I wouldn't even consider Adams - at least not at 41. If you know the test is coming and still can't piss clean that says the guy either has a serious issue with laying off the weed or he's not that bright. Either way it's not good. Add to it his other off field issues with the tattoo scandal and I don't want him this early.

Yeah, I'm not sold on Hill either. He's tall and fast but all the negatives seem to add up to more than the positives. On the other hand, I like Alshon a lot. He has everything but blazing speed - if he's there I'd like to see the Bills snag him.

what our draft board probably really looked like
MDH replied to TheBackupQB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
And I didn't claim to know, hence the words, "my guess..." -
He was considered the 2nd best CB right after the season. Once everybody sat down and looked at the tape he dropped and Gilmore moved up. I'm sure the off field problems came into play but from everything I read/saw Gilmore moved up based on his play not based on Kirkpatrick's problems.

I don't think it looked liked that. My take before the draft after hearing Nix speak was that Gilmore was the "no-brainer" he spoke of. He spoke glowingly about Gilmore more so than any other player. The Bills took absolutely no time in getting their selection in when they could have fielded some calls - that tells you the player they really wanted was still available. My guess is that the Bills had Gilmore rated higher than Barron or Keuchly. -
People think too hard about this. Andrew Luck is easily the best pick even when you take into account where he was selected. 10 years from now he'll be the guy who had the most impact on his team's success. They say there are no "can't miss" selections but barring injury Andrew Luck is a can't miss guy at a position that has the most impact on winning. Gilmore was considered the 2nd best CB by just about everybody, not sure where you're getting your info. Floyd has 3 different drinking violations against him and the position that is deepest in this draft is WR. Skipping Floyd and picking Gilmore was the obvious choice - just not sexy enough for some people.

If they stand pat this is who I could see them taking. Big, strong SEC guy who is "open when he's not open." Not that fast but likes to go up and get the ball.

RD 1, Pick #10: DB Stephon Gilmore - South Carolina
MDH replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Despite LT being a premium position another one hasn't been taken since pick #4 and we're on pick #23. Yet people still have panties in a bunch over not taking one? -
RD 1, Pick #10: DB Stephon Gilmore - South Carolina

Tell us who you would have drafted and we'll look back in a few years and see which pick worked out better. You are a pretty knowledgable fan but you seem to have missed that the league has changed and being able to stop the pass is a prerequisite to winning. Every GM out there that I've heard talk speaks of a few positions that are "big-impact" positions and CB is always one of them. In general I agree with you that you build from the lines out. But there was nobody there worth the pick. With as highly valued as LT's are its very telling that Reiff is still on the board almost an hour later. He wasn't worth the pick. -

And by "reality" you mean agrees with you? I've been with you on your anti-CB rants in the past - but it doesn't apply here. Bills have needs at WR, LB, LT and DB. WR is deep in this draft, they'll get somebody in round 2 (or perhaps 3.) None of the other positions had anybody worth the 10th pick. It was Gilmore or Floyd and Floyd has a ton of bagage and WR is deep. It was a no-brainer choice for what the Bills needed. -

With a passing league teams need to have 3 CBs on the field at most times now - which means your CBs better be good in run support. Getting a guy who can cover and tackle is a good thing. Not sure why people are pissed, the talk was always how deep the WR position was in this draft which meant the Bills were going to go LT, LB or CB. Kalil was the only LT worth the pick, Keuchly was off the board which left only one guy left - Gilmore. It was as obvious as any pick in memory particularly the way Buddy talked up Gilmore pre-draft. This was the guy I thought Buddy was referring to when he said there's a "no-brainer" if he's available. If you're going to get on Buddy for this pick it should be for tipping his hand well before the draft, not for the selection itself. -

I don't think it means that necessarily. I means that in a passing league you have to do two things: pressure the QB and cover their WRs/TEs. They've made huge strides in doing that this offseason. The Bills horrible D should be leaps and bounds better. -

Exactly, how could someone listen to Nix and NOT know this was the pick. I thought this was the guy he thought was a "no-brainer" if he's there. Did you see how fast the Bills got their pick to in? They didn't even bother fielding calls. It's obvious Buddy loves this kid. -
The pass happy NFL has made it more important than ever to get pressure on the QB and have solid CBs. There are a handfull of top flight TEs in the league and there isn't a Safety in the league who can cover them one on one play in play out. Trying to force the issue by drafting one in the top 10 just compounds your problem. Draft a big physical corner and you'd be better off IMO. I've heard coaches discuss having 3 CBs on the field as a base package and getting rid of a Safety - which seems like a much better idea to me when going up against one of the teams with a big athletic TE. Obviously this only works if your CBs can tackle but they should be expected to. Top it off with scouting reports that say Barron's weakness is his coverage skills (not bad, just not fantastic) and I fail to see how he's going to help us stop Gronkowski or Hernandez.

