Now Rodgers can sign with the Steelers. This was the deal he is waiting on, no?

I'll forgive any coach who didn't succeed with the Jets because they (and the Bears) are the kiss of death. I think Todd Bowles has done an admirable job in TB. Herm Edwards put up a respectable showing in KC post Jets as well. Aaron Glenn has the makings of a good coach but putting your career in the hands of Justin Fields seems a high risk proposition. I'll bet that Sean Payton gets some trade value out of Zach Wilson. I agree with your point about different leadership styles suiting different situations. I was somewhat amazed and disappointed how quickly and badly Doug Pederson flamed out in Jacksonville. I thought he would do well with a young team and QB.

THE ROCKPILE REVIEW – McDermott’s Formula on Display in the NBA
stuvian replied to Shaw66's topic in The Stadium Wall
I'm glad to hear that defensive basketball is making a comeback. I have not been a fan of the era of designated defensive players in the sport. In the sports greatest eras, every player played defense. Sure there have always been selfish players who took defensive plays off but few of those won titles. I'm also tired of today's spoilt stars whining their way out of town and getting coaches fired. Watching the eastern European players succeed by taking free throws and rebounding seriously while the North Americans try and get on Sportscenter with an acrobatic slam dunk or gang thug signals is a marked culture shift. You're not a real basketball player if you don't play defense. Jordan and Lebron played defense at a very high level. Maybe that sounds like old man talk but scoring points in the absence of defense is meaningless. I grew up on the basketball of Paul Silas and Dennis Rodman and it was great! That said, I look forward to a return of defensive football to WNY. We haven't had much of that in the McDermott Beane era. A great franchise QB can make up for a lot. I get your point about team defense, Shaw. In theory, being able to bring pressure from anywhere allows you to keep the opponent off balance. But having a difference maker on D forces teams to double up on a single player which opens things up for the lunch pail guys. I don't doubt McDermott's knowledge of the game. He successfully shut down Derrick Henry and Lamar Jackson. I think it's time that Beane achieved the same personnel results as the Eagles and Rams who have stayed competitive while adding talent. We're closer than we think. If we get three starters on D from the draft and anything out of Bosa that might be enough. -
People talk about the Decade of Fail in negative terms but I will tell you we had fun on the cheap in those years. We never paid more than $80 a ticket. We came across the border in one car and split on gas after stocking up on cheap refreshments at duty free. Back then the loonie was around 80 cents US$. My sister in law worked for one of the major hotel chains and got us the employee rate. We split a $55 dollar a night room four ways! Sure we saw some bad football but we also have some great memories.

I think he'll unretire once he can pass a physical. 34 is pretty young in QB years.

I'm hard pressed to think of a meaningful game the Niners won because of Purdy. His skill set is somewhere in the Jared Goff range

While I did not spend as much time as prior years looking into the draft, I like that Beane addressed positions of need on D. I will be ecstatic to get two starters out of this draft. Any improvement in the pass rush might be enough to put us over the top. We have a great RB in Cook. If Coleman lives up to his talent, we can really say that we have all the ingredients. I was impressed by our run D in the playoffs. We neutralized Henry and Jackson in the divisional round. I credit Clappy for that. The Eagles are young, talented and physically dominating with many of their best on rookie or team friendly contracts. They'll be in the mix again. We are an elite team that can beat anyone on a given day. We need to put it all together on the day it matters.

Steve McMichael from the 85 Bears now in hospice care
stuvian replied to Gregg's topic in The Stadium Wall
Never knew he was a Patriot. That was a classic defense. The Bears have been but a rumour ever since. Not much for longevity with McMichael and Payton leaving us as they will. Life keeps you humble. -

UFL football for those undergoing withdrawal
stuvian replied to simpleman's topic in The Stadium Wall
I've watched bits and pieces. They could do a better job marketing former NFL players. I fully expect that one day soon, the NFL's greed will send everything crashing down. Having the UFL will be handy when it happens.
