It was a symptom of our "Disguise the D until the last second" philosophy. Ravens ran up and quick snapped it. Entire D was out of sorts. It's by design of our scheme and gameplan. 1 Quote
BillytheKid Posted September 8 Posted September 8 I wouldn’t worry about the defense for now. First of all they won’t play anybody as explosive offensively as the Ravens the rest of the year. Once Hoecht and Ogunjobi are back it will help with more depth. Plus more games the young guys play they will get better. I’ll worry about the defense if they can’t hold their own against most of the rest of the teams or in the playoffs if they aren’t better by the time they come around. Nobody will be stopping the Bills offense or Ravens offenses this year. Any team that plays either one of them will have to have an offense that can score as many points as they can which no one else in the league will be able to do for the most part on most days anyways. Obviously there could be a game or two where either one of their offenses if off but for the most part think both will score at will on most teams. Bills just need to get the 1 seed this year so everyone has to come through Buffalo. 1 Quote

Rocky Landing Posted September 8 Posted September 8 I know that Milano, and Bernard graded low for this game. But the duel, threat of Lamar/Henry, the need to keep Lamar contained, and the weakness of our secondary, made this an extremely difficult situation to fully cover their positions. Low grades notwithstanding, I don't think they were the problem with this defense. Quote

That makes it axiomatic that if an offense is able to man handle our DL and get to the 2nd level, they're going to struggle. It's my problem with PFF grades. They look for plays - plays made or not made. But football is the ultimate team game, the ultimate chess match. They don't assess what is the effect on the LB of the DL getting their asses handed to them, or losing contain on the run. Spoiler: it's bad But because that , we need stout D line especially in the middle let the lbs run Quote

Outside of maybe the Bengals and Eagles the Ravens are by far going to be the best offense this team faces all season. Henry and Lamar make the most insane dual threat combo in the league esp as Lamar to his credit (and this is something I did not think he could have developed into) has developed into a very good passer and field general. The pressure that gets put on LB's and safeties in the run game by those two is unmatched in the league. You basically have to have a defensive line win at the point of attack or you are going to get gashed. The defense as a whole struggled outside of the clutch plays they made at the end. You don't give up 40 points all on defense just because your safeties struggled. 1 1 Quote

Sargent Hulka Posted September 8 Posted September 8 I thought Milano, as well as Dorian Williams and Bernard, were completely negated, especially Brernard who was tossed aside by that big Ravens line. 1 2 Quote
BillsFooteball Posted September 9 Posted September 9 Rough night for linebacker and safety play. I do see he was credited with a sack last night. I can’t recall the play though if someone can help me out. Wasn’t there one play that Lamar got back to line scrimmage or gained a yard? Quote
EmotionallyUnstable Posted September 9 Posted September 9 The back 7 were brutal in run support last night, Milano included. 2 Quote
L Ron Burgundy Posted September 9 Posted September 9 You can be a Milano fan and admit he played horrible. Aside from Oliver they just about all did on defense. 1 Quote

Royale with Cheese Posted September 9 Posted September 9 The Ravens always gash us in the run game. Even when we had a good run defense. Im thinking its just that their run offense coaching is better than our run defense coaching. There are massive holes or people only in position to put a hand on Henry and that’s worthless. Quote

They also play big and McDermott is willing to play the long game with a 6 man box lol sometimes 7 He's playing a long game.. and daring them to continue it for 60 minutes which is tough on any coach to have that commitment... Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't But 70 years of modern football say you probably wants seven sometimes 8 in the box to slow them down... But McDermotts defenses historically tighten up in the red zone and later in the game And he gets a full read on that Ravens run game through three quarters.. to where those last couple drives when they did try up the gut... On it like white on rice But he does give up three quarters of getting gashed because he doesn't want to put more people in the box 1 Quote

With the exception of Oliver I don’t think too many guys played well at all. They both don’t get a pass. Nor do the D coaches including McD .. not acceptable championship caliber D. Quote

Babich said in his presser today that he thinks Bernard thought too much during the game. That is surprising to me but I also applaud his candidness on his captain. Maybe it is because of game 1 and the Ravens put a lot of new things in. That explaination can easily be extended to Milano for not able to trigger his action as quickly as we saw in the past. My main concern is whether Milano can indeed re-capture his magic following thru recent injury years, and unlike the reporters, I'm not holding high hopes. Same goes for Tra White where I'm fine with rolling with Strong if everything goes well in the next few games. Quote
