Trades that should happen: Cordy Glenn to Giants
billsfan89 replied to Peace Frog's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Why are people so eager to get rid of Glenn? Is Glenn hated in the locker room? I haven't heard any reports of that so unless that's the case I find it perplexing as to why fans of the team would want to trade away the starting left tackle of the team whose return has coincided with drastically improved O-line play. I get that Glenn has a big contract and some injury issues but he is back healthy and playing dam well. He isn't a sore thumb in the locker room nor is unproductive or under performing. Why on Earth would you want to trade away the anchor to the O-line? -
I liked Dareus his first few years here. He was such a dominating player from 2013 to 2014 one of the top defensive tackles in the league, even in 2011 and 2012 he was a very good player greatly helping out the run defense which coincided with Kyle becoming such a dominating player. But 2015 once he got paid he just started to play good enough. 2016 he had suspension and injury issues. This past year he never bought into what the coaching staff was doing, and although he wasn't playing bad (I think he was playing average to above average) he just wasn't living up to his contract/talent level and must have been an issue in the locker room. McD and company clearly believe that it is addition by subtraction, the draft pick is fairly inconsequential and the short term cap relief not major. Just getting Dareus off of the team must have been viewed as a huge plus as the cap return and draft pick aren't that major at least short term. I do think this move could work out for the Jags, at least it could work out for this season. A change of scenery and a familiar coach as well as joining a strong defensive core could be a kick start for Dareus's career. But the Bills just needed to move on, wish they were able to get a little more for him but they made the move they thought was best for the team.

As good as this team has been so far I doubt Calvin Johnson is going to come out of retirement to play with Tyrod Taylor in Buffalo. That's not shitting on this team, but rather acknowledging that the player in questions preference is more likely to want to play with a QB that throws the ball more and a team that has at least one other really good WR on the roster. I see the Eagles as being a team to try and take a chance on him. They have Jeffery, Ertz, and some other decent WR's but could use a top tier WR to make the offense elite. Wentz is a young QB coming into his stride and they don't run the ball and play conservative as much. They also sit at 7-1 in command of their division. I would love for the Bills to try and make this happen but for what Calvin Johnson wants at this stage of his career Buffalo might not be a great fit. I could see the Bills making a move for a WR but not this one.

I could be wrong but there are no reports of Glenn being a negative in the locker room or anything to that effect. Glenn has had some injury issues and is on a big contract but when he has been on the field he has been dam good and he seems to be well liked and respected in the locker room. Seems like Dareus and Sammy were locker room issues in addition to other issues for the team. Glenn's return has completely coincided with a return in the ground game, those two things are related.

It shows how important the locker room is to what the coaches are trying to build. As talented as Sammy and Dareus were they had egos about their individual performance that likely were the cause of some locker room issues, Darby on the other hand had issues with management and wasn't a great fit for the scheme. Overall I think that the team has bought into what the coach is doing and it did show on that Tate play. With the larger negative forces gone they have completed a fresh start and winning both cures and justifies everything.

Brandon Beane already top 3 worst GM's in bills history
billsfan89 replied to Yeezus's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The Bills were 4-2 last year, so I don't put that much stock into the hot start. But winning cures everything. Dareus was given away for a low round pick. Most times when the Bills would dump a player for pennies on the dollar we would have real reason to think that the team was just giving away talent for some stupid reason. But McD and Beane have proven that they want to build a culture and have everyone on the same page. Dareus must have been a really big issue in the locker room for them to just dump him for a fairly low return. It's a bold strategy for sure but fortune favors the bold. How the Bills team plays will determine how successful these trades are. If the team fades down the stretch into a 7-8 win team then we know that sometimes the process needs more talent or the team just didn't have the depth to win. But if they go 10-6 and make the playoffs without all of these talented players then they will have justified their approach and have a ton of cap space and picks to build up the roster into a real contender. -
2018 draft would you be upset if
billsfan89 replied to Dboodrow's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I wouldn't want an RB in round 1 or 2. With 2 3rd round picks at your disposal you are better off looking for a heir apparent to Shady in rounds 3 or 4. RB's are a dime a dozen and Shady might still have 1 more good year left. I would much rather see a DT and WR in round 1 then got with a CB and TE in round 2. Guard and RB could be needs best off addressed in round 3. The team could also address 2 or more needs in free agency. Tons of cap space and tons of picks don't usually go hand in hand with a competitive team. So hopefully the Bills finish the year strong and make the playoffs. A playoff birth really looks good of McD and what he is trying to do. Free agents will actually think of the Bills as a winning situation, then a strong draft class could be brought in to fill out the gaps. -
I thought maybe the Bills could holdout for a 3rd rounder or better. For the Bills to give up on Dareus for only a 6th or 5th Dareus must not be very well liked in the locker room. A well liked player who is under performing could be a lot harder to let go than a malcontent who no one likes anyway. They must think it's a lot of addition by subtraction and the added cap space however modest this year is worth it. I think in years past giving up on a talent like Dareus would be read as the team giving talent away for little return. But with how good this staff has looked at 4-2 you kind of trust them a little more with how to handle a locker room malcontent. Winning makes everyone look better. I think the team could have held out until 2018 if they didn't get a better offer but maybe they were just itching to dump him. Seems like this staff wants their players to be All-In all the time no exceptions. It's a disciplinarian method of coaching but it can win and be highly successful.

