Should Dion look like this?

So if all OL suffer massive weight loss between OTA’s, training camp, and the regular season, then why aren’t they all ridiculously overweight at this time of year?

Sorry…I am not buying what you are selling.

First of all I never said massive amount

I said they lose weight throughout the year… I said I used to lose a good amount of weight during football season

And secondly I guarantee most lineman are coming in 15 pounds heavier than they’re playing weight

Because you’re going to lose 10 pounds in camp… And maybe another five in the regular season

If you play 325 most lineman are coming in at 340

And who says dion is ridiculously overweight? Have you weighed him?

All lineman are coming in with extra pounds… Whether you can see it or not

Because they’re losing weight throughout the process

I’m curious…how do you know what they weigh now, how much they lose in training camp, and how much they lose in the regular season…unless you work for the Bills, and this is your job?

Otherwise, you can’t guarantee(your words not mine) anything.

While I know that is true it is more than that with Dion because he has a history of these fluctuations. It isn't so much the size he is that concerns me, it is whether he can properly control it between now and January. That has been a bigger challenge for Dion than for other OL on the Bills let alone around the league.

I hope he can control his weight throughout the year and have a really consistent season because I agree with you at his best he is a top 10-12 type left tackle. But the fans with concerns about his weight are not just overreacting. As I said earlier the Bills have been concerned in the past with his tendency to fulctuate.

I have no idea how much each player Weighs exactly on the bills

But I’ve been in enough locker rooms

I played division one football… I’ve coached and scouted

"I lose, on average, 10 pounds per practice," Wilkins, who stands 6-foot-4 and typically plays between 310 and 315 pounds, tells me.

Quote from an NFL player… I lose 10 pounds per practice

Unless you’re a skinny twig like Spencer Brown

Every single NFL lineman loses weight during mini camp and training camp and the season… Football is a grind

I used to lose a decent amount of weight during a football season

There’s no reason for Dion Dawkins to come in at his actual Sunday game weight in May.., Because he’s going to lose that fat by September… camp gets your body into football shape

The season is a massive grind …it takes a toll on your body

Offensive lineman are literally called big uglies for a reason

And he passed the conditioning test

Agree with regard to Spencer Brown.   He's pumped up and has talked about how he has had to get up to eat in the middle of the night to maintain bulk.

Dawkins is just naturally inclined to get overweight.   He's not likely to lose much weight during the season.

Spencer Brown will be 240# or less when he retires.   Dion will probably be heavier than he is now, IMO.    Hopefully his contract year motivation will change that trajectory next offseason but those dudes are not comps on the weight side of things.

There are examples of guys who were in the middle..........big and easily capable of carrying weight..........but decided to be healthier and got smaller and that actually diminished their game.    Ruben Brown did that.    He was a run blocking beast as a 310# rookie.  But then he decided to trim down and got as light as 270# and really lost a lot of his ability as a run blocker.

My friend was an offensive lineman for the Bengals

He played at 310 pounds…

Now retired he walks around at 225 …

It’s like Eric Woods Weight drop

Yeah same with Ruben Brown.   I heard he was around 230# post career.

For the people who just assume that the strength and conditioning people will get the players in the right place so we shouldn't  worry about it.........back in the 90's when the Bills also had a revered training staff they still had crazy instances like Ruben Brown deciding to shed 30# or Eric Moulds deciding to add 10# of unnecessary muscle after his great 1998 season.    Bad personal decisions that caused immediate drops in their productivity.

Ultimately it's up to the players to make smart decisions.

Of course it is

But I would be a lot more mad at Ruben brown dropping 30 pounds… Then Dawkins coming in 15 or 20 pounds overweight

Which can be worked on

Sure he can work on losing weight in camp.    Your take seems to be that working on honing his skills during the offseason is irrelevant.    Is the work of the same value when it's done at 30# over their playing weight?   That goes against everything that is ever said about offseason preparation now.     We don't want Josh Allen to not pick up a football all offseason..........we want him to go out and train with Jordan Palmer so he can make himself better.

I never said honing your skills in the off-season is not important… I’m just of the opinion that a lineman showing up a little overweight… When he always does that… It’s not the biggest issue…

To be fair Dion can gain 10-15

pounds… And still do lineman drills in the off-season

Is it the best look for Dion? no

but it’s not my biggest concern

If Dion suddenly can’t block anymore it will be a problem

Do you think Dawkins is carrying around 10 extra pounds of water?

Listen he’s clearly not in the best shape

He’s clearly got a nice 15 to 25 pounds extra on him… But he seems to do this every off-season

And he always gets into playing shape

The one position I don’t freak out with in May… When they come in overweight… is o line … Let’s see how dawkins looks at the end of training camp

I get that there are still  3 or 4 months before the season starts so things have time to dramatically improve. But OTOH Dawkins’ weight and conditioning have been an issue in the past and it did seem to be an issue last season. This season he looks to be in the worst shape he’s ever been in as Bill. The possible impact of that on Allen’s health and the Bills’ season is a legitimate concern IMO. Again, the season doesn’t start tomorrow, but this bears watching.

Dion Dawkins was more than fine last season … By the end of the season he was really good

They don’t make guys that size that move that quickly

He was really good by the end of the season? I suggest you rewatch the Bengals game…. Yea I know everyone sucked, but Dawkins was particularly awful.

Everybody suck that last game

Week 9 through January Dion playing good football

He always gets better as the season Progresses

I’m not calling him an all pro but he is the best tackle we have by far
