Wondering abot Johnny White?

Recommended Posts

Since the lock out seems to be here for a while, am looking for things to look forward to when football is finally returns. I was wondering if anyone had seen enough in college of our drafted RB Johnny White to know if he can be the type of back that Marshawn Lynch (excluding Lynch's fine driving skills) was for us. They seem similar in size and both catch the bacll and run hard inside. I think having 3 backs who have different specialities is a good thing si he could be a help.

Put his best performance in a Heels' uni on this past season. Averaged 5.5 per carry. IMO, has better hands than Lynch. Runs well between the tackles and has enough speed to bounce outside on occasion. He wasn't spectacular, but I think he will serve as a nice compliment to Fred and CJ. I think in the long run he will make a solid 1,2 punch with Spiller when Fred is gone.

I'm glad you brought this up. I really liked this pick. The Bills definitely needed more depth at RB with Jackson the starter and Spiller a "specialist". The 5th round was the right time, White seems to have the right combination of size, speed, and most importantly the ability to hit the hole.

Also, this guy has fresh legs. He didn't get a ton of carries in college, which is the main reason he fell so far. He will see playing time in Gailey's offense, and is great protection in case Jackson gets hurt

I just remember watching Xavier Omon's highlight package and thinking we just got a 1000 yard rusher on our hands. Watching White on film, he certainly looks good and many people have said that his injury cost him a much higher draft status. So he looks like a good value pick.

In Buddy we trust?

Omon came from a small school, and did not play against anyone near NFL caliber. There is no way of knowing if a guy like White will be successful in the NFL, but with the 5th round pick it is a low risk high reward situation.

Actually Marshawn is a big running back. He's listed at 5'11" and 220 pounds although he appears to be heavier than that.

At the combine, Johnny White measured a hair under 5'10" and 209 pounds… virtually the exact same size as Thurman Thomas.

Dwane Wright.

Doesn't remind me of Dwayne wright at all. Wright was a pure power back, with virtually no agility or speed. If you are just comparing where they went in the draft (Wright was a 4th?), then I guess that makes sense.

At this point in the draft at this position you look for depth and hope for more...

I didnt know a thing about White and missed any highlights ESPN or NFL Network showed of him so I watched some video highlights of him on Youtube and came away impressed. He has great hands and appears to read his blocks well.

I had no problem when this pick was made, the Bills needed another capable RB and liked the pick even more after watching a lot of his highlights.

people always fall in love with rbs on the roster and see them as sure fire sticks, only to see them cut before the season starts

if white can block and play st better than ganther, or whomever else they bring in to compete for that third rb spot, then he will stick. otherwise he joins the long list of names we all would remember if we saw them but cant seem to put our finger on otherwise

I just re-read this post no one was saying that they "love" this RB or that he is a "sure fire stick".

Personally I liked the pick in the 5th round, since the Bills have no quality depth after Jackson and Spiller. Thought he looked good in limited action in college.

We draft many RB's but almost all the RB's we've taken have produced with the exception of one...i won't mention any names...::COUGH COUGH:: SPILLER ::COUGH COUGH::

Travis Henry, Willis McGahee, Marshawn Lynch, all performed admirably well when they played for us.

I liked the pick in philosophy. The team needed a third running back. Yeah no need to waste a pick in the first four rounds BUT grabbing a back in the early 5th makes a lot of sense. Freddy is older and might not last the season, Spiller isn't a guy you can pound the ball 20+ times to. Having another body to split the load with Freddie or Spiller if one of them gets hurt is a good thing especially considering where they picked him up.

Well Spiller's out-performed McGahee for his first year.

Not sure if you guys check the Da'Norris Searcy thread, but there was a Johnny White mention in the article that was linked:

"Can you tell us something about Da’Norris that isn’t available in his bio or that a lot of people wouldn’t know about him?

I think just as I said, community is very important to him. His teammates are very important to him. He and Johnny White (RB) are very, very close friends so the fact that they are going to Buffalo together… and they are both similar in what I described to you a moment ago. They are both positive members of a team. They are both the kind of people you want in the locker room with you whether you are a player or whether you are a coach."

Sounds good to me - you really gotta like this draft class. So far at least...

McGahee played 0 games and was still recovering from that brutal injury. So technically McGahee's first year was 2004 where he had over 1300 yds from scrimmage and 13 TDs. So no he didn't

Dwane Wright.

D Wright is the guy that made me finally stop pretending I knew a damn thing about how college guys were going to make it in the pros...according to me, at one time, Wright would have been taking the keys to the car, so to speak, from Nate Turner, taking hand offs from Trent Edwards...and Corey Moore, the best college lindbacker I ever saw, would be contemplating retirement this summer... :P

I posted about Johnny White when he was drafted. This was a tremendous pick, particularly in the 5th round. The guy played WR for crying out loud, when the Heels were hit by injuries and suspensions. So yes, he has excellent hands. He is also a "fall forward" runner and is not afraid to put a lick on the guy trying to bring him down. The biggest thing, though, is that he sees and hits the hole quickly. No dancing around.

I agree with those who suggest he could be a part of a successful 1-2 tandem with Spiller when Jackson retires, but I think his abilities will enable him to see some time on the field this season as well (beyond ST).
