Trade down angle...

Recommended Posts

Not sure if anyone brought this up but with the 10th pick we'll have a shot at the last "top tier" OT in this draft--either Reiff or Martin. Though neither appears to be a franchise tackle who would garner a big haul, the laws of supply and demand put us in a good spot. Is there a team drafting mid-round or a tad later who might get antsy (that's the key) and trade up? If so, we can still nab either Upshaw or Ingram and pick up another pick. If that happens, do you think we score an extra 2nd or 3rd? Either way, we get a player we need in the 1st and an additional "free" quality player. Let the bashing begin!!!!

Strap yourself to the yardarm! The Bills do not trade down, they may trade back into the first round, but they are not trading down period.

It sounds good but by trading down do we miss out on a jem in Upshaw ? The guy is built like Terrell Suggs & bigger than James Harrison if he has the type of career those guys have had man that would be SWEET !!

And you know if we have him at our pick & pass on him the next couple of years it will be like the Haloti Nagta pick Oh We should have took him or the Orapko pick or the Matthews pick (O.K. i'm getting  again) but you get what i'm saying . They were all sitting there when our pick came around & we passed them up & i say if he's there don't F around grab him !!

Well Depending on just how bad the team wanting to move up are willing to part with , if it is like Atlanta last year then O.K. i could see it but other than that

JUST SAY NO !!!

I don't think Upshaw will slide out of the top ten-twelve picks.

ABSO-frigging-TIVELY!!!

simple... if the guy we want, will still be there when the team that wants to swap with us drafts... then do it

no brainers: our 10 for the bengals 17 and 21

question: would you deal with the devil and give our 10 for the pats 27 and 32?

Courtney Upshaw, Outside Linebacker, Alabama

Getting a pass-rusher is something Buffalo has struggled to do for years. Shawne Merriman was a bust at outside linebacker and now the team is playing with out-of-position inside 'backers on the edge. The 2012 draft is weak on pass-rushers, but Courtney Upshaw has the exciting blend of athleticism and playmaking skill to warrant a Top 10 pick.

Upshaw will step in and be an immediate starter, with the task of attacking Tom Brady twice each season. He has Terrell Suggs-like talent and athleticism. Bills' fans should love this selection.

What you described is what you want Upshaw to be, BUT you didn't describe the actual player.

If Upshaw were what you described than yes it is a no brainer.

To put it in terms most Bills fans should understand, he probably isn't going to be a 9 sack a year guy, like Cornelius Bennett.

He is likely a great all around backer like Daryl Talley or some where in between.

Which is still a great player.

Just don't expect a Terrel Suggs. TAMBA HALI type of player.

Because that player will be Whitney Mercilus.

This is exactly where you could use a scumbag wheelerdealer salesguy like Brandon involved to get maximum value.

Nix is a simple good ole boy, so he will play it safe, take his pick and get at least one solid player out of the draft. Whereas a businessperson might be able to make a sweet deal for the Bills if he can find the right buyer.

But bottom line, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for a trade down from Buddy Nix. Not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing, just not his style from what I've seen so far.

In a second for either. But it won't happen, they are not that stupid or that desperate to make that sweet a trade for us. More like their 1st and a 2nd. Then it would be a gamble. A whole lot of talent in the 1st and the first half of the 2nd. After that it is a gamble if someone that fills the Bill's needs and has the talent to start and actually make an immediate impact is still available. We need help now, we have waited for 10 years to rebuild and have sat still for way too long. We need to be competitive again NOW!

which is one of the reasons why they draft so poorly.

Extra picks let you miss a little

If we could move down 7/8 spots and pick up an extra 3rd this year and a 3rd next year, I'd do it in a heartbeat. I wouldn't have moved down last year but we always pick 9-10-11-12-13 and look at what those spots have done for us. Grab the extra picks whenever possible. I'm sure Cleveland is really crying about having those extra Atlanta picks this year!

Maybe, but right now in 2012 for the Buffalo Bills, do they need a mix of Cornellius Bennett and Daryl Talley All around great LBs or do they Need Tamba Hali\Terrell Suggs - sack master (although Suggs shouldn't be stuck in the sack specialist box like Hali).

Also who has the lowest "floor".

Mercilus has some major bust potential .

Upshaw is going to be a good LB almost no matter what. His floor is a good LB and then his Ceiling is almost as high as Mercilus.

If I'm Buddy Nix, I need more of sure thing at OLB.

I'd rather see Upshaw as the pick.

I'm just worried that the fans are going to call him a bust if he doesn't get 20 sacks, but instead sets the edge stops the run and gets like 6.5 sacks.

Not only does Mercilus get to the QB, he plays the run well and holds the edge also. The guy had 22.5 tackles for loss. He also causes turnovers when he hits people. He had 14 FF's this season alone I believe. Mercilus could be our next Bruuuuuce and who wouldn't want one of those on your team?

Do you think he is going to be a 3-4 DE or a 3-4 OLB or a 4-3 DE?

There has only been 1 Bruuuuuuuce in the history of the NFL and there will probably never be another.

To put it into context Bruce Smith was like the Wayne Gretzky or Jerry Rice of 3-4 DEs no one will ever touch or come close to his sack numbers from the 3-4 DE position not to mention what he did to stop the run.

No D-Co would scheme to allow a 3-4 DE the opportunity to break Smith's sack record even if they somehow found another freak of nature, determined, athlete like Bruce.

So there will never be another Bruuuuuce but there will be guys that can get sacks as 3-4 OLB or 4-3 DE.

I just don't know what Mercilus projects better at. . . .

If you're saying Mercilus is a 3-4 DE then, yeah I'd pass for Upshaw.

If he's the guy they want then why wouldn't they ensure they get him by picking him at ten? If the Bills feel like the guy they want will be there later in the draft then why is he the guy they want?
