Cook is a great example of where it gets tricky. the easiest contracts for GMs to give out are the ones to great players. No one batted at eye at paying Josh. Whether he’s the best or the second best, everyone knows he’s elite and worth it. the hardest are the “borderline” elite guys, especially if they hold their ground. Cook is clearly very good and can likely command near elite money. If the Bills wanted to give him that, he’d be signed. But like @Augie said, you can’t pay everyone. And every extra dollar you give Cook, there’s less to go around. The extra challenge is that we are in an ever shortening SB window. That gives Cook some more leverage to squeeze out money, but also means you don’t get too many more mistakes before you run out of time. Ultimately, I think you have to stick to your guns as a GM. The Jets think Sauce is worth top of the market money. Sauce thinks if he hits FA, he’s gonna get top of the market money.
