Allow me to add some perspective here: Mahomes didn't play 4 quarters of that game. He played the first half, and a some of the third quarter. He had no passing TD but had made several great throws for big chunks and they were running the ball in. They had built a 2 TD lead by midway through the 3rd and Mahomes went to the bench so that Tyler Bray (third string QB) could get reps. Bray went out and turned the ball over twice leading the Broncos to tie the game back up. Mahomes came off the bench with 2:30 left and led the game winning drive again. And........(see next comment) .......while Talib, Harris and Miller all saw season low snap counts, those snaps came while Mahomes was playing. Also keep in mind KC starter snap counts in this game. Hunt - 1. ......and that's it. Kelce, almost the entire O-line and all the WR were backups for the WHOLE game. If you watch highlights of Mahomes from that game...you will see him making incredible plays with Miller chasing him and Talib covering.... While this was a "meaningless" game....the context matters.

It was only one year....but a historic, league MVP year at the most important position in the game. It's the offseason and not much going on and it's 4 AM and I am at work doing nothing....so I forgive me if I couldn't resist to troll a little here... Come on.....in the history of the NFL, no one would ever trade a 23 year old league MVP at QB coming off a historic season, for any combo of players ever. I understand the circumstances of how the Mahomes trade went down....given that Buffalo was NOT taking a QB in the 2017 draft under any circumstances...then trading out was a fine thing to do. The mistake wasn't with McDermott...and Beane wasn't around....the owners (pegulas) awkward hiring of coach, then having lame duck GM...then later hiring GM after draft...all but assured that there would be no QB taken. McDermott simply wasn't in a position to make a well informed committment to ANY of them at the time of the 2017 draft. So again...GIVEN that the Bills were not in the QB market in 2017 due to circumstances created by the team owners...McD did VERY WELL. But that's like saying the Edmonton Oilers did VERY WELL when they traded Wayne Gretzky. You can't "win" that trade. At best, you could say the Oilers didn't completely lose the trade...they did go on to win a cup in 1990 without Gretzky.....it's similar in this case. Buffalo can not "win" the Mahomes trade...but it is entirely possible that they didn't lose it if Allen works out...the other bits...Tre White and Edmunds look good so far...but no executive ever, would trade Mahomes for Allen, Edmunds and White....you could even throw in the next 10 Bills round 1 picks with those guys and no one makes that trade. It all hinges of course on Allen...if he becomes a top 10 NFL QB....along with the other guys in the trade...you will have done well and not lost the trade.

He probalby didn't have much freedom to audible, but there is plenty of film where you can tell Allen has deliberately passed up an open, short, designed route, to throw downfield to a target that isn't open etc. I think Baldinger did a film breakdown (it may have been someone else) showing Allen doing this on many occasions and more often than not, resulting in a negative play. I don't care how you want to break it down...or what word you want to use...I like to use the term passing efficiency because it implies the entire team as the passing game....Allen (and the team) aren't going to win much if they aren't more efficient when passing....and that probably has more to do with Allen than the other parts.....can't wait to see how he does with the better roster and the whole offseason of coaching etc.
-
......Let's assume that Allen did in fact play with a bad O-line and bad WR last season (wich I am good with...that seems like a reasonable assumption) WHY would Allen decide on purpose to do the LEAST optimal thing he can do under those circumstances? A bad line would mean poor protection to allow time for downfield plays to develope and those would supposedly develop less often and more slowly with bad WR. The optimal thing to do under these circumstance would be designed plays/audibles, RPO action etc that would happen quickly and a read made more quickly to a shorter, faster develping route to mitigate the bad Oline and bad WR. Either the coaches called bad plays for Allen to try and throw deeper...OR they called good plays and Allen made bad choices. One of those had to have happened.

