Bills took a look at Ryan Harris this week
4BillsintheBurgh replied to Beerball's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'd say fishing for some possible depth for next year. -
Talk about this when we have a defense that can get off the field on third down or even forces third downs regularly . For the balance of the season we have played from behind. If you want to take issue with Chan, I think the biggest issue this year has been our slow starts. We need to come in with a better script to put the pressure on the other team. I also don't think it is a coincidence that we have been playing better over the last few weeks as our young players get some game time. That is largely ignored here but I think it's directly related to the coaches and the job they're doing.

Anyone have an idea why Roosevelt is inactive?
4BillsintheBurgh replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They're trying to determine how many receivers to pick up in the offseason. -
This. Folks, Nix might be retiring (if he even does) because of the Evans deal and if the contract negotiations for players that Nix feels are worthy of extentions aren't going well. And Whaley will be right behind him because as haze stated their philosophy seems to be the same. Heck, it could be Whaley on the way out on his own accord, he would be the one attractive to other clubs. For me the indicator of front office inner workings will be the contracts that have to be negotiated before next season. Buddy is a man of his word and I have a feeling if the Bills don't get signed who he wants signed he will walk and I can't see Whaley sticking aropund much longer than that. Does anyone think it's more than a coincedence that Modrak wasn't involved with the 2011 draft and it's pretty good? The question after the 2012 draft will be how much the senior bowl helped in 2011. I believe these are the best "football guys" to be around OBD in a while, and I'm hopeful they'll all stay, because the talent of this roster is much greater than it's been in quite a while, especially on the lines. Although I will say whoever scouts OLB's for this team needs to be replaced if they haven't already. When was the last time we drafted an above average olb?

I think Bell will want to be paid like a starter, don't you? I see the bills allowing him to talk to other teams to determine market value and someone will pay him like a starter.

New Kick-Off Rule Proposed Change
4BillsintheBurgh replied to Cookiemonster's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Make the kicker start 5 yards away. -
Let me explain it - those three guys should not be playing olb in a 3-4, they should be playing de at best. We are using them there because we have no one else qualified. It's also why we have to play a hybrid, we're trying to use what we've got instead of flushing guys and starting over. I also didn't say the run defense was as bad as it was last year; it's better but not good enough yet even using heavier players. The NT is needed to anchor the line of scrimmage and let williams/dareus use their quickness to make plays. This player does not rush the passer much. The three down lineman need to force double teams, and if they're not doubled they need to get in on the run play. I'd like to see us go olb/nt/olb in the first three rounds of the draft, and if they hit on two of those guys we should be okay.
-
Have to disagree here dude. Unless you want to count Kelsey, Johnson and Carrington as olb's. I know they're playing/played in those positions, but they are not 3-4 olb's. I still think the greater need was at olb, but I am happy with Dareus. I'm also not happy with the run d and still think we could stand to add a true nt to the mix because troup doesn't look like he's getting the job done. Hopefully he will improve, but I was hoping for more production out of him by now.
-
We seem to be committed to the 3-4 per Buddy. I've watched the steelers here for a long time and even with those linebackers it doesn't work without the anchor, and a high quality anchor at that. The ends are important also, don't get me wrong but the steelers run d doesn't seem to be the same with hampton not there or not playing well. If two dline can occupy four oline, lb's can get to the ball. I agree that we need a big upgrade at olb, but I just see the nt as a bigger need. Would have been nice to see troup there already, but he's in doubt as a contributor as far as I can tell.

I am getting to be of the mind that we need the run stopping NT first. Like against the Jets, if we can't get a team in third and long, we won't need a pass rushing olb.

Positional Needs for DraftTek
4BillsintheBurgh replied to Astrobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
It's tough at this point Astro, especially not knowing who is going to get signed for 2012. According to rotoworld, pears and bell are ufa's. It would not suprise me if they did not resign bell and that decision will play a big factor in the draft of course. Assuming they sign every starter they have due, I think the needs are: P1, M3 - OLB need the pass rusher and another guy that does well in coverage; both need to play the run well P2 - NT Still need help with the run d, get a space eater P2 - WRF We need a guy that can stay healthy and help Stevie P4 - Cb Get someone to groom I still think they could grab a big back, a speedy wr, maybe a fs. I don't think a de is needed because if they can get a guy who anchors the middle I think it will be enough to help the de's we already have. I think for qb they'll bump along with Fitz and FA's for the next couple of years. It looks like one more shot at fixing the D this year then on to the O. I was hoping they were going to be playing the run better than they have this year, but that hasn't happened. Will you guys ever do a round one where there is a list of positions the team won't pick? It would be just for round 1, because when I look at the last couple drafts it seems Nix has gone with more bpa in the first and then more need in rounds 2,3,4. -
I think it's not as much luck as many think - there seems to be a concerted effort on our dline's part to get their hands (and heads) up when the qb is throwing the ball.

Can I just say one thing at this point?

Expect the Bills to draft 2 DB's next year
4BillsintheBurgh replied to Jerry Jabber's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Searcy really did go up and get that ball, Wilson was right there but didn't make the play on the ball as well as Searcy did. Hopefully Searcy is learning the defense and he'll become a keeper. -
Why is Michael Irvin still employed in television?
-
I'd have to include second year in the defense as a helper too, even though there was no offseason. Wanny may help the game planning a little bit, but without the offseason I think he won't have the effect he could have.
-
I think they'll run against 8 in the box to see if we can stop them. I didn't watch all their games last year, but you don't get to be the #1 rushing offense by not running against 8 in the box. And with us being so poor last year I'm sure KC is going to make us prove we can stop the run. If we can't they'll keep it going until we do, especially with Cassel having sore ribs. I'm assuming with our front 7 being improved we will be able to slow them down some and give our offense some better field position to work with. Hopefully we'll beat them by a score or two if we can hold onto the ball.
-
I disagree. I think KC will try to exploit the Bills run defense first until we stop them. I don't think there's any need to overthink it for them. If we stop the run then we'll see.

Are we suddently strong at LB???
4BillsintheBurgh replied to hondo in seattle's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think I will know we're strong at lb when we aren't playing a hybrid defense and Kelsay is not on the roster. I think we are one lb away, someone in the mold of Von Miller who can play olb and cover the TE. -
Is this a fair question for new registrants?
4BillsintheBurgh replied to SDS's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I was going to say what state does the team play it's home games in - but then I thought about Toronto. -
So that's an over??

A theory on Chan Gailey
4BillsintheBurgh replied to Kelly the Dog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Agree. The funny (not haha) thing is that Fred has seen so much of the come and go. I would also say you don't give FJ the chance to be a leader if the rest of the team doesn't know if the coaching staff is committed to him or not. 1a and 1b is bs too. CJ needs to take the belt away, not be given the title. Maybe there's something going on behind the scenes, but if Chan and Buddy are going to talk about production being the measuring stick, they better use it all the time with all players. Or yes, he will lose the locker room and they will not play as hard for him.
