the best you have ever heard. If you say Steven Tyler or Roseann Barr, it doesn't count!

I don't agree, but probably for different reasons. You are right in that the time and place played a large role, but what I absolutely love about her rendition is not just her voice, but how she sang it. She sang it with a pride and joy on her face and confidence in her lyrics that truly made it stand out for me. Granted, I'm sure a lot of it had to do, as well, with the moment itself...a Bills game, everyone waving flags, etc. But it was a gold standard to me. Of course, I also spent a torrid sexual weekend with Whitney just outside Hilton Head back in '87, so I'm a little biased. Dante
I'm a little caught off guard by the national outcry over her passing. It could be my perspective being I've never held entertainers in high regard. But really how long has it been since she has been relevant? 15 years? Her and the husband had a reality tv show a few years ago and she didn't come off as a very nice person at all. As for the SB anthem I always thought it was a good job. I thought I read somewhere it was lip synced. I was disappointed when I read that but I have no idea if this is true or not. Could never bring myself to watch that game again to look closer Edited February 16, 2012 by Dante

Could never bring myself to watch that game again to look closer I'm not a fan of Whitney Houston's music, and I suspect many others feel the same way. There's this weird contagion where an entertainer dies and people feel compelled to pretend they were fans. She had an awesome voice, but channeled it mainly into schmaltzy ballads. One half-step above adult contemporary just because of the innate talent. Her most famous song (you know which one) is a big eye-roller as far as I'm concerned. I said it right in the Whitey Houston thread OTW and made the same point Buftex does above about inspiring a generation of crappy performers, but I was drowned out by all the lemmings declaring how they still had chills from her rendition.