2018 salary cap & draft asset update
billsfan89 replied to YoloinOhio's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
They are going to at least restructure 1 or 2 of those contracts. If all of those players finish strong they could do a lot of restructuring to keep players for another year while also adding some more cap space in 2018. I think Clay and Hughes are the most likely to be cut or take a restructure. Clay is finally coming of age but he might be banged up which might limit his production the rest of the season. Hughes is a good player but isn't a dominant player. If he fades a little down the stretch or gets hurt they might persuade him to take a restructure that still pays him well but cuts a little off the top to save some space. Shady, Tyrod, and Glenn are more likely to finish the season strong and have a better position to refuse a restructure. -
Are the Bills Oppressing Anquan Boldin?
billsfan89 replied to Gugny's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I would hold out and see if some team is willing to give you a 7th for Boldin but if the market isn't there after a week or two then just release him. -
I don't think people understood that "Inmates Running the Asylum" is just a colloquialism and metaphor about there needing to be someone in charge. It doesn't literally mean that the players are prisoners in this context. I get the sensitivity of the players given the atmosphere of the league and the country. Seems to me like it was a bad choice of words and even though in context they aren't ill intended it definitely can come across that way.
-
Not sure there is much of a market for Boldin. Boldin is 37 coming off of his least productive season. I am sure some team would have been willing to give him a contract at the league minimum but what team is going to want to trade a 7th round pick for him at 2.5 million? I think a team would rather take on one of the other veterans out on the market for less money and not having to give up a draft pick. I think the Bills did the right thing letting him test the market without letting him walk for nothing. Boldin quit on the team for good or bad reasons but the Bills shouldn't let him leave for greener pastures without seeking something in return.

Big issue with Dareus is that he is a malcontent. If he was just under performing but a good citizen I think you have to stick with him this year and next. But if he continues to be an issue butting heads with the coaching staff and causing locker room issues and distractions I think in the off-season you have to trade him. I think in the 2018 off-season a desperate team would likely buy low on Dareus hoping to tap into his potential and in 2018 that cap hit is only a one year commitment. I think you could at least get a 4th in 2018 and a 6th or 7th in 2019 for Dareus if not a 2018 3rd rounder at least. Even right now he still plays at an above average level, his play is still effective, he just isn't the dominating player he could be. But overall I think you have to hope that Dareus can turn it around. The D-line is fairly old. Hughes is 31 and Kyle is likely in his last season here. Outside of Shaq there isn't much youth on the D-line. If Dareus can turn it around he could anchor the D-line for the next 3-4 seasons.

Dawkins had one bad game, it happens to rookies, he has been more good than bad at LT. I would love to see him get a shot at RT. Seems like Glenn can handle the LT duties and be highly productive. If Dawkins can be decent at RT and Glenn be what he was or close to it at LT then we might see the O-line turn things around.

I think in 2018 you might find a taker, but to take on his salary the remainder of this season (Which with cap space rolling over eating up a lot of space in 2017 matters) and in 2018 would be insane. I think some team might be willing to throw the Bills a 4th for Dareus. Dareus is still playing at an above average level and has tantalizing potential. In 2018 that cap number is a lot more reasonable considering you can get out of it 2019 fairly painlessly. I don't see a major trade coming from Beane, John Brown for a 6th I could see but not sure how desperate the Cards are to sell on him.

