Athletic article forecasting our cap casualties
colin replied to transplantbillsfan's topic in The Stadium Wall
so, assuming we keep morse for 1 more year, i see us ditching mongo and williams, drafting a guard who can also play C, perhaps 2 guards. i can also see wallace walking and they draft a CB in the 1st or 2nd. i feel like for whatever faults, our FO knows cbs and how to coach them up like no one's business. for next season we need a new G and CB as above, for the future we need someone who can play C. potentially for both, we need a slot WR, a TE2, and would be nice to have an RB w speed. We also need a punter but given how often we punt, i'd say any just ok guy will do. im getting ahead of myself, but i think we move some contracts around and sign chandler jones and possibly someone on O, and fill in our JAGS in the draft and maybe the odd cheap FA. the one upside of paying meh players who don't start or barely play so much is we can move money around and when their contracts are off the books the young guys behind them can fill in the spots w no drop off. looking back, mongo and williams were bad resignings. mongo was awful, and a pine rider, williams was bad at right tackle when he had to play it (vs a raw raw rookie, which is kinda shocking) and played RG decently by the end of the season, but net net is not even an average starting RG in the NFL at 10mm. odd guy, was great for the jets one year, fell apart. was great for us one year, did the same. laziness/motivation issue i bet. -

those are good questions, i'd wager 1: he wanted to win and didn't want to let his players down 2: it was a suspicion that was confirmed to him after the fact when the giants hired dabol. looking at this, and it's a lot of info coming in from a fire hose, it seems to me like the text from boomer billicheck is what put him over the top in feeling slighted. -

im kinda 50/50 on the rooney rule. it feels like a forced mandate, a wrong to correct a wrong if you will, but given that it's only interviews, it's also kinda practical and may well lead to better results. net net i think it's fine. in terms of is it a sham, or is it working, does the nfl not have many more minority coordinators than it did just a little while ago? if that's true, then i'd say it's doing the job as intended. head coaching might not be up to snuff in the representation regard, but i think you have to give it time and see how hiring goes. firing happens so often in the nfl that it's kinda hard to take a snap shot, you have to look at it over time. the next question to me is, how many minority coaches should there be? black nfl players are obviously over represented (vs pop) but is that where head coaches even come from? do they come from college coaches, general pop, etc? i think obviously it's a mix, but if the interviews are happening it's got to be a good thing for those who want more minority coaches, even if they seem like sham interviews sometimes, cuz you gotta be in it to win it/miss 100% of the shots you don't take etc. if flores has evidence of ross asking for tanking, that's a massive bombshell, and should cost ross the team, and probably create some new rules. -

poetic indeed. someone has to come up w some kind of meme about bill saying he only thought dabol got the job ahead of time due to a technical issue he had with one of his cameras in the giants facility. -

at some point you just have to admire the hubris. gives no fudges, breaks rules and doesn't care, happy to have serial killers on his team and initiate ex judicial prison on players he wants to pressure, spreads love wherever he goes. Urban might just be NFL coach of the year! -

a good hc leans on his guys, even if it makes them angry, if it's for the betterment of the team. if this is the read through (and i think it is) this is a good thing for our HC IMO. -

bro, i didn't even consider that angle. ya, this could blow up a bunch of things, no? if people cared about vices like the used to (politically speaking) then something like this would potentially have an impact on all the online gambling stuff, possibly making some states blow out of it and such. crazy -
im down on mcd right now cuz of the end of the kc game (he either called for that nonsense, or was a bit asleep at the switch and let it happen), but the last thing i want is him to be a coasting palsy guy w the coordinators who just pleases them because they have the talent and not him. a little fire and a strong stance on things is required. if frazier wants out because mcd breathes down his neck, that's the right thing. mcd has stepped in and improved the d which is a but of a slap to frazier, and im totally speculating, but i'd bet there was some kind of told you so when ford got the bench, williams got moved, and bates became the starter. if not a told you so, a bit of a "took you long enough"
-
if im getting one guy, it's jones. shorter contract, just move some wood around to make room. if i get another, i think patterson. great spark player.
-
this guy sucks! he never got anything done until he had allen. we need a real winner, like dabol. i'll see myself out.

every single thing that happened after the heroic TD w 13 on the clock was disgusting. the kick was either a coaching brain fart, or the order just didn't get through to the kicker, hard to tell which is worse. the d we lined up in was a joke, and we got slashed right away. the fact that they called TO's, and showed that line up, and then lined up in it again shows our coaches (frazier, perhaps McD, can't be certain who made it happen) just suck bad when the chips are down. the coaching staff put the players in a position to fail and got what they asked for. while there is zero chance mcd gets the boot, and it seems like a declining chance we will be rid of frazier, if we don't get to the super bowl next year (barring allen injury or the like) i suspect mcd's seat gets very warm.

on O, i think we need a TE 2 (no where near an elite need), one of OG/C/RT (brown showed a ton of ability, but still not a finished guy) and perhaps a back w some speed and moves. none of that is really elite, but it wouldn't hurt. on D, we need i think another corner (a talented rookie would do TBH) and some kind of play maker in the front 7, on the edge. that's our one elite guy need. so while i don't disagree w you, the way we have our D roster built is goofy, we have 1st and 2nd round picks (and recent ones too) and high paid guys on the bench on every play, and the fall off from them to the rest of the squad isn't that great. we are better off signing whoever or drafting guys to fill in the roster, and having a couple elite guys in the front who can make game changing plays. I think oliver can be that guy, chandler jones who we might be able to sign could be, and i think groot takes a step next season. i really think letting some guys walk (star, houghs, addison, butler, klien, mattlewitch, sanders, williams our RG) and adding one real stud and just filling in the rest will put us over talent wise, of course i've harped on enough about what we need wrt coaching.

