Yeah, the cap wasn’t an issue with Mack. That would have worked fine. Davis has just tied up so much cash that he couldn’t afford to put the money into an annuity. He has the Carr money in an annuity and I’m assuming (but not positive) that coaches’ salaries work the same way. He can’t just say, “I’ll pay you ____.” It is held on the front end.
-
It’s the actual dollars. I’m not sure that coaches’ salaries work the same as players but the guaranteed portion of contracts are put into an annuity (as I understand it). Mark Davis didn’t have the additional $75M sitting around to put in the annuity for Mack (or whatever it was). He is cash poor until Vegas. Now, I would think that he could have gotten a loan to do it but that’s the way that I heard the story.

Oh I agree. All that I am saying is that what other franchise signs a QB to that type of deal to move on a year later? The Carr contract and the Gruden contract are what prevented them from signing Mack. The guaranteed money goes into an annuity upon signing the deal and Mark Davis was too cash poor to retain Mack. He made a stupid decision to give an average QB that kind of money and an even stupider decision to do the sameness with Gruden.

The Tasom Hill Effect
Kirby Jackson replied to Buffalo Barbarian's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Lamar Jackson is a QB. That’s different IMO. He can run a lot but throws well. That’s why he went in the first. These other guys are more “gadget” players. They CAN play QB but can also play all over. Jackson has done some of it this year but his long-term plan is QB. They won’t expose him to the collisions on a coverage team. Taysom, to me, is a fast Tim Tebow (with a genius coach). -
Ed Oliver won't be a Buffalo Bill

College players that are surefire first rounders sit out all of the time. Nick Bosa left school earlier this year to prepare for the draft instead of rehabbing his injury to get back. Christian McCaffrey and Leonard Fournette did the exact same thing. That isn’t rare at all. -

By comparison Trace McSorley is 205 lbs soaking wet. Some of these running QBs are more slot receiver than Hill. Taysom runs that zone read down hill. He plays on coverage units. That’s in addition to the rest of his role (punt returns, Rb, wr, QB). Those other guys can do some of what Taysom does but not all of it. -

Agree with all of those guys. Lamar started to show it today. Taysom is different than the rest of them though because he is huge. I think that a bunch of these mobile QBs have a role as a Swiss Army knife moving forward. It is a copycat league and teams will try to emulate it. -

I can say this, he’s a GOD in New Orleans. They LOVE him. He is a weird, special, alien. I think that his role is a growing one around the league. He’s a guy that can create matchup issues because you never know where he will line up. Every team would love a Taysom Hill but not every team has him (or Sean Payton). -

Ed Oliver won't be a Buffalo Bill

Re-watch it, he started to take off the coat. That’s a terrible look. He should have pulled him aside and talked about (assuming that he cared enough about the stupid rule). Otherwise he should have let it go and addressed it after the game. The only thing that could happen was bad with the way that the “adult” handled it. We are roughly the same age (I’m 37) so I’m not sure it’s generational. I just think that people see this thing differently. For me, neither was right in their reaction but I put 85% on Applewhite. He started it AND it was petty and ridiculous. -

He tried to physically remove the coat!! That’s what started it. I don’t consider that a “higher standard.” That was the worst possible response. He will walk away now. He wasn’t going to play in the bowl game anyways. Applewhite is WAY more replaceable than Oliver. He is their 1st ever 5-star recruit and will be a top 10 pick. That helps programs just like Mack helped UB. -

I don’t think we are in agreement. I hold the adult making $1.5M to a higher standard than the 20 year-old. The rule is stupid and without any reason. There are PLENTY of coats to go around. I’m sure Oliver even has one. Applewhite is butthurt that Oliver isn’t playing and protecting his draft status. That’s what anyone with sense would do. Applewhite should be the adult in the situation. There is no reason for a rule to try to “show who is in charge.” This incident won’t impact Oliver’s future. It certainly puts a negative spotlight on Applewhite though. -

He should just withdraw now and it looks better for everyone. That’s what top 10 picks do (especially on average teams). -

If the rule had a purpose then we could all agree. Having a rule for the sake of having a rule is ridiculous. Why not have a rule “everyone stand on your left foot the whole time?” Applewhite can walk over and discipline guys that are standing on both feet because “it’s a rule.” They are a major Division 1 football program. If they can afford to pay Major Applewhite $1.5M to coach this year they can afford enough coats for the players. -

I said it elsewhere but it is a way worse look for Applewhite. He came across as a petulant child. He was like a referee on a power trip. He confronted the best player in program history because he was wearing a coat!! He was trying to flex his muscle and came across looking ridiculous. He physically tried to remove a coat!! Applewhite should be embracing Oliver not trying to show who has more power. Oliver can easily say “I’m good” and never put on a Houston uniform again. He still goes early in the 1st and this issue has ZERO lasting impact on him. It’s a much bigger issue that an average college coach pushes away an All-American. -
Oh, I’d bet anything that White gets offered a BIG 2nd contract by the Bills. These guys want to develop there own guys and grow with them. Tre may very well be the best CB in football this year. They aren’t just going to let that guy walk out the door.
-
That’s not too far from where I am. Saffold, James and Tyrell Williams would be my ideal FA start. I’d be tempted to swing at Eiffert knowing that he is never healthy. I think all of that is relatively realistic. They need to let the draft come to them.

Bandit, I’m curious to hear your initial thoughts on the 2019 offseason and the Bills? I don’t want to put you on the spot but your thoughts are valued.

2019 Mock Drafts and top prospects
Kirby Jackson replied to thunderingsquid's topic in College Football
This situation looks WAY worse for Applewhite IMO. It’s a really, really stupid rule. He went all the way to taking the coat off the guy in the ultimate power struggle!! He looked like an umpire or referee that tries to flex his power. He was Joey Crawford. -
He is a full grown man. He has also been at his best in their biggest games (at least from the little that I know about him). He is 6’6” and 225 lbs. He runs and sub-4.5 40 and is averaging almost 23 yards per catch!! That’s pretty crazy. I wouldn’t hate him at all.
