McDermott statement in presser is telling concerning our offense

Coach was asked about the passing offense being ineffective and he said it would be nice to be effective but it will basically only be effective when working in concert with the running game.

 

I strongly disagree with that statement as a whole, but agree that’s what we need RIGHT NOW because of front office neglect. Yes, we all want a good ground game. And we have a very good ground game when Cook is on the field. But a good ground game, IMO, is easier to shut down than a good pass game is, which we don’t have right now. At least a good passing game when the ground game isn’t effective.

 

Just a few years back, the perfect game followed up by the 13 seconds game, the Bills passing game was humming and the offense, with a pretty mediocre ground game, was basically as unstoppable as an offense can be.

 

The Bills neglecting our superstar QB and forgetting how we became a contending team is why we are in this mess, at least on offense. A tight end heavy offense shouldn’t be a staple when you have Josh ***** Allen as your QB.

In McD's universe, one does not use the passing game to set the running game under any circumstances. The gentlemanly thing to do is to only use passes that are defended the same as runs so as not to cause confusion or mismatches for the opposing defense.  It's simply unthinable.

It would be one thing if we were using the running game to set up the pass. 

 

But we aren't even doing that, lol. We use the run game and it either works or it doesn't. And then we pass and hope for the best...

why do you think this is “FO neglect?” I think it is an intentional decision. I think they think this is the offense that is going to win in the playoffs. Ball control, physical, some timely Josh plays.

McDaniel alluded to it coming out of the locker room in the 2nd half. Miami played the run and dared us to beat them downfield and we could not do it. We were unprepared for it. This is what happens when you play a team with nothing to lose. If we beat them deep well that would be the expected outcome no harm, no foul on McDaniel's part, they are 2-7. But if it works (like it did) well then he looks like a genius and the Bills drag their sorry asses back to Buffalo with their tails between their legs.

The Bills didnt attack using their run game at all.  The pass splits out of shotgun are incredibly low.  Why be one dimensional by formation on first and second down?  Pass from under center.  Regular drop back. It doesn't have to be play-action because by formation the defense is preparing for a run.  The run game or threat of it is real.  Out of shotgun it goes away.

this was what was infuriating. This team is meant to be in 12 and 13 personnel. Don’t fight it!

McDermott is the last guy you want to analyze offensive play. He’s basically a defensive/ST coach who’s team has been lacking fundamentals, which he preaches constantly. How does he explain not wrapping up ball carriers, missing tackles and blown coverages leaving receivers wide open. Also inexcusable PFs, presnap penalties and poor halftime adjustments.His strengths were supposed to be motivation and preparation which the Bills didn’t have against lesser opponents this season.(NE, Atlanta, Miami) It’s called being “buttoned up “. This guy is the worst possible HC for a Josh Allen led team. He’s like having a retired military war veteran who played on his college team, coaching in the NFL. My sympathies to the great fans that travel( with the gov’t shutdown no less) and watch these embarrassing performances. Much respect.

Who is fighting it is my question.  Is it Josh not liking to pass from under center?  If so gotta get used to it right now.  His numbers and metrics are very good when he does.

I think he displayed some irritation with Brady and the O when he said when you have Josh Allen you should be able to move the ball through the air. And he's right. Personnel or not, the current offense when you have Allen is ridiculous.  You think a Sean Mcvay O would look like this???

NE was mainly turnovers.  They moved the ball very well.  Atl and Miami felt different.  They wanted to attack outside out of spread looks.  By doing so they nurfed their run game and became one dimensional.  I dont understand how you come out of KC and decided not to keep that going.

With Kincaid out we literally have zero passing game beyond 5 yards.  It's utterly remarkable the level of professional malpractice that sentence requires to be true with Allen at QB.