Jets trade Darron Lee to Chiefs
Zerovoltz replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I'll show up to eat crow if it comes to it. Good point about Jets being div rival..but you'd think if they hate Lee enough let him go for peanuts...they might WISH he was on the Bills. -

It's possible I'll get struck by lightning during my date with scarlett johansen...but not likely. Same applies to the question of which team will be picking lower/higher in the draft. -

KC had A TON of roster turnover on D this offseason. Our D has sucked and they blew it up. In doing so, the one area that got kind of left out is the LB position. KC has Anthony Hitchens, who they were talking about moving to the weakside (where he DOES NOT BELONG), Ragland in the middle....(The Ragland experiment hasn't worked. He can't cover, and maybe he'd be a decent thumber in an all down hill role, but last season the KC d asked the LB to diagnose, then move. ALL our LB struggled with this to be fair) And then Dorrien O Daniel....a 4th round tweener type we drafted out of Clemson last year...who looked promising when he did play. We signed a scrub/cast away from Dallas that also plays WLB named something Wilson....truly an afterthought JAG type...and we didn't draft one. It is BY FAR the shallowest positon grouping of the KC defense. a 6th Rounder for Lee, who may fit better AND allow Hitchens to be the MLB (where he belongs) is actually a big deal for KC...cost pennies to add this guy who is supposedly good in coverage and will play a postion he's more suited to play. If the Jets to a 6th from KC, they would have taken a 6th from the Bills...no offesne...but the Bills 6th is going to be a better pick than KC's sixth...wich will be a late 6th. Also....I've said it a few other places here, but Ragland has not worked out. The injury maybe or the crap scheme...both combined...he's looked slow AND lost...a great combo. If he can't win the starting MLB job...he is of no use for us and will likely be released. Good on Beane to get that 4 out of us.(KC) -
Expectations for Josh Allen this year
Zerovoltz replied to Hapless Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I've long been and Allen critic...but I am really looking forward to seeing what he does with an overhauled roster and another year of experience etc...He's a fun player to watch and the physical gifts definitely show up on the field. I'm rooting for him. Whatever your definition of accuracy is...however you want to quantify that....Allen and the Bills need to make strides in passing efficiency....I'm looking forward to it. I'd like to eat a little tasty crow about Allen. -
Successful season...what will it take?

QB A threw for 21 TD, 11 INTS and 4299 Yards 66.0 Comp % in 2018 His team went 5-11. QB B threw for 21 TD, 11 INTS and 3777 Yards in 2018 66.1 Comp % His team went 5-11 also. The combined QB's for the team with the 5th best D threw for 15 TD, 13 INTS, 3431 Yards and 61.4 Comp %. They also went 5-11. Teams threw for 20 or fewer TD had a combined record of 54-90. QB A was Eli Manning, B was Matt Stafford and last was the combined efforts of the Jaguars QBs. You could argue Buffalo has a better D than the Giants and the Lions...Jacksonville finished 5th in overall D.... If you add in teams that threw for 25 or fewer TD, that gets you 2 more losing teams, plus the Cowboys. The lowest QUALIFYING (meaning, he had enough pass attempts to count) QB completion PCT to make the playoffs was Jared Goff, who completed 64.9 pct of his passes. If you take non qualifiers, then you can throw in Jackson who only completed 58.2 pct of his throws in the 7 games he played, going 6-1 helping baltimore to qualify for the playoffs. Allen needs to show substantial improvement.....I don't care how many times people want to define accuracy, etc...the bottom line is...in todays game, your QB and targets need to connect at minimum, 60% of the time...and realistically that number needs to higher to be considered a real threat. Allen doesn't need to get to 60 this year....but he can't be at 53 again....that needs to be 57, 58 or better this year to show that he is growing and improving toward being the elite QB everyone his hoping for. if he hits 60, no matter what the record is...I'd consider that wildly successful and I'd be pumped for 2020 in that case. -