In 2014 the Bills faced a woeful Raiders team and were 8-6 going into that game. Had the Bills won that game they might have been able to make the playoffs at 10-6. The two wildcard spots went to the 10-5-1 Bengals and the 10-6 Ravens. Hypothetically the Bills had they won that game in Oakland they would have been 9-6 going into a Pats game that they won (Brady got pulled in the second half because the game meant nothing to the Pats even if the Bills were 9-6 that game still would have meant nothing standings wise, although the Bills were winning at halftime after Brady had played a full half.) Not sure how the tiebreaker between the Bills and Ravens broke-down that year. Both teams would have been 6-6 in conference but the Bills were 4-2 in their division compared to the Ravens who were 3-3 in their division. Not sure exactly how everything else broke down tiebreaker wise. But that late season loss to the Raiders was a back breaker. Directly killed the Bills chances of making the playoffs that year in a game that the Bills should have won.

The Bills were 4-2 last year going into a key game against the Fins who were still finding themselves. The Bills lost and the Fins went on a huge run to get into the playoffs. This weeks game is huge but its far too early to say that it is any bigger than a lot of other games the Bills have had after hot starts. I will say this IF the Bills win on Sunday and are 5-2 then the Jets game will be one of the biggest games for the Bills in a decade. Not only a key divisional game but a win there would put the Bills at 6-2 on the season a pretty insane first half that sets them up well for the second half of the season.

It wouldn't be a bad move, if Gaines is hurt you could do worse in your hunt for a replacement.
-
The Jauron teams had a bend don't break defense that was at times accomplishing the bending while not breaking, but those are the types of defenses you can actually win with if you have a QB. To be honest if you have a top 10 QB in the league you will always have a good shot to win as long as you have any semblance of talent on the team.
-
The Bucs have an insane amount of offensive talent, Jamis has all the tools to be a MVP (Just needs to make better decisions), Mike Evans is a legit WR1 and if he just limits the drops could be one of the best 2-5 receivers in the league. DeSean Jackson is a pretty good number 2, Brate is a solid tightend, and Howard has a ton of potential to be a top tight end. Their O-line is one of the best in the league this year, and they have a very good RB combo, with Martin being a good between the tackles runner and Rodgers being a good third down back. The offense bailed the defense for once and the team got the win. The defense should still be good but they just ran into a top 5 offense. If Jamis develops his decision making and polishes up a bit more then Tampa could be an offense force for years to come.

Jason Peters suspected ACL/MCL tears
billsfan89 replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Peters has been dam good with Philly. 3 years first team All-Pro 2011, 2013, 2014), 1 time second team All-Pro (2010), in 10 years. He is the anchor to their O-line and has been since they traded for him. Not that the Bills lost him for nothing but they let a great talent slip for no reason other than they didn't want to pay him. We let him go and another team not only happily paid him but they gave up 3 draft picks including a 1st round pick to acquire him. The Bills got lucky with Cordy Glenn 2 years later who has turned out to be a good LT. But the Bills should have realized what they had in Peters and done business with him. Even if Peters handled his business in a less than desirable way they should have known the type of talent they were letting go. -
Whaley was an OK GM in my opinion. I think the scheme changes certainly didn't help his track record but he made some bad picks here and there as he also made some good ones too. Whaley as a drafter was mediocre but his best talent was the pro-personnel side where he was able to some fairly good work. The McCoy trade, signing Tyrod, addressing the tight end position with Charles Clay, Zach Brown one year deal, signing InCog and then resigning him, Corey Graham, Brandon Spikes, keeping Jerry Hughes (I also think the original Hughes trade happened weeks before he became GM), and even this past off-season he was still in charge when they signed Hyde and Proyer. There were other smaller depth moves that he made that also were much more productive than they should have been. Overall I think that even if his drafting left a lot to be desired his moves on the pro side were good. I think he grades out as an average GM. Glad McD and Beane are here (You want your coach and GM on the same page) but I can't think of Whaley as a disaster.

Jason Peters suspected ACL/MCL tears
billsfan89 replied to Big Turk's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Very sad, looks like it is a season ending injury and at his age with a decent injury history it could be a career ender. -
Which is unfortunate because he could be had at a fairly affordable price (The Steelers likely would take him for a late round pick definitely no more than a 5th) and could add a dimension to the offense that is desperately needed even if everyone is healthy. But too many issues overall.
