I am biased because I live in Houston but it makes no sense to me that the NHL hasn't pursued a team in Houston. Its the 4th biggest city in the country, we have an arena with ice (Toyota Center), and Houston had an IHL/AHL team that routinely led the league in attendance. There are a lot of Canadian transplants here as well as a massive contingent of Americans who have relocated from traditional hockey markets. Houston has the second most Fortune 500 companies of any city in the country and can easily sell luxury suites/boxes. From what I have read, Bettman doesn't want a hockey team sharing space with the basketball team even though that is a situation in so many other cities. It impacted where people live and how they live. It shaped American culture. Outside of the old cities like New York, Boston, Chicago, and to a lesser extent Philadelphia/DC every American city was built for cars. Urban sprawl and suburban mediocrity are simply not possible without the automobile. The number one priority of city designers is "where are all the cars going to park?"

For as much as the players "loved" Donny the cleanout interviews have been pretty damning. "Lack of accountability", "guys should have lost playing time", "lack of structure" is coming from everyone. I wonder how much of it is directed at Skinner given two of his linemates are harping on this theme. The players say they want accountability but we will see how much they like it.

I would argue that the invention of inventions was pretty impactful. The invention came about in 1793 just in time for Eli Whitney to popularize inventions with the cotton gin. Before Eli Whitney there was no true innovation, only recycling of and incremental improvement on existing ideas. The invention would stagnate however, mostly due to the spectacular failure that was the steamboat which sucked most of the joy out of inventing. And for a long time nothing really happened. That is, until, the invention of technology in 1903. Technology was invented by the Swedes and was primarily focused on the design of modular furniture until a string a futuristic movies including Back to the Future, The Terminator, and ET the Extra Terrestrial, captivated imaginations worldwide. For the first time in human history people began wondering "can technology be used to improve my everyday life?"...and the rest is history. Without the invention of inventions, most of this would not have been possible.

I bet Allen feels like a guy who just took a dump the size of a lunchbox that pinched off clean in a one wipe situation, precautionary at that.