Big Ben threw for 30 something TD and 5000 yards and Pittsburg did not make the playoffs. -
Successful season...what will it take?
Zerovoltz replied to LabattBlue's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I think one or maybe two people hit on it kind of....the record and playoffs are simply side shows this year....if you win games and make the playoffs...that would of course be great....but if you go 8-8 with a wild card berth and Josh Allen completed 56% of his passes while throwing for 14 TD and 12 INTS...you get crushed in the wild card game...that is a failed season. 5-11 but Allen gets that comp % up to 58-60 or better, 20 or more TD with 12 or fewer INTS..that would be progress and something to continue to build on....it would be better than the 1st scenario making the playoffs. You need to know by the end of next season what you have in Allen. The bills have gotten out of cap hell, they've turned the roster over and they have aquired some actual pieces and parts to go around Allen....and you had what I and many others would say was a very very good draft. The 2019 Season is ALL ABOUT ALLEN. Period. I won't be looking at W/L record when I watch the Bills this year...I am watching Allen...I want to see the progress. -
Wentz completed 63% of his passes as a rookie and threw for more TD than INTs with an average group of recievers. I’m pretty sure they knew what they had and went out and got him Alshon Jeffrey etc. Wentz recievers, who he completed 63% to were Zack Etta (good) Jordan Mathews (not good) Darren Sproles (very old) Trey Burton and Nelson Agahlor.

yeah....my mock was awful...I said when I posted it that it would be. My draft analysis in general was decent. Predicting the NFL draft is a fools errand.

Not bad, turned out pretty good. Worst call wa point 5. Gettleman pulled an all time gaff at 6 and I had been right about the Redskins not going QB until he overruled his football people and took Haskins. Grier we to Carolina. i had called Hockenson to the Bills but he was gone at 8 so it became super obvious that Oliver was the pick. A ton of WR went in round two as I predicted. Not a lot of trades high.

Dee Ford Played 1022 Snaps in 2018. Clark played 728 Defensive snaps in 2018. Both had 13 Sacks. One of them needed over 300 more snaps to get there....Ford also is a liablility against the run. Ford has been mostly unhealthy during his time in the NFL. Clark has played in 62/64 games. I love draft time.....EVERYONE IS GOOD until you draft them....you say this as if Byron Murphy would be both good and available at 29. go look at the last 10 drafts and tell me what a surefire hit Murphy is at 29....there are a TON of great players like Corderelle Paterson, and Gabe Carrimi or maybe that household name Kyle Wilson, or Dominque Easley. ....we could miss out on a talent like ....Phillip Dorsett! ....at this point...I'll gladly give up the 29th pick and a 2020 2nd for a proven player.

Eh....dont' feel bad about anything.....there are plenty of times when I post here and it's not exactly the kind of stuff that would endear me to anyone around here. Some of my early Mahomes stuff was borderline douchebaggery. The folks here have won me over....rooting for the Bills anytime they aren't playing KC. Even went on NFLshop.com a few days ago and bought a Bills jersey for my 10 year old. (admittedly, it is an EJ Manual jersey, but a Nike Jersey for 8 bucks brand new is hard to beat.)

I occaisionally post at Jetsnation.com but not very often at all. I very frequently post on Orangemane.com ...a Broncos fansite... I am heavily involved over there...play in a couple of their fantasy leauges...and I troll them HARD. I came here after the Mahomes trade to kind of see how things would go on this side of the trade....and I've ended up liking it here...good group....lots of high quality posters here. I've kind of adopted the Bills as something of a second team....really enjoy watching you guys....and even though my mind says no...I am rooting for Josh Allen...I like him. He's fun to watch...he IS athletic and compelling. Also....before it comes up for the millionth time. I am not Jeffismagic.

Again...adding to keep all my draft prognostications in one spot. Todays thought. the Raiders aren't going to do anything special at 4. Why announce it? What the Raiders really want is to draw any team interested in Haskins, into a deal up to 2 or 3 ahead of them...Haskins goes off the board, and that gives the Raiders one more of the elite defenders to choose from....quite possibly They are looking at Quinnen Williams...and to get the Niners off of him....they need someone to come up for Haskins. It won't work. No one is coming up. Niners take williams. Jets go with Oliver. The Raiders take Josh Allen...the pass rusher Josh Allen. ....and my Mock already gets one demerit for KC trading out of round 1 in the Frank Clark deal. I'm also not feeling good about having Montez Sweat at 5......that may end up looking really bad.

