White House to ask Congress for emergency coronavirus funding

Quote

The White House will soon ask Congress for emergency funds to fight the coronavirus outbreak, after weeks of hesitation by the administration to press for additional funding, said four individuals with knowledge of the pending request.

However, the amount could be significantly lower than some public health officials have argued is necessary — potentially as little as $1 billion, said two individuals, which could be rapidly exhausted by development of potential vaccines, widespread lab tests and numerous other investments.

A White House official told POLITICO that the pending request is still preliminary and the sum could change. A congressional aide said that lawmakers have been told to expect the request in the coming days.

Trump is a fool if he doesn't mobilize the CDC, State HHS, Homeland, State, DOD, etc. to a pandemic footing and pressure the WHO to declare a pandemic.

You don't want the US to be caught flat footed when this virus enters the US from every direction, and you know it's going to come through every port of entry.

The WHO doesn't want to cause a panic but I think the virus did a lot more damage in China than China has let on, and it's just ramping up in new areas of the globe with even less sophisticated health care systems.

i can't vouch for the following but i did happen upon it this morning and followed a few of the links, just putting it out there for consumption purposes. use your own discernment and take from it what you will. the article in question is from June of '17.

The World Bank’s “pandemic bonds” are designed so investors pay in the event of an outbreak

... The pandemic bonds work like this: Investors buy the bonds and receive regular coupons payments in return. If there is an outbreak of disease, the investors don’t get their initial money back. There are two varieties of debt, both scheduled to mature in July 2020. The first bond raised $225 million and features an interest rate of around 7%. Payout on the bond is suspended if there is an outbreak of new influenza viruses or coronaviridae (SARS, MERS). The second, riskier bond raised $95 million at an interest rate of more than 11%. This bond keeps investors’ money if there is an outbreak of Filovirus, Coronavirus, Lassa Fever, Rift Valley Fever, and/or Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever. The World Bank also issued $105 million in swap derivatives that work in a similar way.

These bonds are similar to catastrophe bonds, a $90 billion market used by insurance companies to shift risks of hurricanes, earthquakes, and other natural disasters onto the financial markets. The World Bank’s bond sale was 200% oversubscribed, with investors eager to get their hands on the high-yield returns on offer. The majority of buyers were from Europe and included dedicated catastrophe-bond investors, pension funds, and asset managers. ...

In other words, that racist, evil, incompetent buffoon Trump didn't ask for enough money to sufficiently pay off Democrat donors.

Honestly? There is no containing this, not if it lives as long as advertised on objects, and undetected in people.  You gonna quarantine the world for 24 days? And then an additional 24 days every time someone tests positive?

Maybe this will be the end of biological warfare?

@Buffalo_Gal bio weapons are counter productive if a vaccine is not perfectly ready to protect unintended victims and highly lethal upon intended victins.....the pretense that viruses naturally evolve over the centuries just won't protect the governmentS from voter retaliation... the "conspiracy theory" and idiopathic branding of activists now is so over used since LBJ & BLUE BOOK we will start winning elections despite fake news being the puppets of fascist corporations ruling us now

Iran’s Deputy Health Minister Tests Positive for Coronavirus After Government Tells Citizens Not to Panic.

James Hamblin of The Atlantic wrote this week that “you’re likely to get the coronavirus.” There’s a cheerful way to start your day, eh? Despite repeated assurances from the CDC and media medical experts over the past couple of months that this was probably no big deal, the coronavirus continues to spread. There are lockdowns in place Iran and some spots in Europe, including Italy, so this is no longer a strictly Chinese problem. And we already have some cases here in the United States, though the numbers remain thankfully small.

But what is the President of the United States doing about it, if anything? That the question being posed today at The Hill by Peter Sullivan. Thus far Trump has been trying to keep everyone calm and reassure us that things are under control. But Sullivan reminds us of how critical Trump was of the government’s response to the Ebola outbreak in 2014 and suggests that his attitude may be about to change.

So some additional funding has been requested, though the two parties are fighting over what the right amount should be. The AP quotes one public health policy expert as saying he’s “pleased that for the most part the White House is staying out of it and they’re letting CDC run the show.” But should he be? The CDC is actually the outfit that needs to be handling this but they are also the ones demonstrating a lack of any sense of urgency.

Look, I understand that part of the job of the President is to remain positive and not alarm people needlessly. And thus far Donald Trump has been doing that. But there’s a difference between putting a positive spin on things and simply whistling past the graveyard. The World Health Organization has already expressed “alarm” at the rapid spread of the virus and said that they are on the verge of declaring it a pandemic. If the CDC isn’t already pouring all available efforts and resources into getting a vaccine in production, the President needs to put a boot to somebody’s backside and make sure that they get into gear.

Also, as Karen recently pointed out, it’s possible that we might already have an effective vaccine sitting in a freezer in Texas. Why we don’t have anyone working on human testing for that already is a frustrating mystery. I don’t want the White House to suddenly start setting people’s hair on fire and causing a panic, but the President could definitely be doing more to not simply reassure people, but let them know that he’s on top of this thing and tell us the specific steps being taken.

Thus far we’ve been fairly lucky in North America. And we’re at least reducing the risk with travel bans and quarantine plans. Also, unless the virus undergoes additional changes, there’s a solid chance you won’t die from the virus even if you catch it. But that situation isn’t going to hold forever. Even if the coronavirus isn’t an apocalyptic strain, there will be one coming sooner or later. How we handle this outbreak and what we learn in the process could make the difference between survival and extinction at some point in the future.

NOT A QUESTION OF IF, BUT WHEN:

Americans should prepare for coronavirus crisis in U.S., CDC says..

“It’s not so much a question of if this will happen any more, but rather more a question of exactly when this will happen and how many people in this country will have severe illness.”

Related: Parents should be prepared for tele-schooling.
