I fully expect that this is Mike McDaniel's last season. That's assuming he makes it through the season. I sort of doubt he does. Let's hope Steven Ross maintains his propensity to hire losers.

When McDermott came to Buffalo, he brought a notebook filled with everything he could put in it about how to be a head coach. He used that as a manual to guide his actions. Following that meant that his approach to coaching was a bit mechanical at first. Having done it for a number of years now, I expect he has chucked the notebook now. He has established a routine and is now free to experiment a bit and even follow his feelings at times because he has his routine and the trust of his bosses.

You sure you don't want to see him play tight end? With that wing span, he would be really tough to cover in contested catch situations.

For all you McDermott haters, who would you want? (Now a poll)
BigAl2526 replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
I am not a McDermott hater, but I responded to the poll anyway. I answered, "someone not on the list." I could have answered Sean McVay or Kyle Shanahan, but I figured they are not realistic choices. No way would their current teams ever consider trading them. I don't think Babich or Brady are ready to make the jump. I can't bring myself to want Belichick. He's also got his age against him. While occasionally a coaching change results in quick success, more frequently it takes some time as coaches often institute scheme and philosophy changes that take a while. Bill Belichick is one month to the day younger than me. No thanks. Jon Gruden is smart and he's brash. Both are actually good qualities for a head coach, but I think he's also a little erratic, and that's not a great quality for a head coach. Mike McCarthy is a hard "No!" I think he's too tied to the "good old boy" network.. I don't think he's especially creative and he is a West Coast guy. I don't think there is a good reason to put Josh Allen through a scheme change. If the Bills were to make a coaching change in the foreseeable, I think the way to go is to hire a smart, young, successful coordinator rather than recycle somebody form the past. -
I wouldn't say I'm panicked. I think the loss sent a message to the players-that they can't take the playoffs for granted. Injuries are going to happen. There is not a great deal teams can do to prevent them, beyond making sure they have a good training staff. Too many players had a sloppy game against the Patriots. There were way more penalties than what one might consider acceptable. It wasn't all due to officiating. Several skill players on offense were careless with ball possession. The coaches don't escape blame either. Brady seemed to fail to take Patriot weaknesses and vulnerabilities into account in his game planning. More than one observer has said that in the first half it was like he was throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what would stick. Babich gets a bit of a pass because of all the injuries on defense, but injuries happen and it is his responsibility to deal with them.

McDaniel on very thin ice with Dolphins owner
BigAl2526 replied to Gregg's topic in The Stadium Wall
It would be shocking if he survives. He's had long enough to turn things around in Miami. He's a clever offensive mind and not much more. -
I saw a really ticky tack holding call on Conner McGovern. As I noted in another thread, I thought Davis held Coleman during the pass play where Josh Allen overthrew a desperation pass at the end of the game that was just out of reach for Coleman in the end zone not defensive pass interference at the catch point).
-
On the desperation pass play where Josh threw the ball a bit too deep in the end zone to be caught, it was probably not defensive pass interference. However, earlier in the route, I thought Davis held and interfered with the route running of Coleman.

And stop the other team from matriculating down the field. -
Ugh! Dane Jackson is the only CB on the PS. At least he's experienced and knows the system. The Patriots aren't loaded with high end talent at receiver, so that's something. Diggs and Boutte both know what they're doing though. I don't imagine there are any great CBs out there in free agency five weeks into the season. Not going to help tomorrow, but it looks like Kendall Fuller is still available. He was lousy last year, but was dealing with a lot of injuries. Maybe he's got something left in the tank at 30 years of age.

I hope you're right.

Josh Allen is a weapon who is always going to impact defensive strategy. Brady understands that and takes advantage. I won't fault him for that. I do complain a bit when he runs the identical running play 3 and 4 times consecutively. Teams are starting to anticipate that and are stopping the plays cold. What I'd like to see is the Bills running the same play a couple times, then fake the same play and do something different. That should keep defenses more off balance.

Who's to say what Maye's ceiling is? He's not Josh Allen's equal right now. Allen has proven himself in big time games. This year, the Bills have scored 30 or more points in four straight games. In New England's 2 losses, they scored a total of 3 touchdowns and 27 points. Their wins were against Miami and Carolina. Maye has not proven much beyond the notion that he is a bonified NFL QB. I won't argue that he isn't.

I’m sure there’s other opposing players who “hate” JA too

I think it's "meatheads."

Sauce Gardner is crying, but does he have a point?
BigAl2526 replied to Draconator's topic in The Stadium Wall
This is kind of what I was thinking. He is a very "handsy" cornerback. Maybe the league is having officials call it a little more closely. -
Could you be a bit more explicit? The new stuff - is it common stuff done elsewhere that the Bills just haven't done much of or is Babich really getting creative? How do you know this? Are you doing film analysis yourself or reading it somewhere?

Can he hold for the place kicker?

If Only They Could Tackle..It's Not Just the Coaching

Whiffs all over the place yesterday. I assume the players will be seeing a lot of film that makes them groan. Hopefully, they can fix it. -
THE ROCKPILE REVIEW – At the One-Quarter Mark
BigAl2526 replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall
You'll have to wait until 9 PM or so on Sunday evening for the 1/4 mark, Shaw. LOL. In any case, I'm pretty happy with the way things have gone. No losses, but the Bills have areas where they can (and need to) improve. The problem with playing perfectly is it seems too much like a peak from which you will have to descend, probably sooner rather than later. When there are still issues you have to fix, you can focus on getting better and not just holding on. -
The connection between place kicker and holder is the biggest issue with changing punters, but Prater adjusted pretty quickly when he came in on short notice to replace Bass. I think the Bills will be OK with a new punter having 3 days to practice.