There are very few "game-changer" safeties in the history of the league and I'd venture to guess most of them are in the HoF. They don't come along that often. On the other hand there are plenty of guys who play CB, LT or LB who have the ability to alter games on a regular basis who aren't HoF caliber players. Those positions just have a more significant impact on the game and the guy doesn't have to be a once (or twice) in a decade type player to be worthy of a top 10 pick. Name a less important position than Safety that isn't a kicker? Maybe Guard - and that's why you don't see Guards going in the top 10 either. So yeah, if you think Barron is a HoF type player then he's worth a 10 pick, otherwise do like other teams and grab your safeties with later picks from positions that have a bigger impact on wins and losses.

Is "turtle tank" a euphemism?

I'll go against the grain and say I like what I see in Kuechly. No, he's not Patrick Willis or Urlacher, but not many guys are. Newsflash, if the Bills draft Floyde he won't be Calvin Johnson and if they draft Gilmore he won't be Revis. What Kuechly is is a LB who has been a consistant force in the middle of a D since his freshman year of college. He's led the nation in tackles for 2 years which means he's always around the ball. His combine numbers were impressive, he scored in the top 6 in every single category which shows he's athletic and has the strength to shed blockers. The tape shows this as well. Give him two guys in front of him to clear the way (Dareus and K. Williams) and his tackles won't be 5 yards down field, they'll be at the LoS. Add to it he's a monster in coverage and would be an every down player and you have the makings of a very good MLB. This D is missing just two pieces in the starting lineup - a quality CB and another LB. I'll take either with the pick. I'd prefer Gilmore but I don't think he'll be there at 10. The only other option I see with the 10th pick is Floyd and I'm not comfortable with his off field problems. If he's got them fixed I think he'll be a force but if he doesn't it's a waste of a top 10 pick. Of all the guys likely to be available at 10 I think Kuechly is the safest pick other than Barron (and I don't want a S with that pick.)
-
Because CBs are more highly valued than LBs? I like Keuchly a lot but if Gilmore is there my guess is that's the Bills pick even with Keuchly still on the board.
-
Yeah, but he has short arms and there is talk of that he won't be able to handle LT in the NFL. Every time I hear Buddy talk about him it's not positive. My guess is the Bills stay away from him.
-
If it wasn't for Floyd's drinking I think there is a real discussion as to who has the better game on the field. However, given that Floyd has a big red flag the pick would be easy - Blackmon.
-
It is, sounds like everybody reads into it what the want to read into it. My take: If Kalil is available (doubtful) they'll take him. I not and Gilmore is there, he's the pick (he's my guess for the "no brainer" if available.) If Kalil and Gilmore are gone (and I think they both will be) the pick will be Kuechly. As for Floyd, I like his game a lot but with all his off the field problems I'm not sure they'll pick him at 10 - particularly without a visit. This is the type of player you NEED to visit so you can get an entire day with him and get a first hand perspective on the young man and his earnestness about turning things around. I don't think a visit for most players is necessary, but for a guy with past off field transgressions it is.

Deion says his wife beat him up
MDH replied to \GoBillsInDallas/'s topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
This is my thought as well. A guy doesn't hit two women who are attacking him and he gets made fun of but if he defends himself and hits them back he'd be called an abuser. I can't stand Sanders but I admire his restraint in this situation though I agree with a poster above - why the F is he living with his ex-wife? -
What you say is likely true in terms of who buy more jerseys. However, the Bills just redid their uniforms and purposely modelled those re-designs off of uniforms they wore in the 1970's. Keeping a design from the 1970s and just throwing on a modern collar to try and sell it isn't a great idea. I'm no designer but I understand the need to make a look uniform, make all the parts mesh into one coherent piece. These collars simply don't belong on the current design, they stand out as odd, outlandish and out of place. On a differently designed uniform, one with a more modern approach, I'm sure they'd look better but simply sticking them on a traditional design and calling it a day just reeks of trying to get more cash out of jersey sales at the expense of the uniform's look.
-
Agreed, I dislike the blue/blue and white/white combos as well. If the players would wear them the way they're supposed to the Bills have one of the best uniforms in the league.

The Bill Curtain (Williams, Williams, and Dareus)

It's the offseason. This is typically the time when being a Bills fan is the most fun.
