WideNine Posted November 12 Posted November 12 (edited) 18 hours ago, Richard Noggin said: While we've all at least entertained the too old/too small accusations, I think it might be more nuanced, and more connected to philosophy and game-planning. As McDermott has had longer to fully install his vision for how to win consistently in the NFL, it seems the offense has become more and more devoted to staying on schedule, remaining two-dimensional on 3rd downs, and controlling possession. Looks to me like my favorite coaches choose instead to SCORE POINTS on offense above all else. The potential issue with McD's deliberate, paced approach, is that it will likely keep "inferior" opponents within reach on the scoreboard for longer, resulting in more opportunities for the opposing offenses to "remain two-dimensional" and play their own brand of physical, but unpredictable, football. This means more snaps when the Bills defense is getting dictated to, and run at, and hit. If you're intentionally reducing possessions, then you're also intentionally reducing points, right? The Bills looked a lot better against the Dolphins once they got desperate/urgent. Why wouldn't you start the game with that kind of aggression, try to score a million points, and continue to mix in more and more run and ball control as the game script allows? Let the defense play with a dang LEAD once in a awhile. Lessen their burden. Keep them FRESH. Agree it is more nuanced and good points that game script means a lot with the way this team is built. Our defense was likely more built (before being decimated by injury) around playing with a lead and facing offenses that were forced into more one dimensional options having to pass to catch up. Not so much offenses that can be balanced, pound the rock, eat clock and wear them out. Not playing with the lead puts our defensive makeup in a position where they have to actually stop the run and get off the field on 3rd down to give our offense a chance to catch up. To get that lead they have to have enough investment outside of Allen and Cook and really well-scripted early possessions to get a lead. If we win the toss and we give the ball to their offense (hoping to get the halftime double dip) our defense has to go out and get a 3 and out or turnover, which they actually did in Miami, but our offense did nothing with it. Another wasted draft pick I am ok with taking a chance on a guy with a 9.88 RAS. This board complains this team doesn’t have freak athletes but then the Bills draft one who doesn’t perform his rookie year and it’s a waste. The Bills going into the draft had the luxury of being fairly set at DE for 2025. Bosa/AJE /Groot and Hoecht were 4 capable starting caliber DE’s the Bills could take a chance to develop a guy for a year who has high upside and athleticism. It sucks he got hurt but him and Walker were the risky picks this team needs to keep making esp after round 1-2 when prospects are usually flawed heavily 1 Quote

In no way are there ever 128 flawless football players (to get through rounds 3 & 4) in a draft. Once you get below pick #15 of the first round, GMs generally have to pick and choose among increasing development needs. Whether you like it or not, Beane and McDermott are smarter and more knowledgeable than you. You reveal your underdeveloped mind with that "McClappy crap." Heaven forbid a coach stay upbeat in support of his players. Quote

Brown started 10 games as a rookie and Bernard was behind Edmunds and Milano and not expected to contribute. We had a need to DE due to injuries etc and Jackson still could not get on the field and was falling behind guys. Quote

Joe B repeated many times that the Jackson pick was always more about 2026 than it was this year. I do believe he's correct, as Beane has many times picked for needs that are projected 2 years in advance. On the one hand, I agree that pick could have been used wiser to help this year. There is no argument there. What I would offer is that with both Bosa and AJE scheduled to be free agents, it wasn't the worst plan. Honestly, had he stayed healthy and had a couple nice plays to help us this year as well...that would have been terrific. Quote
