Four people, including a New York Police Department officer, were killed in today’s shooting in Midtown Manhattan, a law enforcement official told CNN.

The shooter, tentatively identified as a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, is also dead from what police believe is a self-inflicted injury.

The shooting occurred at a 634-foot skyscraper, located at 345 Park Avenue, that includes corporate offices for the National Football League and Blackstone.

Saw a report that the shooter said he had CTE and mentioned the NFL in a note found.

Mayor Eric Adams said on Tuesday morning that the authorities “have reason to believe that he was focused on the N.F.L.,” which has offices at the tower, 345 Park Avenue. A three-page note found on the gunman mentioned the league, as well as claims that the man had suffered from the degenerative brain disease chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or C.T.E., from playing football, the police said. It asks that his brain be examined for signs of C.T.E. and accuses the league of concealing the dangers of the game. https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/07/29/nyregion/nyc-shooting-manhattan?campaign_id=60&emc=edit_na_20250729&instance_id=159456&nl=breaking-news&regi_id=124688203&segment_id=202830&user_id=7d4d7d8af86b7cc8b09f3e6e69dc941f

No mention of the CTE angle............

Fwiw, Bloomberg News is reporting the CTE part of the story. However they also mention long time mental illness of the shooter

UPDATE:

Gunman who killed 4 at NYC building was targeting NFL offices but took wrong elevator, mayor says

A gunman who killed four people at a Manhattan office building before killing himself was trying to target the headquarters of the National Football League but took the wrong elevator, Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday.

Investigators believe Shane Tamura, of Las Vegas, was trying to get to the NFL offices after shooting several people Monday in the building’s lobby but accidentally entered the wrong set of elevator banks, Adams said in interviews.

Four people, including off-duty New York City Police Officer Didarul Islam, were killed. Police said Tamura had a history of mental illness, and a rambling note found on his body suggested that he had a grievance against the NFL over a claim that he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy, which can only be diagnosed after someone has died. He played high school football in California nearly two decades ago, but he never played in the NFL.

NEW YORK (AP) — A gunman who killed four people at a Manhattan office building before killing himself was trying to target the headquarters of the National Football League but took the wrong elevator, Mayor Eric Adams said Tuesday.

“He seemed to have blamed the NFL,” the mayor told WPIX-TV. "The NFL headquarters was located in the building, and he mistakenly went up the wrong elevator bank.”

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a memo to staff that a league employee was seriously injured in the attack and was hospitalized in stable condition.

“We are deeply grateful to the law enforcement officers who responded to this threat quickly and decisively and to Officer Islam, who gave his life to protect others,” Goodell said.

The note found on Tamura claimed he had been suffering from CTE — the degenerative brain disease that has been linked to concussions and other repeated head trauma common in contact sports like football — and said his brain should be studied after he died, two people familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

Football is toast folks. It's just a matter of when. CTE, gambling and greed have all but killed it.

If OJ wasn't a psycho during his career, why was he a psycho after?

Aaron Donald left in his prime. The writing is on the wall. Responsible parents won't put their kids in the sport.

Wrong on so many levels.

OJ also was a wife beater while he was in the NFL.

And to say “responsible parents” won’t let their kids play football is one big horse ***** statement.

Football isn't toast. Accountability is toast. You play football, like any other job, you need to face the reality you take risks.

Football isn't even the top of the lists for most dangerous sports. *****, being a dental hygienist as a career is more damaging.

These guys are paid handsomely and need to have more than a room level IQ to realize they're not being friendly to their body as modern day gladiators. But it is far and between a player lasts over 5-6 years so by 30 they're done and should be well off.

Its a bit scary that kids who never even played college ball are showing some signs of this. Is it reasonable to think a high % of people who played 10+ years from youth on have some evidence of this? I really don't know. I don't know if we could ever know that. But I don't think it's outside the realm of possibilities.

Or that the studies that found the guy who discovered it didn't follow all of the principles of science to record his findings...and we all may have it in some form or another.

It reminds me of people being scared about bulging discs when over half the population over 40 have them, active or not.

Don’t know enough about how the studies were conducted to say these things. What are you basing this on? I agree it seems to like everybody has CTE, but it also seems a bit crazy to think the NFL would be held hostage this effectively by a bunch of claims that had zero validity.

The difference is football  even at a very good high school level has already weeded out most of the parents who won't let their kids play... The ones who are playing at 16 17 have a father who played, it's a generational thing, it's something that could get them to college

Even in my time there was a bunch of parents who would not let their kids strap it up and play football...

Football like boxing is a sport that can get you out of your town... It could get you from the bottom and give you a future

That's not going to stop the biggest percentage of kids playing football who are doing it as an outlet.. football is how we used to keep kids off the streets and out of gangs in the city

You keep on occupied if you keep them off the street

That still is how it is in a lot of places

If you played football from 7 through high School and you banged a lot of heads and took a lot of hits

Yes 100% kids who played through high School have it

I would be inclined to agree. You hit your head thousands of times over ten years of youth and high school ball. I’m sure most have some evidence of it.

Absolutely

I am going to donate my brain when I die cuz I am certain I have it after 15 years of playing ball

I'm certain..but my short term memory is affected and I'm foggy alot..  but thank God I don't have any of the self-harm thoughts.. and I just pray that everybody going through this goes to the doctor and doesn't do anything drastic
