Tip: 20 year-old Nestle's Quik does not dissolve in milk anymore. Had some I bought in 1992 (copyright  date on the container) Took ot from Buffalo to Hartford to California. I was moving again in 2012 and decided to see if it may be good still.  Would not dissolve at all.

I made a quick black bean chili the other day:

 

1/2 diced onion (coulda used onion powder)

1 can black beans

1 can diced tomatoes

1 cup cooked frozen corn

I foolishly threw out a tub of pick de Gallo after skirt steak taco night recently. A few days had passed, but I didn’t know what was to come. When I was eating my plain can of black beans, I was missing my pico! A little sour cream helped, but my next grocery trip will include frozen corn. I should always have that on hand!

You know, I have a bit of sour cream and some salsa, and I didn't even think about a dab of those.  Next time!

I would say throw the flavoring package in the trash and replace with your own stuff.  Healthier and better tasting:

We use Ramen a lot as camping dinners.  Here are two of my favorites:

For non-camping dinners, replace freeze-dried veg with frozen or fresh.  Can omit the fancy-pants pinenuts or replace with other nuts

 

Italian Pesto Noodles Backpacking Dinner            
Per serving of 1/2 packet: 4.5 oz, 630 cal, 19 g protein without veg, 5.2 oz, 700 cal, 20.5 g protein with veg ounces      
Ingredients 1x 2x 6x calories protein g  
1.5 oz || Ramen noodles 1.5 3 9 190 5  
Homemade or commercial Pesto sauce  1 2 6 150 2 Aldi's Priano brand decent
1.0 oz || grated parmesan 1 2 6 110 8  
1 oz || Toasted Pine Nuts 1 2 6 180 4  
Longer trip option: 1 oz Olive oil 1 2 6 120    
Spice mix: 1 T dried basil, 1 T dried parsley, 1 t garlic powder 0.3 0.6 1.8      
Optional addition: 1/2 packet of freeze-dried mixed veg 0.7 1.4   70 1.5  

 

 

Asian Peanut Noodles Backpacking Dinner          
Per serving of 1/2 packet: 3.7 oz, 460 cal, 15 g prot without peas. | 4.8 oz, 570 cal, 21 g prot with peas Ounces per serving

Ramen noodles (1/2 packet per serving) 1.5 3   190 5
Peanut butter  1 2 6 190 7

  Sunday update : Went for a follow up trip to Wegman's Saturday afternoon.  Got a pound of 95 percent ground beef.  15-20 packages total in refrigerator case.  Wanted chicken but only a couple packages of strips for stir fry.  There were a half dozen packages of chuck roast so I bought one.  Bought 1 gallon of milk and the limit was changed to one per sale.  Toilet paper gone.  Sitting at pretty much normal for the moment other than chicken.  We'll see what next Friday brings.

No way, I disagree. I had Kroger-brand dressing last night, turkey flavor. Delicious! Super easy to make.

  Stove Top has been terrible for years.  Nothing like it was when I was in college and wanted something quick many years ago.

We have more food in the house than we’ve had since the boys were in high school. (That’s been a while!)  My routine had been to shop daily for what I was in the mood for. NOW....I try to limit my trips so I load up, but not on stuffing. I like the old way better.

Same with us.  Either my wife or I would go grocery shopping almost every day.  She loves a fresh baguette.  Now she goes once every 7 to 10 days and fills the car.  Plenty of time to cook. We have to be careful not to over eat.
