Symbolism over substance.

There's a note of that in this little song.

Wow, what a bush league move. Take a guy who your own team cut no less than two months ago and promote him to captain just to stick it to his previous team? I don't even know what that is...vindictive? Immature?

You don't see us making Brad Smith a captain, do you?

I would almost expect that Brad Smith will be our special teams captain. But ironically, he's on the kick coverage teams… a position that Maybin was unable to fulfill.

I hope that Chan Gailey has something real special cooked up with Brad Smith for this game.

To be honest, its kinda weird to be this pumped up over a Bills/Jets game. The Post actually had a pretty interesting article a few days ago about how even though both teams have obviously played each other twice a year for four decades, there isnt much a rivalry. When the Jets were up, we were down. When we were up, the Jets were down.

Kinda cool to actually get some hate flowing.

Good and interesting point. The Jets actually have a worse all-time record than do the Bills. The Bills also lead the all-time series between the two teams,53-47.

Its a coin toss on the road. WHo gives a rats ass!

They usually have about 4 players there.

I cant believe how time is spent discussing Maybin on this messageboard.

Maybin sucks. WHo cares!

Apparently you care or you wouldn't have posted… with emphasis.

Actually the Jets maintain one "wild card" captain each week, usually for players facing former teams, so I guess Rex does this often. That still doesn't change the fact that he's trying to play games with us.

PTR

Maybin, maybin not. An argument could be made to take this move at face value.

Maybin has 3 sacks in 31 games

All with the Jets, no?

I actually think this is really unfair to Maybin. If Im in his shoes I want to come back quietly, w/o the focus on me and the pressure to have a big game. Rex is really exploiting the kid

You assume that Maybin is an unwilling participant in this. Maybin, maybinot.

I "get" the move as a motivational tactic for both Maybin and the Jets as a whole. But I think what happens is that its a double edged sword as you scream gimmick and desperation to your team.

For a big game like this (Division game between two teams that could be both chasing their division and the wildcard) I don't think you can motivate the other team. If you are a member of the Bills and Jets and you aren't amped for this game there is something wrong with you.

If Brad Smith is special teams captain come the coin flip, one big difference is that the Bills didn't make a media talking point out of the move.

BFD. Who cares if he's a caption, I mean captain.

Good one!

If he's a caption, what is the picture?

Yet another reason why Ryan is just a fat bastard. He knows a lot less about coaching then he does about talking, sucking on feet, and being an annoying prick.

BTW, if you think Rex's fetish is gross, what about his wife? Letting disgusting fat dumpy guys slobber all over your feet? What a catch...

Anyway, this puts pressure on Maybin...And we all know how he responds when the spotlight is on him, by disappearing...And I'd love to see how Maybin will play the run...

BTW, Rex wasn't the only man in some of those videos…

Playing games is part of Rex Ryan's personality, it runs in the family. Who really cares if Maybin goes out for the coin toss, that is about as far as his "Captain" tenure is going to take him. The only thing that matters is what goes on in between the lines in between the whistles.

Yes, the Ryan's DO grandstand… just last week, Rex's twin brother Rob (Dallas DC) was trash talking the Philadelphia Eagles… before the Eagles destroyed the Cowboys on prime time.

I mean really is anybody gonna care if he does? Are any of the Bills players gonna be pis-ed? (maybe wood for not giving back some his 1st round money lol). I think people would laugh and shake there heads rather than be into the situation. After reading he might do it laughed and shook my head. The guy had no sacks in 3 years with the bills and he got 3 tackles (or maybe sacks I don't really know nor care) as a jet. Lets be real this is a non mothaf-kin factor in maybin we are talking bout.

I think it's a creative way to motivate the team for the game. No complaints here.

Just like when REX named LT the "starter" two weeks ago against the chargers and then proceeded to give Shonn Greene 20 carries for 112 yards. I think the ploy both motivated the jets e.g., lets win one for LT and motivated Shonn Greene to run harder.

It be great if professional players didn't need ploys to be motivated for a game, but that scenario is not the reality. Coaches try a lot of stuff e.g., Belichick paying players to start fights in practice, Shuffling the Bills O-line in the preseason, Sean Payton bringing in bball coach Avery Johnson as basically a consultant to motivate players during their superbowl run.

I like a coach who thinks outside the box in terms of how to motivate players - not sure that Maybin as a captain will work though. My criticism of Rex Ryan is that he does it a bit too much through the media, but his overall W/L record has been good.

I think it is going to motivate the Bills players to crush Maybin when they see him.

Speaking of ridiculous, allow me to illuminate Maybin the con-man's most recent quotes:

1. “I’ve never been the kind of guy to do my talking in the media. I do my talking on Sundays on the field." um...Okay Maybin, this is EXACTLY the opposite of what is true. You've done more talking and posturing off the field that anybody in the history of the NFL. This dude has less than 20 career sacks IN ALL OF COLLEGE AND PRO's COMBINED, and he's supposed to be a pass rush specialist.

What you should be saying is you do very little talking on the field and all of it OFF the field. Gimme a break.

2. (from the same article) “Making a statement, that’s for somebody who’s concerned only about their own success...." (he goes on to imply that he's a team guy) Um....Okay Maybin, you had less than two full years college experience and you held out the ENTIRE training camp of your rookie year because you thought you deserved more money. Which we all know you didn't because you couldn't even make the team.

What you should be saying is that you put yourself ahead of the team you selfish liar. I was done posting on Maybin a long time ago but this recent article makes me laugh out loud at what a joke this dude is. I pray to god they play him the whole game because we'll all be watching you "do your talking on the field" as you get your 230lb frame blown upfield every play and we run right at the spot you don't have the ability to occupy.

What a punk. I dare you to make ONE play that is significant to the outcome of a game in the NFL. Just ONE.

We should eliminate a captain to symbolize the loss of the great Kent Hull for this game. It could fire our guys up and pay tribute to a true Buffalo hero!

That's a good idea. One that should be done anyway. He was the Captain of the Bills Offensive Line for the SB years. W/o him and Kelly, those teams don't make the Super Bowl.

Do I want him to even smell Fitz tomorrow nope!......but I think its funny how a few of us really believed maybe could play at this level....and we were blasted on this forum because we supported Maybin, and although no one said that he wasn't talented no said he didn't work hard...his biggest knock was his weight.... once again the kid is a talent, that maybe didnt fit our system of revolving coaches and defensive coor. Maybe if we had rallyed behind the guy instead of comparing him to other players who knows....we could have 3 more sack and 3 more forced fumbles ...... but if he does get a sack tomorrow and celebrate I might smile just a little....