Sean Payton on the end of the Bills-Chiefs game
colin replied to dave mcbride's topic in The Stadium Wall
this is it, our d coaches (gotta include the HC in this, not sure how involved he is day to day but it all stops at him) get the guys fired up and running what they build for them, but it comes at the expense of not having anything to fall back on or change up whit the fit hits the shan. we miss a ton of tackles because guys are in position to make a lot of tackles, i can live w that. we rush a generally fresh 4 and don't get a lot of sacks because we try to rush as a team and impact passes more than finish the qb off, to an extent i can live with that. our LBs are out of position sometimes because they have so much to do and it's such a hard job, i can sorta live with that. what i can't live with is being easy to predict and slow to change. the dvoa stats are crap because it's not over a large enough sample set, and the variability is too high (we placed the coprses of back ups padding our stats, and we got trucked like ever fan expected way too often). a couple better play makers would help, but we have a schematic issue where we don't put enough of a challenge up against good Os, and we simply don't adjust at all. im optimistic, i think one new guy in the front 7 who can play at a high level (letting our old wood walk too, they can be replaced by lots of people. remember when zimmer was an upgrade to butler last season?) and either a new DC or McD taking over the D (assuming he can, i'll presume he's got enough more smarts than frazier to fix it) and we have the d we need. -
bills at rams to open the season would be electric. a big time show of force to put the taste out of our mouths.
-
i expect the rams to win a fairly convincing game. cincy has played some outstanding ball, but they don't have the run game nor the super stars up front on d to frustrate the rams like sf does (sf had a huge win streak vs the rams too, just came up short yesterday).

Brian Daboll hired to be Head Coach of NY Giants
colin replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
i live in central nj and see some giant games, and have a lot of gman fan friends. i think their d was pretty good all things considered, and they came out to play when hope was slim, so it makes sense to keep their dc. i wish dabol well since even tho i poo poo'd him a lot, he did obviously work really hard for us. i don't think he's gonna have success though, he's an offensive experimentation guy, i don't think he's meticulous enough to be an effective hc and the microscope in NY/NJ is gonna burn him. -
Mahomes was off, but kc got production out of their lbs, and out of their Des. Our over paid dl except Oliver did Jack squat, and out lbs were watching the game most of the time. We have too many over paid jags (Addison, Houghs, star, Klein for example) and we need one playmaker in the front 7. All of that said, the end it was coaching. If our coaches were capable of adjusting, or just not calling an idiotic d w 13 seconds left we are talking about how we just boat raced cinci all the way home
-
Lotta anti clutch football at qb today.
-
The Bengals opted to be the 4th seed. They snuck wins over tenn and KC, they had an adjustment for the second half. Our coaching staff intentionally doesn't have defensive adjustments. It's pretty clear what we are lacking

$2.8M Bills Cap Space (after signing Reserve/Futures)
colin replied to ColoradoBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
we have so many guys on this team who barely play better than 1st and 2nd year players i see all over the place. given that our wins were all 12+ points, and we lost every single close game, i don't think changing these dudes would be a huge problem. our D balled out statistically this season, was pretty awful last season. zero difference in results, we lost to the same team. it was closer this season, but no thanks to our D, it was cuz allen just gets better and our 2nd year wr stepped up, our 3rd year rb stepped up, and a back up LG and a raw rookie RT improved 3 spots on our OL (since williams kicked inside to RG, where he is decidedly average but paid like an all pro) -

prolly not, but we can tread water w our jags w some restructurings and letting dead wood walk and make just enough room for a chandler, and basically hope to win in the draft. I think that's how you win the chip next season. we don't pay our guys any less in meaningful terms than KC or the rams do, but they have play makers all over and we simply have allen balling out of control and a bunch of like better jags. i'd rather draft a stud, but that's less likely than moving around money for jones imo -

true, we need more positions to be filled by young players drafted in the past and next two drafts to replace guys. the addisons and butlers and williams and houghs and kliens and mattlewitch's and sanders of this team must all be let go. we see rookie cbs come in for injured starters and 3rd string olinemen play at a meh level all over the nfl. they would be worse than the above guys, but not glaringly so, and we just got smoked by the same 3 friggen super stars who nuked us 2 times last year and once this year. in the modern nfl, play makers and jags are what make up a championship team, and we have the biggest play maker in the nfl for a long time. we just have to make sure we have a couple other play makers (really, i think if we come out of the offseason w a legit pass rusher we are golden) and not spend too much on jags. -
i still can't decide if i think it was all on mcd, who simply thought kc was out of timeouts, or on frazier, who isn't the sharpest tool in the drawer and thinks having a back up plan is a bad idea, is who is most responsible for this horrible display. i suppose it is possible that jonny details, our head coach, got so lost in the details he couldn't see the full picture and decided to call a guaranteed FG allowing d to stop a potential TD, but even after this abortion of an ending i think that's just too much.

$2.8M Bills Cap Space (after signing Reserve/Futures)
colin replied to ColoradoBills's topic in The Stadium Wall
i think we save some money by having fewer DL men on the roster, one of the highest paid positions in the NFL. i think we need to drop some bank on chandler jones tho. Morse maybe retire, williams can be let go and replaced by a rookie (a real OG who can play better year 1 is doable imo). restructures could move some money around and the dead money fall off in 2023 from star and other guys will come back. bottom line, we can let some of our over paid jags walk, and we will have to replace a couple starters kinda cheap in order to poney up for a pass rusher. we pay a lot of guys who don't make much contribution, which lets us move some money around now as we get a bit of a release in 2023 -
we do need more speed, but perhaps mckenzie can be that speed. a fast back would be nice, but way less important. a TE2 is a bigger need, and we still need at least one interior lineman. an OG who can play C would be perf.
