  1. Twitter could face a $250 million FTC fine for using phone numbers to target ads Twitter disclosed in a regulatory filing that it could face a fine of up to $250 million from US authorities over its use of phone numbers and email addresses to target advertisements. The company received a complaint from the Federal Trade Commission on July 28 alleging it had used data "provided for safety and security purposes for targeted advertising during periods between 2013 and 2019," it said in the filing. Twitter estimates the complaint could result in a loss of between $150 million and $250 million, it said. The social media company admitted last October that it had "inadvertently" targeted ads at users through contact details that they provided for security purposes. Twitter (TWTR) users are asked to provide information like their phone number to help secure their account through services such as two-factor authentication. </snip>
  2. Mmmmm ?❤️ ? Dwayne Johnson... ❤️ Now, what was this thread about?
  3. Some positive news: ISM Manufacturing Index (PMI) Beats Forecast in July, Continuing Expansion Cycle The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) Manufacturing Index (PMI) came in stronger than expected at 54.2% in July, up from 52.6% in June. This reading indicates an overall expansion in the economy for the third straight month after one month of contraction due to disruptive efforts to mitigate the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). </snip> The reading also indicates manufacturing sector growth continued for the second straight month after three prior months of COVID-19-related disruptions. </snip> Demand is growing as is evident by the strong gain in the New Orders Index at 61.5%. That represents an increase of 5.1 from the June reading of 56.4%. New orders are being supported by the New Export Orders Index re-entering expansion. The ISM Manufacturing Index (PMI) has now exceeded pre-pandemic levels. It hasn’t been as high since April 2019. The rate of increase for the PMI is a level not seen since August 1980. </snip>
  4. Q1 forecast an annual decrease of 4.8%, Q2 an annual rate of 32.9%. These are not what happened in that particular quarter. It gets very skewed because they are annualizing the rate based upon a quarterly rate (well, plus some compounding). Now, is the Q2 number good? Hell no. But it is not -32.9% in the quarter (as was tweeted) and we are unlikely to see that rate for a whole year (an annual). California alone being fully open would help tremendously... which means it ain't gonna happen until November 4th.
  5. You do know that that is not actually true. If they want to keep their 230 status, they need to abide by 230 law. Now, they can do whatever they like if they decide to go full publisher (which they seem to be doing), but if they want to be a platform with that awesome immunity, they do need to abide by 230. I am not certain how an attorney who is representing a client that has settled with CNN and WaPo for the client's defamation is spreading "outright lies" and "fake cures." Either they settled, or they did not (hint: they did).
  6. Who knows if it will continue, or if the ratings will come back. Details on NBA return ratings And the only league that pretty much remained out of politics goes with this:
  7. The masks stuff is stupid. Not only can a virus get though a mask or bandana, but think how many times people touch their face exponentially who never touched their face before, when wearing a mask. And what about those eyeballs? Fauci jumped the shark with goggle advice (for the average person), although if you want to wear a mask and believe it is a good deterrent, the goggles to cover your eyes probably are a good idea. Washing your hands is probably better advice. I do worry about all the hand washing and purelling, etc leading to weaker immune systems, but maybe in the short term is will not matter? Anyhoooo viruses gonna virus.
  8. Pompeo on China. I started it where he starts talking about DiFi.
  9. I do not think it is surprising, at all. Oh, I see that is an old piece to inform people about the ties/connections. And Brookings still went on its merry way.