Probably the most overlooked aspect of this is health. You ponited out we let Houston and Ford go....I think you got the money part wrong. Houston would have cost 21 Million this year, and Ford on a Franchise tag would have been 15. That's 36 Million. Anyhow...Ford, Houston (and Eric Berry) have been WAY too unavailable the last few years. Nothing is guarnateed....Clark could get hurt...but given that Ford and Houston have often been Hurt and Clark hasn't been...is a big factor in all this. I can't stress this enough either...to move up from 29 to say 21 for example, and select Clelin Ferrel..would COST MORE in draft compensation than the trade for proven Clark just did. KC is in a win now mode. I see some have suggested that we might be missing out on a good safety or corner at 29......well...of course we COULD be...but frankly, the probability of hitting that isn't very high..especially that far down...At this time in the roster development of Kc....this was the right move. One more VERY IMPORTANT distinction being missed here... KC had BY FAR the most pass attempts against. KC tied pittsburg for most sacks in the NFL with 52 each. The thing no one mentions is that Pittsburg got to 52 in FAR FAR fewer opertunities than KC did....in fact, when you look at Sacks per pass attempt, KC was VERY AVERAGE. If team A gets to rush the passer 1000 times, and team B only got to rush the passer 500 times...and both end up with 50 sacks..Team B was the better pass rushing team. Surface stats for Ford and KC's pass rush in general would lead you to believe that the pass rush was elite....it was good..but not elite. KC's run defense was putrid. Dee Ford is a putrid run defender....KC is trying to improve the run defense while maintaining a threatening pass rush...this move was made with that in mind.

I cant say if this is the right deal, but I do understand what they are doing here. It’s importantvto note that Clark has been healthy and reliable over the course of his time in the NFL. Ford has not been. Had the one really good year in a contract year. Also, it’s always worth asking, take last years pick 29 and a random late 20s 2nd and find a combo that equals Frank Clark. It’s hard to do.
-
1. Sad to say, 85% of Chiefs fans dont understand the cap and also way over value draft choices. Ok. Some of you here have correctly identified that KC is taking advantage of Mahomes rookie deal. This is exactly what you do when you have a franchise QB playing for pennies. The compensation is this years 1st and one of our 2020 2nds. that equates to about pick 24 in terms of trade chart value. highly unlikely KC could move up to 24 and get a Frank Clark caliber player. The compensation is high, but again, what good is cap space due to the rookie QBs deal unless you use it? last thought, Dee Ford had exactly one good season. He’s often hurt and he is awful.....dreadfully awful against the run. KC has changed schemes and this is a better fit. Besides being a very good pass rusher, Clark is a very good run defender and edge setter. Dee Ford simply isn’t that guy. Ford is really good at what he does, and has value but Clark is better. Seattle, conversely with Wilson now being highly paid, has to build with cheap talent in the draft. When Mahomes gets paid, KC will be in same boat.

I don't think that is the lesson. Under the circumstances....when you have a lame duck GM....and a new HC only on the job a short time prior to the draft...you probably don't have the best organized draft board....BUT forget that for a moment...they traded out of 10 because the powers that be drafting weren't sold on what was there at 10 anymore than they were sold on what was at 27. That is a GREAT time to trade out....and given that you got Tre White....who was as good as Lattimore means you had made the right choice as far as knowing you could get equal talent later AND add some draft capital. More is actually made of this than need be...the lesson that needed to be learned was by Mr. Pegula....and that was don't stumble and staggar your way through a firing/hiring cycle like he did. I think he probably learned that lesson. Going and getting Josh Allen also showed the team, once the whole staff was together and on the same page...was all about addressing the QB situation because the 2018 draft and events/trades leading to it...were all about fixing your QB spot. If Mahomes was just an average guy....or even just a good QB in the top 10...NO ONE would ever bring this up...and if they did, it would be to heap praise on McD (and maybe Whaley) for astutely getting extra picks AND identifiying a great DB at pick 27. If you have identified a talent that you can't get later, when you have a top 10 pick...you keep the pick and select that player....if you have identified players outside the top 10, top 20...and you can get trade out and get them while adding draft capital....you do that.
