Yes, totally agree. i am waiting for the media meltdown over Allen’s first incomplete pass in trading camp. People are ready to run him out of town and he hasn’t played a down here. Allen is a gamble on greatness with a low floor. Didn’t people here argue “just take a big swing”? They did and we won’t know for at least 2 year’s if they were right or not. The tools are there and he is reportedly a hard worker. I was hoping for Rosen over Allen, but I can see why they took their shot on Allen.

I don’t think he has played as much football against good competition as the other top prospects. Grew up in a small town, not a football hotbed. Two years at Wyoming- I hope he will get better with experience- by all accounts I’ve heard he will put in a lot of work.

You don’t have to be a great player to be a good coach. Often the guys who managed to carve out a career as a backup know more about the technical aspects of playing than the great players who can get by with superior physical talent.

This is a pick for the long-term. They didn’t make this pick being unaware that Rosen will be better than Allen in 2018 and maybe 2019. They obviously felt that in the long run Allen has a chance to be very good. They know that there will be a significant learning curve, but are betting on a big payoff over his, hopefully long and successful career. His size, arm and athleticism are what they are betting on - just like the Ravens are with Lamar Jackson. Are they right? None of us will know for at least 2-3 years.

That would be an interesting move, particularly OL. I am hopeful that Jonathan Miller can reemerge and take one of the OG spots, but the OL really lost a lot of talent this offseason.

I wouldn't say they have plenty of picks left - last pick in the third round - 63 picks before then, a late 4th and, I think a couple of 5ths. i am excited by the Edmunds selection and, while I wouldn't have taken Allen, I'm trying to be optimistic that with a good OL and a WR or two he might play something like Cam Newton. Regarding the Newton comment, I am not parroting someone else's' comment - I said that in a thread here a few days ago.

I also see Cam Newton level upside for Allen - and DerekAnderson downside.

Love this pick. Addresses a need with a very high potential player who, at 19, excelled at a high level in college and has great size and tremendous speed. Imagine him in two years with 10 LBs more muscle mass and still great speed with added experience.

Allen is a bet on great physical tools and, reportedly, a good work ethic and intelligence. Wyoming to the NFL is a huge step up in competition AND the trades tonight have depleted the team of valuable draft picks who might have brought badly needed OL and WR help. if they are smart, they will not throw the rookie in behind that dumpster fire OL with little receiving help to boot. unfortunately, McCarron is the sacrificial lamb to take one for the team. This has the look of a team that has top 10, maybe top 5, pick potential. I’m thinking 6-10 in the optimistic end.

It isn’t baseball where a pitcher who can’t throw strikes at any level is a problem. i agree that he is a major gamble and I don’t know if he will succeed at the NFL level, but to those who say accuracy can’t be improved, at least consider that he might be better if he isn’t running for his life while looking for receivers who can’t get open, but yet he has to chuck because that is his team’s only chance. He might be analogous to a great college basketball player on an overmatched team. His shooting percentage may be negatively affected by having to take ill-advised shots because it is his team’s best chance to win.

I agree very much with this post. while his Tweets were certainly racist, they smack more of a high school kid trying (in a misguided way) to be cool than of someone who is a true racist. Now, of course there should be some quick background checks with teachers coaches and friends to see if they observed any more abysmal behavior.

I might believe that part about getting from 12 to 5 for the 56th and 96th pick. Given that it cost the Jets 3 2nd round picks (both this year are better picks than the Bills 2 2nd rounders) to get from 6 to 3, I don't see how it would only cost a late 2nd to go from 5 to 3. If this came to pass, I'd be thrilled, but it seems to me that they'd need to give up more than that to get from 12 to 2.

I absolutely agree that you almost cannot judge Allen from college tape as his team was so severely out-talented by most competition. The most meaningless points I've heard are about his performance against Power 5 conference teams. Well, of course he is under great pressure and none of his receivers can get open against the superior athletes. He couldn't look good in those situations at all. Still, he does have accuracy problems. Question is, can they be fixed if he has better protection and some decent receivers? I kind of think he could end up on about the same level as Cam Newton - or he could be another Derek Anderson.

I agree that Allen clearly has more physical talent than Rudolph. I also agree that Rudolph is a bit of a lumbering athlete. It is hard for me to see on the videos that I have access to that Rudolph's arm is as weak as some say. I am surely no scout and there are definitely several reports that scouts view Rudolph's arm as substandard, so you may very well be right.

I think Rudolph could become a good NFL starter. I would be happy with them selecting him, though I would hope that they could do it a shade later than 12, but not sure they can wait till 22 if they want him.

I just don't see Rudolph as that bad when I watch him. You may be right, as I am not a professional scout. However, I see a guy who looks like he could be a good starting NFL QB, without top arm strength. Now, at least in my view, a lot of very good NFL QBs don't have rocket launchers. I see Rudolph as having "adequate" arm strength not "weak". I guess we'll find out over the next 2-3 years.

But that would be a horrible deal. 12, 22, 56, a top 10 pick next year and more for - a QB who could not carry his college team to great success- yet many think that magically they will do just that with a Bills team under-talented and strangled by having traded away prime draft picks.

Perhaps I was wrong, but I thought that your point was that the Bills wanted a QB this year, so they acquired extra picks to try to trade up for one. That was their PLAN, but circumstances may preclude them from making good on that plan.

I’ve saved a lot of my income with a plan to retire at 55, but I am now closing in on 58 and circumstances have prevented me from retiring and likely won’t for at least 5 more years. Point is plans are plans, don’t confuse them with reality.

They have been picking late and taking “swings” at QB like many here say a good franchise should. Neither Osweiler nor Lynch were picked early and were more shots taken on physical talented players rather than high risk gambles early in the draft.
