I'm totally on the Curtis Samuel train.  I don't think he's suddenly gotten bad.   I believe he'll break out soon.

Break out with what? The measles? The Bubonic plague? Some other type of pox that keeps him on IR for another month?

When has he been good? He’s not an actual WR that can run routes he’s a gimmick/gadget guy. Just look at the one route he broke off to try and get open for Josh he completely bift it.

Samuel's a gimmick/gadget guy.

And he's also an actual WR that can run routes.

He's done both in his career. The Bills seem to want him more as a gadget guy, but he's also run routes for us.

I agree to a point, but why continue to extend your own, when your own hasn’t gotten it done?  The only extensions that look justified are Cook, Brown, Shakir and Benford.  Look how many extensions have been handed out to the completely mediocre D and explain it to me.  Shakir might be overpaid a bit for his production, but 3/4 of the worthwhile extensions fall on O yet the D keeps getting resigned.. why?

Because they haven't "haven't gotten it done."

Rousseau for one is a good player who's getting it done. Top 30 is sacks last year despite not having a guy on the other side to take some attention away.  One of the best in the league at setting the edge. We'd all love him to be a top five or ten sacker, but that's not a reasonable expectation for a guy picked at #30. He earned his extension.

You seem to be blaming the performance of the whole defense on the guys who got extensions, which again is unreasonable. You can expect them to play their own positions well. Which they are. And it ain't as if any of them are now super high-paid for their positions. You can't blame Oliver because we had problems at safety and CB and LB injuries, it ain't defensible.

I’m blaming the guys who got extensions because they haven’t done anything either.  Oliver makes about 6 plays a year and is too injured to be an impact the rest of the year.  Rousseau feast on terrible teams and gets washed against others, let’s not bother with the LBs they are all made of glass and get bullied like a S by linemen.  The whole defense sucks and it’s all starting with resigning mediocre time and time again.

Biggest weakness on this team next to pass rusher (though Bosa has been really good). It’s fine against most teams but it shows up in the playoffs. This team is awesome but it is wild that a guy with Allen’s arm is becoming a dink and dunk passer.

I bet we make another trade this year.

suggestions ?

You sound immovable in your opinion here.

Just simplify it and say McDermotts defense scheme and designs are the fault. It is His to own and always will be.

I may not agree. But blaming players categorically might be a broad brush.

Standing on my stump here and saying 'It is a Team Game" and The Coaches own that

Yeah, this organization is totally fine with signing mediocre back up players and expect them to break out here. Or they love signing injured players thinking they  will recover and be as good as new.
Worked great so far!

The same organization has also spent a top pick (I know Coleman was the 1st pick in the 2nd round) on a boundary WR.   If Coleman breaks out then this offense will change as he will demand the ball more in the game.

Agreed, it was late too, that was on JA

It was fractionally late and Keon did a nice job on that rep, no doubt. He had separation and room to make the catch. But it was also a great play by the rookie safety. Sometimes you just have to tip your cap and say the other guys get paid too.

I think if we look at the top 5-10 sack leaders in recent years we'd see a number of guys drafted later than 30, wouldn't we? I know TJ Watt was the SAME pick as Rousseau, for example, and Hendrickson, Crosby, and Hunter were all much later picks. So...

The bolded is where we potentially enter into Tremaine Edmunds excuses territory: how do we know Groot is setting the edge with such success? Honest question. And is that enough for a DE with $20+ million cap hits upcoming? It's enough this year at his low cap #, I guess, but the Bills are locked in for a couple more years. I hope the giant, talented dude discovers violence, but I'm not super hopeful.

I am also not optimistic about Groot turning it a notch this season and next season

We know because the tape shows it. That's the bottom line. He hasn't quite been himself this year, apparently because of the bone bruise, but he's been a really terrific edge setter as a Bill. Never been a great sack artist, but he's not paid like a great sack artist.

Is he worth the 15th highest AAV for an edge defender? When his contract will slide further and further down over the next few years? Yeah, he is. He isn't paid as an elite edge, or even close. He's paid for what he is, a good player, who hopefully will look better if the Bills can have some more pressure from the other side and from DTs like Deone and Sanders as they learn what it takes to make it in the NFL.

Yeah, that's how statistics work, Richard. There will be a few outliers who wildly exceed expectations. But if you use that fact to pretend that all guys picked late should perform like those few outliers and that they're disappointments if they don't reach that standard, you're mostly just courting disappointment.

Look at the average guy picked later and you should expect performance that is about average for that level. Groot is at that level and probably a bit higher.

If you want a guy who performs like the guys you mention, or for instance Aidan Hutchinson or Miles Garrett or Nick Bosa or  the younger Joey Bosa or JJ Watt or Khalil Mack or Chandler Jones or Von or Micah Parsons or Will Anderson or Travon Walker or, well, there aren't that many of that kind of guy. And the majority of them can be found in one place. You want any kind of high percentage chance, you'd better pick from about #20 or higher.

He was more productive with both Carolina and Washington before coming here.

Something just didn't click.  He isn't without talent.

I felt the same way and had myself convinced that he would be our WR2 … oh well, I liked Josh Rosen too 😂
